  1. Writing is on the wall for our new closer to blow a save the night after our old closer blew one.
  2. I'm okay with it too, but if that had happened that way to Braun, I'd be pretty steamed.
  3. That was pretty close, not nearly as obvious as Bill and Brian would have you believe. He probably should've asked for help.
  4. Me either. I don't understand the stigma of trading to a division rival. Who cares? If we trade him we're pretty much conceding that we're not going anywhere this year anyway, and he's a free agent after this year.
  5. I don't understand how this is going to help him. Axford's problems aren't from pitching in pressure situations.
  6. Nothing we could be surprised about anyway. Melvin hasn't traded a MLB level player when his value was high since Scott Podsednik.
  7. I still don't understand how people think Wolf is tradeable. If Melvin got a call tomorrow saying, "Excuse me Doug, but we're looking to unload one of our soft-tossing lefty starters. He's got an ERA near 6 this season and he'll be 36 next month. He's also owed another $5M this year. What can you offer him for us?" What do you think would be the appropriate way to respond to that?
  8. Is it such a crazy idea to build a team with the intent of getting the best possible players in trades, rather than limiting yourself to a specific position? I hate how this team is run sometimes.
  9. That wouldn't be a bad idea, but here's what I fully expect to happen: Melvin halfheartedly gauges the interest in Greinke for the next two weeks. The offers dwindle as potential teams lose starts from Greinke and land other options like Dempster and Hamels. Melvin stands pat, and tells us about how he thinks we're still in it and so wasn't really interested in losing Greinke.
  10. It has started today just about every day since the Dodgers' series, and yet has still not really started.
  11. We can pull Axford out of the closers role, but frankly, it isn't going to do much good. That's the problem with this bullpen is that the problem is the ENTIRE bullpen. Look around the league and every bullpen, even the 2 that are statistically worse than us, at least have 1 or two guys that they can trust. We have NO one. Parra, Veras, Loe, etc, every one of them is hit and miss, hopefully you get them on a good night. Our most "reliable" reliever is an $8M dollar setup man pitching well over his career ERA who has been harshly criticized for being highly disappointing this year and would be even more if the rest of the pen wasn't making him look great. That's why I have called for Kyles to be fired. One or two guys just "off" this year? Could be a number of reasons. But when the problem is not one or two guys but the entire bullpen, you need to start looking at the coaching. If the problem is not him, they have a pretty big project on their hands, because the pen needs to be almost completely rebuilt next year.
  12. I couldn't disagree with this more. One solid reliever isn't going to fix the pen and make up an 8 game deficit, and trade prices for relievers are severely inflated near the deadline. Let's not compound the problem this year by further depleting an already weak farm system. It's not happening this year. They are just not good enough. I agree. Trading for anyone is not something Melvin should be doing right now. One pen arm isn't gonna fix a thing anyway. No reason to give up prospects. It is what it is at this point. It's something that will need to be addressed more in the offseason. It's gonna take a lot more than one new arm to fix this mess of a pen. Right. It's not even so much the 8 games, but trying to look at this team realistically, and asking, "Is there any realistic chance that this team is all of 8 games better than the Reds, 7 games better than the Pirates, and 4.5 games better than the Cardinals from here on out?" I can't think of any way that I can honestly answer yes to that. There are 673 innings left in the season, so the 35 that we would get out of Balfour isn't going to put a dent into our problems. Also, the A's are a half a game out of a playoff spot, we are 7. So I think they'd probably be a little insulted by the notion that they would be selling in their position with us buying.
  13. I couldn't disagree with this more. One solid reliever isn't going to fix the pen and make up an 8 game deficit, and trade prices for relievers are severely inflated near the deadline. 14. I'm just going to say it -- if the Brewers "stand pat" with the current team, win 75-80 games, and then go ahead and lose Greinke and Marcum to free agency, Doug Melvin should be fired. Won't be, but should be. Marcum probably isn't currently worth the risk of extending the 1 year/$13M qualifying offer, especially if he ends up missing a significant portion of the season, so to lose both of them for two draft picks would be a pretty big failure.
  15. After finally winning a division last year, I find it really depressing that waking up and finding out we traded Zack Greinke is about the most exciting thing that could realistically happen this season.
  16. "Only" 19 walks in 43 innings is almost 4 per 9, which isn't very good. Especially for a 29 year old in AAA. Well, our 29 year old in MLB has 21 walks in 37 innings. Not that I'm disagreeing with the point.
  17. In the big picture, we should probably all be thanking Axford for tonight. There's a very fine line this month between selling/reloading and foolishly "going for it" again and it won't take much convincing for Melvin/Mark A. to unload two of their top 5 prospects for some stopgap SS.
  18. Turnbow lost the ability to throw a strike in early 2008, and by the end of the year he couldn't even get a job in the minors. Inability to throw strikes is not always "fixable". Because every reliever that's incredible for one season and struggles with their control for a while in the next ends up in a cataclysmic self-destructive free-for-all. Hey - 2/2, right? Clearly the logical action to take in this post-game frenzy is to dump him completely, because his career is most definitely over. Because he's Derrick Turnbow. He's not, but I just get a kick out of people acting like the comparables are ridiculous. Both were hard-throwing control-challenged pitchers who came out of nowhere to be dominant closers. Turnbow suddenly lost the ability to throw strikes and was never the same again. Axford has lost the ability to throw strikes. It's no certainly that Axford's career will follow the same path, but to act like their are no comparisons is simply choosing to remain ignorant to it. No one said to dump him completely, but there's a lot more to his troubles than bad luck or bad timing. It's not like he was getting shelled? Hell, he was lucky he only gave up 3, he had two hard outs hit to the warning track. And leadoff walks have just plagued him.
  19. Roenicke: "He's your closer, you always stick with your closer until it's tied or he gives up the lead." You do? Guess I missed that bit of unwritten baseball logic. Augustine: "The good thing is the Brewers have two guys that can close." We don't even have one that can close, Jerry.
  20. On the bright side, the arbitration price tag on Axford has fallen harder than the housing market in 2008.
  21. He is even worse pitching in non-save situations than save situations. Is it going to help anything to flip-flop them? Or are you going to go with Loe/Veras as a setup man instead? Yuck. The entire bullpen is a complete joke. I would fire Stan Kyles yesterday just as a statement that this is completely unacceptable. The bullpen alone is the reason that we are not contending this year. The lineup, defense, and rotation (other than Wolf), have all been fine.
  22. Turnbow lost the ability to throw a strike in early 2008, and by the end of the year he couldn't even get a job in the minors. Inability to throw strikes is not always "fixable".
  23. Axford has 6 blown saves at mid-season and a 5.35 ERA this year. Let's not act like he has been a sneeze or a billionth of a second away from still being an elite closer this year.
  24. So just wondering at what point the Turnbow/Axford comparisons are no longer all that ridiculous?
