  1. I think it would take something like Rivas +McClendon + Heckathorn.
  2. Rivas seems awfully cheap even for a rental. A back end of the rotation guy with only a decent shot of ever making it as an MLB starter.
  3. "We've talked about that, and I think the game is going to kind of dictate that," Roenicke said. "Because if Kameron is needed in the eighth inning, I don't think necessarily we just want to say, 'Hey, we're not going to pitch him in the eighth; we're going to wait until the ninth.' "So I think the game will decide what's going to happen there." Hallelujah! We're making progress.
  4. I just don't think there's a match anymore. Our best position prospects project as reserves. Why would they want that? We're not trading Gamel, who is pretty much penciled in as our 1B next year. We could give them our best 4 pitching prospects, which would be Peralta, Thornburg, Rivas, and Scarpetta, and I'm still not sure that's enough. And it would be pretty dumb to do for a rental. I want to see us get a SS too, but as mentioned, I think we're going to have to focus on the Hardy's of the world (which is getting more and more expensive the longer we wait).
  5. I understand we can't win every game, but there is literally no one on our bench that we can send in in a late game situation in a 1 run game with a chance to tie it up. So it's upsetting to me that DM and RR are satisfied with guys like Counsell, Kotsay and Nieves when Kottaras and Gamel are both available and Branyan was available. I don't expect us to win every game but I expect us to improve in ways that we can.
  6. I can't get over the fact that Nieves is still here. It would be one thing if we had absolutely no one who could replace him, but that's obviously not the case. I don't know what it is, but it almost feels like there's some sort of sports politics involved here. The disparity between Kottaras and Nieves is pretty big to keep ignoring like this.
  7. JJ with another HR tonight. Go get him before he starts to become too pricey. Please. We have a wonderful, possibly championship caliber team, but if we have a big hole in the boat, this is it. Fill it. Betancourt is what he is, he's not going to go improve on you.
  8. I don't really understand why Melvin has to swallow pride to bring JJ back. At the time, we had a starting SS of our present and future. Right now, we don't. Just the way things turned out. Either way, Melvin should not be letting pride get in the way of improving the team. Look at how big the Nyjer Morgan trade has been for us, and we gave up virtually nothing. How much better do we feel about having Morgan in there every day against RHP than we would if it was Gomez every single day? There are ways to improve this team without giving up the farm, and I hope Melvin doesn't overlook any of them.
  9. Kottaras continues to mash. Hit 2 HR's last night and now sits at .321 with a .930 OPS. He's only 28, so he looks to be hitting his prime. We did see at the beginning of the season that his fielding has improved, as well. If only we had a completely worthless backup catcher that could be easily sent packing to make room for George.
  10. The only problems I have with this are -- - Nieves is not a "very good" defensive backup. He is average at best defensively and absolutely atrocious offensively. If he really were very good defensively, enough to make up for his terrible offense, I could see the argument being made to keep him, but right now there's absolutely no good reason that Kottaras isn't up. His role is limited, I agree, but the fact that he starts for our major league team is too big of a role IMO. - I don't see Counsell being a role player on 2 WS teams making much of a difference. I'd agree though that it's nice to have someone there who can give you a good eye at the plate and play all over the infield. I don't think he's got much left in the tank, but he can still be useful to us this season.
  11. Since Weeks and Morgan are pretty much entrenched in the lineup against RHP at #1 and #2, wouldn't it make sense to flip-flop them? Whether a guy is batting #1 or #2 really isn't going to make much difference, except Weeks is a big power threat and Morgan is not, so it seems to me that flipping them would be a good way to pick up some extra runs over the course of the season.
  12. Agreed. STOP sitting Hart!! He's an everyday, all-star caliber starter, not a platoon role player, which would be overstating Kotsay's role. Using these ancient sample sizes of 20-30 AB's from when Hart was a rookie and Kotsay and Vasquez were actually good, to determine who starts today, is just insane.
  13. Every day I keep checking and seeing if we've dumped Nieves yet for Kottaras, and somehow it still hasn't happened. I have no idea what we are waiting for. Nieves to get better? What does Nieves have on Melvin and Roenicke? It's like last year with Suppan. We knew damn well that Soup had nothing and wasn't going to last the season, but for whatever reason, we insisted on dragging it out all the to the summer before making an inevitable move.
  14. I emailed Tom H at JSOnline about this. Surprisingly he got back to me in about 5 minutes, but said he wouldn't look for it to happen due in great part to Hardy's recent injury history.
  15. Ironically we're pretty well set in the outfield now after it looked like CF might be a train wreck coming into this year.
  16. He would only cost us about $3M the rest of the season. I'm sure Mark A could swing it. Hardy has a .776 OPS this season...if he could just give us around his career OPS of . 747, while playing the same standard of defense he has played his entire career, that's a pretty big upgrade over Betancourt. Let's face it, we're not going to be going out and trading for an ace this year, a new closer, or a big bat. Pretty much what we got is what we're counting on. So if we're going to make any sort of move to improve our team before the deadline, this is one that is affordable, doesn't commit us long-term, is a fairly substantial upgrade at our weakest position, and therefore could reasonably be expected to have an impact without costing us the rest of our farm. It just makes a ton of sense to me.
  17. I'd say the cupboards are pretty bare. Our top positional prospects project as 4th outfielders and utility infielders. That's bare. The pitching situation is a little better, but still nothing eye-popping as far as quality goes. It can be turned around, but it won't happen overnight. We have a couple first round picks in a deep draft, so that will help. Needs to start with a good draft today. No more Eric Arnett mistakes.
  18. I concur. I question whether most people here even like watching baseball. Everyone is always so ticked off. All you need is a bullhorn and a "THE END IS NEAR" sign. Isn't it supposed to be fun? Some people are more emotional about the game and that's okay. C'mon, we haven't played well on the road this year and we blew a 5 run lead on the road. I think there's probably a lot more Brewer fans than just on this board ticked off about that.
  19. Because he has to save him for the hypothetical lead that we have later on in hypothetical extra innings that usually ends up never even coming.
  20. RR sends in a cold reliever and he drills the hitter on the first pitch. You're such a genius, Ronny.
  21. Great work, Kotsay. What ever would we do without the grittiness of you, Wil Nieves, and Craig Counsell?
  22. Every time a sharp grounder is hit in the direction of 1st base, in that half second, I always automatically assume that the ball is going to end up in right field.
  23. I've gone from really really being concerned about our CF problem coming into this year to really loving the Morgan/Gomez platoon, which seems to be starting to become a strict platoon (as it should be).
