  1. Watching this team is seriously like watching the first part of "Major League".
  2. I'm not even really mad about it now. I think the worst thing that could happen to this team right now is a 4 game winning streak heading into the AS break. The best thing that could happen today is Parra loses a 1-0 pitchers duel and Hart gets on base every AB.
  3. Watching us strand bases loaded with nobody out used to frustrate me. Now, it just reinforces to me what the real state of this team is.
  4. That 3rd ball to Inglett was a foot outside and in the dirt. Yes, it did miss by much, Rock.
  5. Melvin, Ash, and Macha had a meeting and Macha came out of it refreshed. Sounds like it was a totally non-productive one to me.
  6. I'll take anything from Hart right now that continues to add to or maintain his trade value.
  7. The Pittsburgh Pirates would probably contend for the division if all their players performed near their at-best projections. You could probably say that about the majority of MLB teams -- the problem is that you're not going to get your entire 25 man roster to perform to their best possible scenario, it's just not realistic.
  8. Melvin and Attanasio's noses are going to get huge from looking into cameras every day and proclaiming, "We think we can turn this around and get back in it!"
  9. I didn't realize anyone was advocating for anything that drastic. But clearly, we have a lot of improving to do. We're 9 under right now and we've got Prince, we've got Hart, but we're still not close to being a contender. I don't know why it's farfetched to believe that we could actually trade Fielder and improve, and not have to wait until 2014 to do so. You get a near-MLB ready high upside starter for Fielder, you get him into your rotation, you go out and get a 1st basemen like Adam Dunn to take over for Prince in free agency, and suddenly, you've got new names but better results. You've lost little to no offensive production, and you've added a high upside starting pitcher that your team so desperately needs. I think I'd rather do something like that then just throw whatever money we have at the second-level FA pitchers on the market again next year, then wait for the bottom to fall out after 2011 when we didn't get anything for Prince OR Hart.
  10. What FA 1/2 pitcher are you suggesting we go after? I think we can all pretty much agree that Cliff Lee isn't coming here as a FA. So what else is out there? Lilly? A 35 year old soft-tossing lefty coming off 2 career years. No thanks, seems right on par with our other bad FA pitching signings the last 5 years. Harang? Nope, not unless we can sign the 2005-2007 version of him. The only other guys out there with any possible #1/#2 upside are a handful of high risk/high reward guys, most of which were available last year....Sheets, Bedard, Harden, Webb. Most experts would say that Wolf was either the 2nd or 3rd best pitcher on the FA market last offseason, the best signable one for us, and he's a #3, not a #1/#2. Just because we have the money and need for a #1/#2 pitcher doesn't mean, A) That such a pitcher is even available on the FA market, and B) That they won't sign somewhere else.
  11. If Melvin traded Fielder, Hart, and Gamel for a Cliff Lee rental, I think that would probably officially begin my 5 year boycott of Brewer baseball.
  12. I really, really hope Mark A. is just bluffing to put us in the best possible position should a deal be made. There's a number of problems with Mark's argument, otherwise. First of all, Hart is probably one of the more overachieving players in baseball right now. Yeah, maybe he just figured it out at 28. Or maybe he's a player who is really much closer to his career OPS of .812 than this year's OPS of .923. Is that really a chance we are willing to take for the sake of ONE season? Sure, we could contend next year if Parra breaks out, if we get a #2 pitcher, if someone steps up and shores up the bullpen, point is, there a lot of IF's -- and you could say that about a number of MLB teams, including us 3 months ago. I don't see any wisdom in passing up the long-term benefits of getting a good return for Prince and Hart just to have them in the lineup next year. I love this organization, but I think Attanasio and Melvin tend to listen to their heart a lot more than their head. Sometimes I feel like they are a lot more like casual fans who want to see their team win now, than businessmen who look at the big picture.
  13. If Carlos Gomez is Melvin's poster boy for this statement, I hope he's learned it doesn't always work that way.
  14. We can't be afraid to take a chance on guys like Bumgarner just because Homer Bailey and others haven't panned out. If we're not going to take some chances with young pitching prospects, we may as well continue to overpay for aging FA starters. Cain is a FA at the same time Prince and Hart are FA's. Unless we had some sort of extension with him hammered out already, trading for a guy like Cain, to me, is just plugging one hole and creating another.
  15. How do you know this? I severely doubt the DM didn't even listen to offers for anyone on the roster.Well, he came out himself and said that they would not be listening to any offers for Fielder in the offseason. Now, if you want to speculate that he was lying, that's fine, but I don't think it would have been a very wise PR move on Melvin's part to announce to his entire fanbase and season ticket holders that he was not going to listen to trade offers for their most popular player, then PROVE he's lying by doing so anyway.
  16. I doubt that both Fielder and Hart will be gone by the AS break, but I'll be pretty disappointed if at least one of them isn't. I think there's a little better market for Hart right now than Fielder and I think that has a more realistic chance of happening. Lower price tag, and a little bit higher demand for outfielders right now, whereas the 1B market is a little more saturated. I said before the season that Melvin should have traded Prince last offseason and I still strongly maintain that. I think he missed the boat entirely now and believe it's going to result in Melvin and a potential trading partner being way too far apart for a deal to get done and eventually result in us losing him for picks. Melvin is going to have to either do that, or take a disappointing return for Fielder now. Failing to even test the market on Fielder this last offseason really eroded all remaining confidence that I had in Melvin.
  17. To put things in perspective for the Brewers, the current wild card leader in the NL is on pace for 90 wins exactly. Assuming that pace holds up, which is about right, the Brewers would need to go 26 games over .500 the rest of the season to even tie for the wild card, an overall record of 53-27 the rest of the way, which is a .662 winning percentage. The Yankees, who own the best record in baseball, have a .617 winning percentage. Mark and Doug need to stay away from the fantasy that this team is capable of a 2nd half run better than any team in baseball has performed so far. It's not realistic and it's detrimental to the future of this team. I know it's never fun to call any season lost but they need to look at a bigger picture than just the rest of attendance for 2010.
  18. Sooner or later, this team needs to accept that they are sellers, not buyers. The rotation improving has been nice, and the bats have been fairly consistent, but it's time to just concede that this team just is not good enough to make a legitimate run. They're 8 under .500 where they've been hanging out for a long time now. They've got 2 teams in the division that are just head and shoulders better. And now with Gallardo's status uncertain, I have to think that's the final nail in the coffin for trying to make a run in 2010. They didn't help themselves gain ground when Houston and Seattle were in town, and they didn't do enough in St. Louis other than just continuing to try to tread water. The pitching is still poor, and the defense is very poor. There's not a ton of help on the way -- guys like Doug Davis, LaTroy Hawkins, and Jody Gerut coming off the DL are not going to make an ounce of difference to turning things around. However, there are a couple valuable trading pieces that could really help us reload and set us up for success. Hart and Prince are the most obvious by far, but it would be nice to add in Bush or better yet, Wolf, to one of them. McGehee, even Axford, or Loe, have to all be considered candidates. Does Inglett have any value? I won't propose any specifics here which would probably belong in the trade proposals thread, but just pointing out that we could get ourselves some significant help for the farm system with a few good moves, and be able to set ourselves up for success in the future.
  19. I hope they are reasonable enough to accept the fact that a team 11 games under .500 is probably not in a position to "go for it." I know Mark wants to win every year and I understand the need and desire to keep attendance at a healthy number, but if they continue to try to go year to year with this team and hope that they managed to plug enough holes to make a run, they're never going to be able to get over the hump.
  20. No one is doing anything more than speculating. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not really a Melvin fan at all anymore and am certainly not looking for an "out" to defend him. I used to think he was a great GM years ago, but a number of poor moves (and a number of times when he didn't make a move when he should have), and a large amount of dead money on this team has me re-thinking that position. This quote from the MJS today from Mark A: " It was always Doug's call as to what we do with players on the roster. " does seem to indicate Melvin's responsibility.
  21. We should never bunt/sacrifice, anything. I'm sure it's the right call, but not for us. If you suck at smallball as bad as we do, just forget about it.
  22. Ahh it's nice watching Albert ground into a double play to end the 10th. I'm not a Macha fan, but he earned some points with me by using his closer there in the 10th. Yost would have probably blown the game in the 10th with Suppan, thrown up his hands in dismay and asked, "Who would I have had close the game if I had used Axford??!" Course, Axford isn't exactly his permanent closer, I'm not sure if he would have done the same with Trevor Hoffman mid-season last year.
  23. Amen to that. Sell, sell, sell! Everything must go! (unless named: Braun, Gomez, Weeks, Escobar, McGehee, Lucroy, Gallardo, Axford and Braddock)Really I'm probably okay with selling Weeks and McGehee for the right offer. I'm on the fence with those two.
  24. Mark and Doug, please sell. Please don't live in a fantasy world that this team is somehow a contender.
