  1. The rotation has been great. The defense has been terrible, which makes the rotation look middle of the road.Agreed. Just look at the FIP and xFIP of our starting rotation: FIP/xFIP Greinke - 3.03, 2.17 Marcum - 3.66, 3.56 Gallardo - 3.74, 3.49 Wolf - 4.34, 4.30 Narveson - 3.42, 3.56 Not that these stats are the end-all, but our starting pitching independent of our fielding would put us near the top of the league.
  2. Hart is posting an .814 OPS which is well in line with his career norms. I don't think he has the greatest work ethic on the team, but I don't think by any means he quit or has been bad. Actually he's been about a league average defender in RF again this year as well. I'm not the biggest fan of Corey Hart but I would ask anyone who is disappointed with him this year exactly what they expect out of him.
  3. To sum it up, IMO, we need to upgrade both of the black holes that we have in the IF. If we decide to just let it ride and just miss out on the playoffs, it's going to be something we all regret for a long time, and it will almost surely be the last call for Doug.
  4. I think it has to be GM speak. I hope. If he doesn't think that there are many upgrades available to two infielders that are both worse than your average AAA replacement player, then I'm not sure that Melvin has a full grasp on just how bad Betancourt and McGehee are.
  5. http://espn.go.com/blog/SweetSpot/post/_/id/14144/deadline-drama-reviewing-2008-10 Who gives the most AB's to the worst players? It's us. And it isn't even close:
  6. I would never root for McGehee to get hurt, but it's disappointing that that is what it would take for us to get better at 3rd.
  7. Carroll is pretty much average defensively. He's not going to give you the D of Barmes or Alexei Ramirez. He is however a defensive upgrade over Betancourt as you mentioned. But most people with a pulse are a defensive upgrade over Betancourt.
  8. I'd love to land him, don't know what it would take to get him but I'm guessing awfully pricey.
  9. Again...as we are learning with Greinke, we can't just bring these guys over, put them out there in front of a bad defense, and expect their ERA's to just carry over to us. Narveson = 3.41 FIP, 3.65 xFIP Kuroda = 3.73 FIP, 3.63xFIP Narveson strikes out about a batter more per 9, too, so if anything we'd see slightly more balls in play over the rest of the season. How does this swap us better at all, much less making us better enough over 10 starts to make it worth it? And Kuroda already has interest from plenty of teams who actually need a starter. So I don't see us being nearly competitive enough in any bidding war for him to even be in the discussion, and if we did I think it would involve us giving up a lot more than we should.
  10. I don't understand why we're talking about improving a position of strength. Narveson has done nothing to earn a demotion and with the glaring holes that we have on the left side of the infield, I wouldn't spend all we have left in part to bump Narveson from the rotation. Narveson has a 3.41 FIP and 3.56 xFIP this year (better peripherals than Kuroda). Narveson is not a good fit as a LOOGY, and like the FIP and xFIP show, I'm not sure Kuroda even ends up being an upgrade for those 10 games he ends up pitching. He will suffer from the lack of defense just like every other pitcher we have. I'd much rather focus on improving the defense, specifically the left side of the infield, and thus improve every pitcher on the team, rather than looking to replace one of the best #5 starters in baseball.
  11. I've asked the same thing and been told that they are skeptical of Green. What bothers me about this move (or lack thereof) is that they don't have to "give up" on McGehee. Just send him down to Nashville, as mentioned, and let him work on things there and see what Green has got. If you give Green 3 weeks or so and he's not producing, and McGehee is swinging a hot bat in Nashville, fine, switch them back. But what does it honestly hurt to try? Seems like they're just being stubborn at this point. I get the impression (and this is nothing but speculation on my part), that Roenicke has been pleading on McGehee's behalf like I think he was with Nieves for quite some time. I get the feeling that he tries to be a lot more hands on when it comes to personnel moves, whereas Macha just more worked with whoever he was given.
  12. I just don't understand how McGehee is getting the star treatment. Basically, the leash he's getting is so long, you'd automatically think that he was either a top, top prospect for the future who was having some big 3rd year struggles after exploding his first two seasons, or, a 10 year proven veteran with multiple all-star game appearances. McGehee is neither. Better players and prospect than him (Weeks, Hardy), had to take their lumps in Nashville when things just weren't going right in Milwaukee, and it's puzzling to me that McGehee is an exception, especially with a potential replacement OPS'ing .942 in AAA. To put it another way, Hardy wasn't nearly as bad as McGehee, and Escobar not doing nearly as well as Green, when they made the move in 2009. Hardy had a better OPS when he went down, and even when he was bad, he was never a defensive liability like McGehee is.
  13. Ah, I just love the manager mentality of "saving" your closer on the road for extras for a lead that never ends up coming.
  14. Most JSOnline readers were baffled that we didn't just trade Jeff Suppan when he was so bad.
  15. Yeah, Green still being down in AAA is looking odder and odder every day. I almost think it's to the point that Doug is afraid to do it because he's afraid of how he'll look for not doing it sooner if Green succeeds.
  16. It always makes me laugh a little bit when GM's and organizations freak out about bringing up a guy because he's inexperienced at the MLB level. Like the rookie inexperience is somehow going to magically add numbers in the loss column. Lucroy was better defensively last year as a rookie than he is this year.Personally, does anything other than production really matter at this point? Is Green going to look like a rookie at times? Of course. The bottom line is - can he OPS better than .587 and give us better defense than McGehee? I'm not saying he's going to OPS .935 like he is in AAA, but does anyone really think the answer to that is no?
  17. Melvin is making a huge mistake if he doesn't offer arby. Extra high picks are huge for a rebuilding farm system. Rodriguez is very unlikely to accept. Think about it. Yes, he can get a sweet 1 year deal here. He also won't be guaranteed to close and will pass on the security of a longer term deal. Why would he take that when some other team will give him a multi-year deal and make his the closer which makes him a lot more valuable? And frankly, its not a huge disaster if he accepts. You bite the bullet and pay him about 5 mil more than you otherwise would anyway for one year, like we did with Gagne a few years ago, you're set in the bullpen next year, and you move on after 2012. Not a huge price to pay or anything with long-term consequences. Worth the risk.
  18. Ha...my bad...to 1st. He hasn't gone THAT far off the deep end.
  19. It was a sad sight watching McGehee frantically try to race down to 3rd on a great 3-2 pitch from Jimenez that had plenty of the plate. Either he has lost all awareness of the strikezone, or he's just getting really desperate.
  20. The MLBPA is going too far if they're going to start dictating managerial decisions. Then again, in the case of our manager, maybe we could use their help.
  21. Umm. That's like saying it wasn't Doug Melvin's fault that the Brewers had Jeff Suppan. I have given Doug plenty of Kudos for the big acquisitions that he pulled off, but he's the one who hasn't done anything to replace McGehee and acquired Betancourt as his primary SS without any sort of fallback plan. I would say it most definitely is his fault that the infield defense is horrible, maybe above anybody else.
  22. No surprise that Augie gets asked about Yo's struggles tonight and he starts talking about the altitude. I don't think the altitude caused any pitches to go right over the heart of the plate.
  23. Our leadoff doubles are as harmless as a Golden retriever wearing a muzzle.
  24. Not to defend yuni, but by him staying in the rundown til kotsay gets to second, the play is basically a wash.
  25. I almost feel like Betancourts hits in these garbage games do more harm than good. Anything that doesn't matter in a game that gets Doug even possibly thinking "well, maybe Yuni is good enough," is not a positive.
