  1. I have a really hard time rooting for Kotsay because doing so is rooting for his continued existence on the 25 man roster. But I still do it. Counsell, Wilson, Kotsay, etc. is just really an awful, awful bench, has to be one of the worst in baseball. That would be more tolerable if 2 of our starters weren't on the same level. It just makes me mad because they have better players in AAA but they're going with the vets for whatever reason even when they're worse. Just really makes me mad.
  2. Remember a month or two ago when Roenicke was talking about how he was looking over our roster and thought to himself, "You know, this is a really nice bench." That has to be the quote of the year.
  3. Seeing as Green isn't on the 40-man roster, and wasn't in major league camp much, it's not surprising to me. Green is definitely looking good in AAA, but that won't necessarily translate to major league success. Maybe they just don't want to throw him right in the fire so to speak. Gamel has been here before, and they know he's capable of hitting major league pitching. I think we've got 36 guys on the 40 man roster, so getting him on the 40 man would be nothing more than a formality. And that's what we're saying about Green, the guy he would be replacing is horrible defensively and is OPS'ing .579. Green doesn't have to have his .905 translate to immediate major league success to be a respectable upgrade from what we currently have. I understand the idea not to "throw him into the fire", but this is a "go for it" year, so I think if there's any year to take some chances, this is it. Rookies don't automatically struggle when thrown into the fire, some of them have some very good immediate success. That doesn't mean he will, but we certainly lose nothing right now by trying. By the way, I'm not opposed to them sending down Casey and trying Gamel at 3rd, anything to upgrade at 3rd at this point. I'm just very surprised that they would again detour the path of Prince's 1B replacement by putting him back on 3rd when we already have a young 3rd baseman in AAA with plenty of experience in the minors who is having a very fine year.
  4. Yeah, Kotsay's "ability" to play CF really means nothing to us anyway. We've got one elite CF'er in Gomez and one very good CF'er in Morgan. In the unlikely event that both of them would somehow be unavailable to play CF at the same time, Hart can play CF in a pinch.
  5. Yeah, I am absolutely flabbergasted by the lack of attention to Green. I am curious as to whether Roenicke is even aware of his existence. He is OPS'ing .905 in Nashville. He's a lefty, he hits for pop, and he's got decent plate discipline. I am in the dark as to his defensive abilities, but they can't be worse than McGehee. What's not to like? It's not like we need him to carry his .905 OPS from Nashville to Milwaukee to be a big upgrade from McGehee. .700 would be a comfortable upgrade. I don't know if they know something about Green that we don't that is preventing his callup. I can't imagine what it would be.
  6. I'm sure he is a very nice guy and all, so I am surely not saying anything bad here about Mark Kotsay the human being. However, Mark Kotsay the baseball player.... .582 OPS No defensive value 35 years old 144 PA's What am I missing? Boggs, Katin, and Gindl are all better options for a 5th outfielder, and they all actually have upside. Is his clubhouse presence that crucial to the fabric of this team? I seem to highly underestimate the value of a team having an aging player in his mid to late 30's there for leadership purposes, regardless of how good they are at baseball.
  7. I'd just option McGehee to AAA and promote Green. See what Green has and let McGehee try to work it out down in Nashville. You have absolutely nothing to lose at this point.
  8. Yeah, McGehee has to want to kill his agent right now. Even if he was lowballed to say a 4 year, $12M dollar deal, I bet he'd love to have that offer back considering he's never made more than 400-500K in a season and will be lucky to get a major league contract offer next year, much less an arbitration tender.
  9. I don't understand this....are we suggesting that Kotsay playing less, McGehee not batting #5 for half the season, and Loe being used in more of a ROOGY role rather than a setup man are going to have a large negative effect on the clubhouse? That's an awfully tough sell for me. I'd be happy to hear of just one legitimate questionable decision that RR made this year that would have had too large of a clubhouse impact to justify making the decision.
  10. Strictly on baseball, game-related decisions, I would honestly say he's one of, if not the worst in baseball. He makes absolutely puzzling lineup decisions. When another team would have DFA'ed the player by now or at least sent him to the minors, he had yet to even remove him from the 5-hole until halfway through the season. He is convinced that players with negative WAR make up a solid bench and give him DH coverage from within. He overworks his worst relievers and underworks his best ones. He argues that a good hitting #8 hitter is too valuable in the #8 hole to move anywhere else. He gives up more outs on the basepaths than almost any team in baseball with his reckless style. He relentlessly gives up outs in front of Braun and Fielder in an effort to move a runner up a base. If a squeeze works once, he continues to use it in every possible situation until it screws him over. He puts on some good, acceptable shifts, then negates them with nonsensial shifts. He took till mid-June to cut ties with by far the worst backup catcher in baseball. He doesn't understand a ROOGY and treats all lefties like they are a LOOGY. He actually dabbled with the idea of Kotsay platooning in the outfield. I don't need to go on, do I? These are all things that our Brewers manager has actually done this year. All right, vent over.
  11. If only we had a .900+ OPS 3rd baseman prospect down in AAA that could replace him.
  12. I am really tired of trying to defend Greinke's performances to my girlfriend every time she mentions that it sure doesn't seem like he has been nearly as good as we had hoped.
  13. McGehee is nothing more than Bill Hall, a guy who outperformed his potential for 2 years before coming crashing back down to earth. 300+ plate appearances into the season, Roenicke has not figured this out and continues to trot him out there every day in the #5 hole expecting him to magically turn back into Casey McGehee '09-'10. Just be glad that the pre-season long-term contract talks fell apart.
  14. 100% Roenicke's fault that Casey McGehee was the guy up there with 2 in RISP.
  15. It can't be much more with Taylor Green playing like he has. McGehee still being in the 5-hole is mind-boggling to me. Worst OPS on the team. It's 1/2 way through the season. You'd think he was a perennial all-star with how much leash he's getting.
  16. Maybe, but who leads off against lefties? Gomez? I think not.Hart would probably be my top choice, (I'd bat him #2 against RHP with Morgan in lineup, #1 against LHP without Morgan in lineup), but there really aren't any good options. I hope that Roenicke doesn't just stick with Weeks as every day leadoff man because it's been done that way for years. You take a guy like Prince out of the lineup and you've got some run production to make up for. I think at that point you've got to step back and realize that arguably your best power threat could be better utilized.
  17. Does anyone else feel like this is definitely Weeks' last year leading off? You've got Prince almost definitely leaving next year. Easy internal way to make up for those lost RBI's, give Weeks more RBI chances. I'd bat him #3 or #4 next year. Leadoff Morgan, then you've got Braun #3/#4 with Weeks, and Gamel and Hart #2/#5 in some order, and you've still got a very nice lineup even without Prince.
  18. I think seeing that out of Weeks is the most rewarding. All of our faith has been rewarded. I'm loving that extension even more right now. I could nitpick a bit and request he get that BB rate back up to 11-12 pct, and his OBP up to about .385, but I'll "settle" for his .860 OPS and solid D.Yep, so we got 2 of the big 3 signed long term. (Weeks isn't often mentioned in the same breath as Braun and Fielder as far as elite players, but he should be, IMO, he is just as valuable). Plus Hart who is a next-tier guy. Now use Prince's money to sign Greinke and Marcum if you can. Pull that off and you've kept your trio of aces in the rotation long-term as well as kept the lineup looking very solid.
  19. The studs: Prince 3.9, Braun 3.5, Weeks 3.4 Pitching staff: Marcum 1.9, Greinke 1.9, Narveson 1.7, Gallardo 1.4, Wolf 0.8 --- Axford 1.1, Loe 0.1 Nyjer Morgan and Carlos Gomez have a combined 2.7 WAR so far. So what was originally thought to be a major deficiency in CF this year, has actually been more than servicable, if not a position of strength. Unfortunately, where one deficiency disappeared, another popped up at 3B. Negative contributions award: Betancourt -0.1, Nieves -0.4, McGehee -0.5, Kotsay -0.5
  20. We would have to offer Betancourt arbitration (which would be insane of us), and Betancourt would have to decline (equally insane of him), in order to get a pick. Hopefully a top 15 team signs Prince so we get a 1st rounder for him, and we will also get a sandwich pick. If we're really lucky, we could get a sandwich pick for Loe.
  21. If our #5 starter is underperforming with his 5-5, 4.42 ERA in 92 innings line, we are in awfully good shape.
  22. I still don't see how it would do anything but help to swap Morgan and Weeks. Weeks is on pace for 30 HR's, he could benefit from some more RBI chances as could the team. Morgan has plenty of experience in the leadoff spot. Its a very minor change, I don't see how Rickie is suddenly going to become just lost from going from #1 to #2.
  23. Well, that depends if we're really "going for it" or not. We have a major deficiency at SS and Hardy would be a huge upgrade at this point. Also, what people tend to forget is that when you trade for a rental, you're not just trading for the straight up value of having them for a few months, you're also going to have to pay for the valuie of the draft pick compensation that the trading team is going to lose when they trade him. In the case of a Type A, they're going to get an extra 1st/2nd plus a sandwich pick if they just keep him, so why would they make any kind of a deal that didn't go well above and beyond that value. So right now, I'm almost hoping Hardy falters some, because right now, he's probably priced himself out of our range. But this will end up probably being a moot point if Baltimore extends him.
  24. I always felt for the most part that managers didn't have much of an overall affect, and so far I think his management decisions probably have us 2-3 games behind where we would be with an "average" manager. So needless to say, I think he might be the worst manager in baseball.
  25. I'd give him a D. To me he seems to not know his team and that's a big one against him to me. Example, treating Loe as a setup man, treating Braddock like a LOOGY. Not knowing the difference between "veteran leader" and "washed up has-been" with his treatment of Kotsay and persistence with Nieves. The bench is another great example. Roenicke did not want Gamel brought up for interleague DH help because he said he felt he had "coverage from within." . That's a laughable statement. If you're saying you have coverage from within, you're basically saying you have a great bench. Which any nonbiased observer will clearly note that we do not have.
