  1. Where did that first pitch from Riske miss?
  2. Weeks took out Soto earlier this year on a great play at the plate. That was fun to watch. Pie went down like a nancy when getting tagged by Weeks. It didn't even look like a bad collision. Theriot walked off gimpy on a hard slide by Braun. The Cubs may be a lot of things, but tough sure doesn't appear to be one of them.
  3. Okay Prince, 4 outs on your last 2 AB's, not so good.
  4. 7 freaking walks. In all fairness, he got squeezed on that last AB. Marquis has been getting that outside corner all game, but Sheets couldn't get any close call there.
  5. Exactly. Like with the Capuano situation last year in Detroit. Everything was fine, he was scheduled to pitch and then warming up right before the game he pulls something in his leg and can't pitch that day. Who are we going with to start the game? McClung again? Two innings for Riske, Torres and Mota and then mix in an inning for Turnbow and McClung? We'd pretty much have to have a bullpen sacrifice day where everyone in the pen gets to burn out their arm. I don't really get the logic. We've always had a long guy who can give long innings (Villanueva...Helling....Burba...etc.). Can McClung go 5-6 if need be? Or is his ceiling pretty much 3?
  6. Is this ump lost in the clouds? Since when is a pitch that crosses at the thighs low?
  7. Sheets should still be able to go 5, provided the next inning isn't particularly rocky for him.
  8. Yeah, I like having a guy in the bullpen who can give starter innings like we had with Villanueva last year. I'm not real comfortable with McClung being the only long option. I really wish we would get over our fascination with this guy.
  9. Great, Ben, just great. Not that he's been helped this inning.
  10. Great, and Prince's error costs us.
  11. I really hope this is the day we look back on and say, "Remember when the season started and we couldn't hit anybody, until that game at Wrigley near the end of April when it all turned around?"
  12. I wonder what would happen if another umpire went down and they had to go with 2? I think that'd be fun to watch.
  13. I am just worried that we're going to fall behind too far too fast. Yes, we're only 2 games out of first, and yes, we do have some reason to be optimistic since our record is better than our performances have been. But considering we couldn't hold a 8.5 game division lead last year, I'm not overly optimistic that we can come from behind if we start falling behind in the division.
  14. What about this? 1: Weeks 2: Hart 3: Braun 4: Prince 5: Hall 6: Hardy 7: Cameron 8: Pitcher 9: Kendall You've got Hart in the 2 hole who will generally put the ball in play and will be a very tough guy to double up. Hall is a great spot in the lineup for a power hitter and can maximize his RBI opportunities. Cameron's plate patience is put to good use batting in front of the pitcher, who can always bunt Cameron over for Kendall anytime Cameron gets on. So, tell me where my thinking is flawed.
  15. If the #2 hitters job is to drive in runners, why on earth do we have Gwynn batting #2 whenever he is in the lineup?
  16. I would think K's are the most harmful in the 2-hole just because one of the main jobs of the 2-hitter is to advance the leadoff man. Especially with Kendall batting 9th, Cameron is going to come up with runners on base a lot. "Productive outs" are pretty overrated, but he's not going to be very productive advancing any runners if he's striking out 160 times. I agree that strikeout numbers are next to irrelevant for a leadoff man, but I think they mean a little more for a #2 hitter.
  17. We're going to be crying in October when the 3-4 games that we've frittered away this month when we couldn't do anything offensively come back to bite us. Pitching performances wasted in the last week alone that resulted in a loss: Gallardo 7.0 IP 1 ER (1.29 ERA) Villlanueva 7.0 IP 2 ER (2.57 ERA) Suppan 7.0 IP 1 ER (1.29 ERA) Gallardo 7.0 IP 0 ER (0.00 ERA) Parra 5.1 IP 2 ER (3.38 ERA) Four brilliant performances and one good performance that all resulted in losses, 4 by our young pitchers. That's 2004 Sheets'esque. And every one of these 5 counts the same as the last 5 games of the regular season.
  18. Fire Skaalen. Yes, I know it's jumping the gun and it's not going to happen. But the guy doesn't appear to have a clue. The entire offense continues to struggle, and all he can do is shrug and say to keep doing what they're doing. I wouldn't be as hard on him if the offense actually looked disciplined, but they don't, from top to bottom.
  19. Craig Counsell is officially Craig Counsell again.
  20. As P.O'ed as I am right now, that made me laugh out loud.
  21. Rivera with the game on the line. I'm gonna say this doesn't look good, but here goes.
  22. I was at the game, Wes. No, Jenkins did not get booed.
  23. No reason right now to think that our anemic offense will challenge Gregg in the bottom of the inning.
