  1. If they don’t have enough talent on defense to win now, than the elephant in the room is that Gutenkust has done a really bad job building that part of the roster, because it hasn’t been for lack of effort or investment. Numerous high picks and 1st rounders that have yielded pretty meh results. When all you have to show for it is one decent, not elite pass rusher plus one part time corner, that’s not good enough. If they can’t generate enough pressure with their front, which I think we know by now they can’t, it’s on Hafley to dial up some different blitz packages. Sure makes it tough to do that when your top corner is constantly absent. I’ll give credit to Gute at least for signing McKinney. I shudder to think where the D would be if he hadn’t.
  2. I’d have a hard time putting him top 5 until he can start winning some big games. I think you could put Reid, McDermott, maybe both Harbaugh’s in front of him. Then depending on who you talk to between Shanahan, McVay, Tomlin, maybe O’Connell and Sirriani. It’s all very subjective after the first couple.
  3. It obviously dropped, significantly. I mean, don’t you think that possible outcome was figured into the original computation? It wasn’t a mathematical certainty that we were going to score 7 points in 2 plays even after they failed. That’s just what happened in this instance. I mean, yeah, if you’re going to argue with mathematical and data-based principals, there’s no purpose in trying to convince you otherwise.
  4. Yes, yes it was. Okay, “a lot” is subjective, but increasing your win odds by 2% in one play is certainly not nothing. Again, just because it’s been pounded into everyone’s head for decades that “this is what you do here”, does not necessarily mean it increases your odds of winning. I’m not going to say I would have loved it if MLF had made the same decision (although I certainly would if he made it), but I’m also not all that crazy confident in our short yardage conversion chances as the Lions rightfully are in theirs. I’m not just going to totally disregard the analytics of that particular call, though.
  5. I would also like to add that, whatever love affair that America has with the Lions while they are still fresh and new, count me out of it. I think they are a dirty, arrogant team that is coached to be dirty and arrogant and has no respect for their opponents despite no historical accomplishments of their own. I think it’s been easy for them to look good with little adversity. I think if they face real adversity — a 2 TD deficit in a playoff game, for instance, the panic and finger pointing will set in. Either way, if we don’t beat them in January, I won’t be among those rooting for them to end the drought. I’ll hope they get their hearts ripped out of their chests again.
  6. Post-game Lions’ take: I am so sick of Matt Lafleur worrying about everything except his damn job. Terrible look for him to be involved in a pre-game altercation with a fan where he tells the fan to “shut the F up”. In no way is it your job to de-escalate situations with fans or interact with them in any way. What a bizarre explanation that he was “trying to de-escalate”. It’s an opposing, rowdy, probably intoxicated fan. Do you think they’re just going to listen to reason from the visiting head coach? Do not engage in any way. If security won’t address it properly, then address that with the NFL, after the fact. But as long as they are in the stands and not in your bubble, it is neither your responsibility nor your place to respond to any of it. It’s no wonder that our players are so easily baited by theirs when their own fans live rent free in the head of our HC.
  7. I don’t complain about officiating much, but what an absolute piss poor job by the crew tonight. The worst part was the consistency. Watson gets called for a pick play that costs us 7 points. On the very next drive, the officials decide to swallow their whistles when the Lions run a pick of their own. Then St Brown gets away with an absolutely blatant push-off which essentially sealed the game. Shame to have a game like this decided by an incompetent officiating crew.
  8. I know it seems crazy to people because it goes against everything we’ve ever known about football. But the call from his own 30 was the analytically correct call. By like, a lot.
  9. Yep. Here we are sitting here roasting him for going against the grain when it worked and he’s 12-1 and they’ve beaten some good teams. He’s going to be in a position where he’ll need 2 playoff wins to go to the Super Bowl and that’s all you can ask for. They didn’t lose to San Francisco last year because they got too aggressive and if he doesn’t get to the Super Bowl this year it will probably be because sometimes you lose to other really good teams in the playoffs. Campbell is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the league. Maybe, just maybe he makes decisions based on what he thinks will give his team the best chance to win, and not just to try to be the cool stepdad. Conventional wisdom does not always mean correct. There was a time in the NFL when 4th and 1 from your opponent’s 45 was pretty much an auto-punt.
  10. You need like 30 yards in today's NFL. You start at the 30 and you’re pretty much within FG range when you get under 60. It’s 2 plays and every defense out there is playing soft and guarding the sidelines. If the Lions started their final drive down 32-31, from their own 30, with 35 seconds left and no timeouts, I don’t think many of us would have been reasonably confident in making a stop.
  11. Yep. It’s one of the key components to championship level play, and they just don’t do it well enough. Aside from Gary’s occasional flashes, no one in the box does nearly enough to make the opposing QB uncomfortable. Van Ness continues to be a huge disappointment.
  12. To everyone who thought it was stupid, which were you more optimistic about? Stopping them on the play, or Jordan coming back and getting into FG range with 40 seconds to work with? There’s your answer. I felt hope when I thought they would kick. I lost all hope when they brought the offense back out.
  13. He falls down and you still can’t stop them 😅 Campbell just rubbed it in the faces of everyone who questions his decision making.
  14. Lol. 2nd and 17 and you’ve got nothing. Complete fail by the Packers’ D.
  15. Who could have predicted that the timeout we called back in the 3rd to avoid losing 5 yards on a 3rd down that we didn’t come close to converting anyway would come back to haunt us now? That sure is unexpected.
  16. Ballgame. Just so much better coached. MLF too busy barking about who knows what now.
  17. This 3rd down might be the play of the game.
  18. They’re too well coached. They’ll go down early and continue to milk the clock. They’re not going to just take it.
  19. Took all of 2 basic plays for the Lions to get back in FG range. Zero resistance whatsoever.
  20. Yeah, this game is ending 34-31 at the final whistle.
  21. Absolutely killer penalty. 3 points on this drive will not cut it.
  22. One great play and one incredible play from Love on this drive.
  23. No consistency from the defense at all today. They rise up and make an occasional great play or stop and then the next drive it’s just back to getting shredded.
  24. The middle of the field that I assume is Walker’s responsibility is just constantly wide open on these 3rd and 4th and shorts.
  25. You know most people were like 80% sure they were going to convert, though.
