  1. Mets just tied it up! Top of 9! 6-6! HOORAY!
  2. Mets just tied it up! Top of 9! 6-6! HOORAY!
  3. They aren't useless, they have their context, but for predicting how well someone will do in their next season (or next AB) it is about 45th on the list of things I would look at.
  4. Daniel Ray Herrera just pitched against the Cardinals. Promptly allowed his inherited runner to score.
  5. Of course I missed one! ha!
  6. help me out here, because I'm curious: if this is true, wouldn't a SABR manager then have a half-dozen very angry bench players because they never ever get to be used? Wouldn't a SABR manager then have a 19- or 20- man roster instead of 25? A SABR manager (and by this, I mean a manager that only manages with advanced metrics) would fail in probably most situations as a manager and wouldn't last very long. Real managers do use stats and even the advanced metrics (I'm sure that Roenicke has looked at them/used them in meetings with coaches and/or players) but they also must stroke the egos of players, unfortunately. There would be a massive revolt by the backup players, some of the guys in the starting lineup would eventually voice their displeasure that their friends aren't getting any playing time, and it could trickle down to the minor league players as well. You can still use bench guys, you can still use backups as much as need be. I don't think anyone is sticking up on the Brewers saying Craig Counsell and Josh Wilson need more playing time, though. My point is, you don't do things like: Having a LOOGY specialist come into face 5 RHBs because he "Has a decent screwball" even though he makes an average RHB hit like Pujols, or name your 8th inning guy to be a guy who makes lefties look like Joey Votto. You can rest Hart against a RHP who has a hard slider, because he hasn't hit that type of pitcher well in his career... you don't sit him against a guy because he's 1 for 4 in his career against him.
  7. Topper: Is Prince clutch? Most would say Yes. Last season he was about as far from "clutch" as a hitter of his caliber can be. Can you point me to a guy who is clutch? Some guy who performed consistently better in high leverage/clutch situations? I will ask this one question: Why didn't he want to be "clutch" early in games, or when the score was tied in the 5th inning, or when his team was behind in the 3rd? Why didn't he try that hard then? Hot streaks do happen, most stats people won't argue that they don't, what a "stats geek" will argue is that going forward you have NO IDEA when that hot streak will end, and that playing the better player is the better choice than playing the "hot hand". rwa: A SABR manager wouldn't want his manager to micromanage. Really. He wants his manager to macro-manage. To realize that over 162 games, playing the statistics, playing the odds, time and time again, will result in more wins than "playing a hunch" or "going with your gut". Briggs: Any SABR guy knows that a walk is not as good as a hit. But it is infinitely better than an out. Even a so called "productive out".
  8. Going backwards -- same team winners, playoffs or not. Morneau & Santana (06) - Yes Carpenter & Pujols (05) - Yes McDowell & Thomas (93) - Yes Eckersley (92) - Yes Pendleton & Glavine (91) - Yes Welch & Henderson (90) - Yes Hershiser & Gibson (88) - Yes Clemens (86) - Yes Sandberg & Sutcliffe (84) - Yes Fingers (81) - Yes Carlton & Schmidt (80) - Yes McClain (68) - Yes Gibson (68) - Yes Koufax (63) - Yes Don Newcombe (56) - Yes ---------------------- That's my list. I might've missed something... but no, it hasn't happened.
  9. I'm surprised he didn't make a "parents basement" reference.
  10. Click on the insert image icon (looks like a mountain kinda) then select "add from URL" and paste the url in there.
  11. Kotsay has the 10th most PA on the team, 245, Josh Wilson, OTOH, has 80 PAs. That's where your 5th OF/5th IF should be at. He's been the teams 4th OF all season, and has been put in horrible spots in the lineup almost always when he has played (hitting 2nd, 3rd or 5th way too often). He has a .694 OPS and he is by far the worst defensive OF we have. Yes, he's been fine as a PH (44 PA, .658 OPS... yeah, not the best in the league), the problem is, RR has NOT used him that way.
  12. I officially give up. That is all. 9 of his last 15 ABs: vs the Phillies, and the best pitchers in MLB. 11 PA's in 10 days. My only issue thus far with Green: 0 BB in 30ABs.
  13. JHJ is +2.3 total UZR/150 over the last 4 years, so he is basically average. The last time he played SS regularly (2009) he was +8.6 UZR/150. There is no way they keep 12 pitchers, heck, it might be more likely they keep 10. I would be ready to argue that someone should be fired if they kept 12 pitchers.
  14. Wow, that is crap if it's true. If they don't even make the NLCS.... Earning interest on 1,000 (average) per person, for... what? at least a month... if not 6? 45,000,000 earns a lot of interest.
  15. Since I started the thread, I have "best of" immunities. From...... to.... http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ulvdX-51fE/SZGv3zWR5jI/AAAAAAAAA5o/vI2TwkhtZyg/s400/Gehrig_%26_Ruth%5B1%5D.jpg
  16. Who knew they were printed in Fort Smith, Arkansas....
  17. Yuni has a 3 yr average UZR/150 of about -12. McGehee's 3 year average is about -2. He's actually in the positive this season. SS is more important than 3B defensively.... I'd just rather have McGehee.
  18. Oh, that happens all year, although the Brewers don't use a backpack, they have a purple suitcase, with wheels and everything.
  19. I'd rather have McGehee and Hairston as it puts by far the better defensive alignment out there, and McGehee and Yuni are basically a wash on the season.
  20. You could take the Yellow line from Skokie, just off the interstate at Dempster. There is a transfer at Howard to the Redline, but its all pretty easy and costs $2.25 I think per person.I second that thought. It is a really easy train ride, and you get dropped off about 1/2 a block from the stadium.
  21. Hey, Casey is really squaring up on the ball! Better keep him in there vs RHP!
  22. FT is Fastball-Two Seem IN is Intentional walk, I believe. UN is "unknown"
  23. Find a way to get a dark room. Like, pitch black. Even if it is done by building a fort with blankets over your bed. It will help you sleep in the mornings/daytime immensely. Think about either a white noise machine, or a fan, or something of that ilk if noise is waking you up. Lay off the caffeine, cut way back, and don't have any within 3 hours of when you are trying to sleep.
