  1. Yes, there's only been 1 team without a top 10 player to win a title in the last 20 or so years, still, there's also only been 1 team without a solid C since the Bulls... and the Bucks have one of the... 6 or so of those in the league. They'll play solid defense, play .500 or a bit better, make the playoffs, and maybe even win a series. That's the most you can expect out of Milwaukee, until they get the #1 pick and draft the right guy. The entire Bucks organization was so dysfunctional 3 years ago, its amazing how far its come since then. I mean, they were relying on Richard Jefferson & Charlie V in 08-09. I really think they should entertain all offers on Bogut & Jennings & everyone else, and stockpile as many draft picks as they possibly can for the next two years and blow everything up. The whole "Bogut for Bynum" thing would be horribly stupid, as we'd be taking on money and getting the worse player.
  2. So you're saying you don't think he could get a 1 yr/6M deal if they cut him? He'd be a million up if he accepted arby in that scenario.
  3. Who is going to be good, besides Miami and Chicago? Boston is old and has made a huge mistake messing with Rondo's head by dangling him trying to get Paul, Orlando is on the verge of trading Howard. The Bucks were horrible last year, but they missed more games and minutes from their rotation guys BY FAR, over any other team in the league. When you're 9th and 10th guys are suddenly your 6th and 7th guys, its tough to win. I have hope for the season, I think the Bucks relatively young legs will help them win a couple extra games.
  4. I agree, and this is out of my own pure curiosity... but don't teams have access to the sort of video NFL guys do? The "Raw feed" if you will, multiple camera angles, etc, etc. to access this sort of stuff? Heck, they even gave it to people for free at mlb.com for the playoffs I think. Anyway, I'd imagine that Nakajima will sign a 1 year deal with the Yankees, and be a FA after next season. He gets the chance to prove himself vs MLB pitching, and be a free agent as well.
  5. At least A-Rod was 25 and played probably an average to above average SS. If the Rangers were a team that was in a position to afford to give a player a contract like that, it would have been a good contract. He played three years for the Rangers, OPS'ed over 1.000 over the period, and led the AL in HR every year.Yep, that deal was fine for the Rangers, it was their idiocy in their other spending that killed them.
  6. But Hairston plays above average defense at 5 positions and about average defense at SS and CF. McGehee plays a well below average 3B. Hairston's value is in his versatility and ability to fill in for both injuries and "I need a day off" guys. Right now, there is no one on the roster who can fill that spot, while last year, the Brewers had 3 guys who could (Counsell, Wilson, JHJ). He'll be missed, a lot, but it sounds like he wanted to go back to the west coast.
  7. Is it 10% in MLB? I'm pretty sure it was mandated to be 3% in the NFL (or the NBA) on the playing contract, and obviously a lot more for commercials, etc. That was my thought, 10% seems crazy high. Yeah, I was just guesstimating, from doing some reading its closer to 5%.
  8. That makes sense.... I mean, 35% income tax + 10% Agent fee....
  9. No, it actually comes from defensive data and how well guys performed who played both positions, relative to their peers. So, a guy who played both CF and LF in the same season would (typically) be an above average LF, and a below average CF. Over years and years of data, it would show time and time again that a guy who played LF or RF when compared to LF/RF would be worth about 10 runs more compared to the average LF/RF than he would be compared to the average CF. The runs/wins correlation is simply that 10 runs is worth about 1 WAR over the course of a season in the current run environment.
  10. I agree with the sentiment but had he not been a lifelong Brewer, I think thoughts would've been different. Signing a 35 year old injury prone DH-only guy...
  11. Its not coming from some random decision to give CF a premium, it comes from years of defensive data. From guys who played both positions. An average CF is about 10 runs better than an average LF. (Sorry, that was the first blog post I came about, and it only has 1 seasons worth of data, but you can get the jist of it from there).
  12. Probably not for individual players for an individual season, but over the course of a season for a full team, (or a player for his career) yes, there is. They use (I believe) a "brute force" method of % of balls in play turned into outs by the defense, and then do a league-wide comparison, and then adjust based on the % of balls in play given up by the pitcher. I hope that makes sense. From B-R.com (which uses Total Zone):
  13. Would you buy a $10,000 car you saw a picture of? Probably not. Now magnify that by many millions of dollars and you'll see why it's not smart to go exclusively off of tape. I'm curious as to what you learn by seeing someone in person that you can't learn on video, especially HD video that I'm sure the japanese games were broadcast in.
  14. And because their all big-10 first team point guard and best player picked up a horrible 4th foul on an awful, awful call and had to sit for nearly 10 minutes.
  15. I don't understand why a guy who plays on Japanese television would be difficult to scout. I mean, don't they have guys who can go through tape?
  16. They managed to do that, but they still didn't have any Taylor Green shirts even during the playoffs. Unreal.
  17. I will never understand the love for Jack Morris. The whole "Best pitcher of the 80's" seems just arbitrary to me, and he really wasn't that much better than any of the other guys who pitched 1500+ innings (since you apparently want to not include Clemens & Gooden, who were by far the best pitchers in the 80's). He pitched one great World Series game, which everyone seems to remember. As for JimH's stats: Blyleven had 242 CGs and 60 shutouts. I think HOFamers need to be GREAT for an extended period of time, and Morris was never that guy. He was fortunate to play on great teams, so he won a lot of games, but I wouldn't call Tim Wakefield a hall of famer. Oh, and there is this list.... #55 in WAR (including actives) career, for guys not in the HOF. EDIT: Whoops, thats start of 2010, but as far as I know, he only moved up 1 spot (if no one else passed him).
  18. I kind of want to Thunder Gunn somebody. I am not sure what that is just yet, though.
  19. Because 2B usually hit better than SS's. He loses even more value if you move him to 2B.
  20. I thought this was pretty cool: http://darowski.com/ballot/ It has the HOF median on there, so you can really compare the players. What the three circles mean is linked down at the bottom of the page.
  21. Its not trading Kareem, but I want no part of Bynum, chronic leg/knee problems on big men never seem to get resolved. Oh, and I want no part of a guy who did this...
  22. It was a great game, but, cripes, it would be nice if they at least tried to look inside from time to time. They've been getting fewer and fewer post looks this season, hopefully Bergerren can spell some of that, and Frankie looks really good on the block (and he's a great passer) even though it looks like he's too uncoordinated to run.
  23. C'mon LA, look at that smile! That's worth a couple million alone!
  24. Meh, Rickey and Boggs would've been the guys the Internet would've championed.... Boggs moreso as Rickey got traded mid season.
