  1. This may be true, but I have yet to see Prince do that. He tends to shuffle his body and then try to spin and make a backhand tag, instead of just lowering his glove and accepting the throw right at 1B.
  2. I think no matter what the scenario is you throw Gomez breaking balls away and figure he'll swing at them, because he has done that his entire career. At least, if I'm a pitcher, that's what I'm doing, because it increases my chances of getting an out by over 9000.
  3. Yes, the decision to keep Almonte instead of Cruz may come back to bite the 'Crew in the tail. Also, as for the "baseless dislike" for Betancourt.... well, considering he's been named the worst every day player in baseball 3 years running, I'm not sure how the dislike can be "baseless".
  4. Why can't Lucroy hit 5th. Or 2nd. He really is the 5th best hitter on the team right now.
  5. Braun is a great player, but Tulo could edge his way into the best player in the game conversation this season.
  6. No one who falls off at 32 or 33 profiles that way, but pre-PED it happened all the time.
  7. Which essentially discredits UZRNot really. It just shows that what people think they see isn't always what actually happens. You are right, UZR measures Fielder against MLB players not college players. UZR doesn't measure balls thrown to 1B. People also think Jeter is a Gold Glove defender. That's just not even close to correct.... UZR 2008-2011 Tex: +14 (6th in MLB) Fielder: -14.7 (worst in MLB)
  8. The headline is totally misleading. Prince wants a long term deal, with someone, next year, after he becomes a free agent.
  9. http://cdn.crooksandliars.com/files/uploads/2009/05/gammons_joba_cee3c.jpghttp://blogs.dallasobserver.com/sportatorium/TV%20-%20Gammons.jpg
  10. Ned Yost wants to be an astronaut....
  11. I can't believe that these guys made it to pro baseball and are now that mentally fragile that they can't handle pitching outside of their specific designated inning. "Oh gosh. I just vomited all over myself because Coach asked me to pitch in the 11th and I'm only the 7th inning guy!"If its something that is handled properly from the beginning, then it shouldn't be a problem. The reason it isn't handled this way is because then the blame falls on the player for not performing if it doesn't work, not on the Manager for doing something out of the ordinary (even if it is statistically better).
  12. As PED testing gets better careers will get back to being closer to the normal curve. Guys playing until they are 40 won't be the norm anymore. That's what worries me about this deal.... as well as WAR graphs like these.
  13. If they do that I'm going to scream. Because its going to further shorten the bench and who knows the status of Morgan. So you're left with a bench that consists of Almonte/Kotsay and Counsell. Sadly, 2 moves for 2 players: Hawkins + Marcum for McClendon and Kottaras. Although now it appears as though Boggs for Morgan is happening as well.
  14. They needed to make room for Marcum. That's why he was sent down.
  15. Well, the reason he signed that is because of how the union has negotiated it's contracts. That players are under team control for 6 years and go through the arbitration process. He would've ended up making more money through 7 years than he would have otherwise, and maybe a bit less over 8. I will go on record that this exact same deal probably could've been done 2 years from now, instead of 4.5 years from him being a free agent. I can't help but think of Alphonso Soriano's deal with the Cubs...
  16. http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/580415/Wilson_DP2.gifYep. Marginal difference defensively. I don't think Yuni has moved that many steps total to field a ball and make a throw this year.
  17. The problem is that upgrade could've been had at SS for the cost of Mark Kotsay. Or if you disagree, at least a reliable second option could've been had. I'm not taking money out of the equation.
  18. Because when you're in the playoff hunt, every single win matters. Because the difference between Yuni and almost anyone else at SS is 1 to 2 wins over the course of a season. Those two wins are worth much more to the team than "marginal".
  19. Woods in is near the West Allis area of town, lots of corner bars around that area within stumbling distance of your hotel.
  20. And at least they put Counsell in on defense, where his value is utilized.
  21. Baseball-Reference uses ERA to calculate WAR, and they had WOLF at 2.1 WAR last year, which equates to ~11M.
  22. Because McGehee doesn't have 4 years of terribleness to fall back on. He's been average for 2 seasons in a row. Betancourt has been touted as the WORST every day player in baseball for the last 3 years. That is not hyperbole. Maybe Prince needs to make that play, but Betancourt has an 8 foot wide square to throw that ball into and he managed not to do it.
  23. I'm pretty sure Braun thought that ball bounced and tried to throw out the guy at 1B. At least, that's where his throw went.
