  1. And how much of an improvement Dickerson and Cain will be over all the AB's Gomez had this season.
  2. They made a huge change to the ball right around 1918 or 1919 (And they've changed it about 4 times since then). That was the main reason for the HR spike. Ruth was still great, but you went from hitting a ball of yarn with cowhide around it to a solid core, tightly wound similar to now baseball.
  3. Summary: 1st hitter: Ground out. 1 out. 2nd hitter, Pujols. Routine fly ball to LF. Braun breaks in, ball goes over his head for a double. 3rd hitter: Axford replaces Wolf. Halladay again hits a fly ball to LF. Braun breaks in. Ball goes over his head. NO DOUBLES RYAN. WE WERE UP 3. 4th hitter: Schumacher Plunked. 5th hitter: 1st and second, Molina K's. 2 out. 6th hitter: Miles reaches on an error by Prince. Run Scores. 3-2. 1st and third. 7th hitter: Rasmus BB. 8th hitter: Up now. Hoffman replaced Axford.
  4. Dear Mr. Braun, Take some fly ball practice this off season instead of hitting the bars every night. Sincerely, Your 2011 Pitching Staff
  5. Can someone explain why pre-draft physicals aren't... well... mandatory? Especially for guys who will be going in the first few rounds?
  6. Witrado is also the guy who called the Brewers defense "middle of the pack" this season. I wouldn't believe anything he said about anyone's defense.
  7. Deadspin re-posted Red Smith's story about the HR.... wish people would write like that these days...
  8. OPS+ shows how well a player did compared to his peers in a given season and is park adjusted. I really think it's about the best way to compare hitters of different era's. As for voting for Ruth, well... as good as he was, compared to his peers.... none of his seasons compare to Bond's 3 best.Yes, they were steroid enhanced, but, so was everyone else, and Bonds was STILL that much better than league average.
  9. Instead of being in the Media for about 4 hours, this story has now dragged on for 2 extra days. I don't think it's turning people off. There's no such thing as bad publicity.
  10. I don't think anyone here, aside from maybe the one guy who said "Braun should win a gold glove because he's made no errors" last season, who has watched Braun would say he's a good defensive OF. He has the tools to be a good defensive OF, but he doesn't care enough to become one. And yes, I say he doesn't care enough, because he doesn't adjust his position based on the batter or the game situation 95% of the time. Watch Gomez or Cain out there, moving in our out, shading LC or RC depending on who is up, then look at Braun, still standing in the same patch of replaced turf in LF.
  11. Considering Hardy completely refused moving positions while he was in Milwaukee, which, in essence, is what got him shipped out of town, I can't imagine him taking a non-starting job.
  12. Surprised there's no love for Eddie Matthews at 3B, honestly, his 5-year peak was higher than Schmidt's, as was his 10 year line (53-62 for Mathews, 76-85 for Schmidt).
  13. Ruth, with Josh Gibson being a close 2nd behind the plate.
  14. MLB.comI think Russ's point was that every pitcher in baseball history will have a significantly higher ERA the more runners there are on base. You can't score 4 runs with the bases empty. For example: Yovani Gallardo ERA Leading Off 0.53 Bases Empty 0.49 Runner on 1B 1.63 Runner on 2B 4.85 Runner on 3B 16.20 Runners 1B, 2B 3.21 Runners 1B, 3B 17.18 Runners 2B, 3B 40.50 Bases Loaded 14.73
  15. Still can't believe they didn't get a deal with Uecker. Someone should've tipped them off. Today's game brought to you by NYCE. Real. NYCE.
  16. Anyway, it was the correct call, and even if it sucked, it was posted in the clubhouse, and his caddy, the crowd, a rules official, everyone there, should have told him it was a bunker. Imagine if he'd had made the par put, thinking he'd won... only to finish 3rd.... As for the reason the rule is in place, I believe it's two fold, 1) grounding the club in the bunker would allow you to move the sand out of the way from behind the ball, allowing a much easier shot, secondly, not being able to ground it and get a feel for the specific bunker gives an added penalty for hitting into the hazard.
  17. We were trading the player making more money, and giving money for salary relief. That is different than trading for the player making less money and getting money in return, e.g., Trading Prince to the Yankees for some A-baller and $20M).
  18. This explains who #58 was warming up today in the bullpen... I was in the bleachers and couldn't see the scoreboard for the info.
  19. Not going to finish the quote? So, when taking into account the defensive part of the game, hey, UZR measures what defense does (prevents runs) really well! Defensive stats are what they are, Dewan himself puts them at about "60% of the truth", but they are still much, much better than simply looking at fielding percentage, and they are improving every year. Fly balls are now measured by time in the air, along with location. Ground balls now include a speed component (slow, medium, hard). Pos just made a long, rambling, awesome blog post on Dewan's Plus/Minus. If you don't think that's better and more informative than "Oh, he threw it bad or bobbled it 9 times out of 243" then I suppose I don't know what to tell you. Ryan Braun did not make an error last year. If you think he's even close to being a decent defender, I am not sure what to tell you. I haven't heard much since this article was written, but if those cameras are in place everywhere (they were supposed to be for this season), there will be a huge coup in defensive stats once the data becomes available.
  20. Grrrr, why are we slashing payroll? Why can't we spend that much on 1 guy? Do you like the present format of spending the same amount on several useless guys. Go ahead and project the roster the next 5 years and tel me when paying 1 guy big bucks is going to be a problem. Yeah, I mean, I'd much rather be locked into Carlos Lee for the next 2 years than have Suppan and Hall's deals coming off the books this season.
  21. Nyjer Morgan plays CF and Braun plays LF, so there is a pretty steep positional adjustment factored into WAR for the two positions. LF is the 2nd easiest position to play, Morgan already has a +1.0 WAR head start over Braun just because he plays CF. I prefer WAR to many other things, because it does have that positional adjustment and also includes defense in it's factors, and using linear weights to derive it's values, it's actually fairly straight forward. Each play has an average run value, whether it is on offense or defense, and if you add up all those plays or non-plays you get the total run value, which is then transformed into WAR. It's not that defense is half the picture because they arbitrarily decided it would be, it's because that's how the run values of the plays made or not made come out to be. UZR explained, very well over at Yahoo
  22. Lies! He's gonna hit .400 next year!
  23. Look into getting a bar-tailgate package + tickets to the Packer game if you can't find them via stubhub/whatever else. A lot of bars put together lots of packages for home games.
