  1. Yet, every hitter starts his swing before the ball is even thrown. The only thing not firing is his arms/wrists if the pitch is poor. It's no different than a guy getting picked off.
  2. Not overly compelling. If the pitcher is on the rubber and the batter refuses to get in the box to stall for more look at replay, the umpire will just declare a strike on the batter and the chance to challenge will be over. Rule 6.02 ©: There's no way an ump is going to call a strike in the 10 seconds it would take someone in the booth to decide if the play needed to be reviewed or not.
  3. I'll be damned. I didn't know Keltner was from Wisconsin. Ya, that game broke Joltin' Joe's heart (and his wallet). The Heinz 57 company were going to shoot a commercial with Joe to endorse their products. They had a $10,000 check they were going to give him if he extended his streak to 57 games. That game was on July 17th, 1941. The next day, he started another streak, hitting in 16 straight games. That's pretty incredible, if you think about it. He hit safely in 72 of 73 games. In that 73 game span, the Yankees went 55-16. The Yankee Clipper hit .408 in those 73 games, with 25 doubles, 6 home runs, 20 home runs and 73 RBI. His slash line was a whopping .471 OBP/.738 SLG/1.209 OPS. Wow. If the summer of '41 wasn't the best in baseball history, with DiMaggio hitting in 56 straight, and Ted Williams hitting .406, the last time anybody has hit .400, it' pretty darned close. Over that same stretch of time (May 15th through August 2nd) Teddy Ballgame hit .430 /.559/.744/1.303 with 17 HR, 19 2B and 12 (!!!) strikeouts.
  4. I'm with you in general. Take managers mostly out of the process as is the case in college football. The one thing though which would need to be worked out is if say the team on defense is worried that a call could be overturned, the pitcher can't just get on the rubber and try to quick pitch before the replay guy has a chance to buzz down. I watch a ton of college football and the one big flaw in their system now is that with so many offenses running these very quick to the line and snap systems, often the replay official lacks the time to buzz down before an offense gets the next snap off, negating the chance for a replay when one was warranted. This is especially true if an offense fears a play by them might get reviewed. They'll quick snap the ball in a blink. The difference is, in baseball, the hitter still has to get in the box for the pitcher to pitch.
  5. Come on. They don't need to do that. They just need to do it the same way college football handles replay. Have a guy in the booth. He clicks a button if the play needs to be reviewed. Home plate up calls time. 60 seconds. Play is reviewed. Done.
  6. I think they should just sit down and hold a symposium Kraftwerk's influence on modern alternative music. http://twohundredpercent.net/?p=6088
  7. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot have a player freezing on contact AND going on contact. I disagree. Going on "contact" only applies if the ball is clearly going to be on the ground. Guys don't take off running on contact if the ball is up in the air - and that includes line drives. If you're at 3b and the ball is a line drive OR a fly ball, the first reaction needs to be back towards third - if you see the ball is going to fall or get through the infield you'll be able to score easily either way. The contact play should really only come into play on anything hit on the ground. So, you think in the time it takes your neurons to fire and make your legs push off either towards the bag or towards home plate, you can tell if a ball is going to 1-hop the 3B or be caught 6" off the ground? I don't think you can do that. You may be able to in lower levels of baseball, but when the ball is coming off the bat at 100+ MPH, there isn't time for your first motion to be determined that quickly.
  8. Date: May 27th MLB.com game recap : http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_05_27_balmlb_milmlb_1&mode=recap&c_id=mil Video: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/11493214/v33230743/must-c-clutch-gallardos-pinchhit-walkoff-double IGT: viewtopic.php?f=65&t=31371 Summary : 1. Brewers blow a 5-0 lead, O's go up 6-5. 2. Brewers tie it in the bottom of the 9th at 6. 3. After a scoreless top of 10, O's get the first 2 outs to bring up Mark Reynolds (and the pitcher's spot next) 4. Brewers are out of position players. O's Manager, Buck Showalter intentionally walks Mark Reynolds, putting the winning run on first. 5. Gallardo pinch hits. 6. With a 2-0 count, Yovani doubles. Scoring Reynolds. 7. Pandemonium. 8. This is my favorite Joe Block call so far. He was seriously fired up.
  9. Hairston and K-Rod were both traded for in July.
  10. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot have a player freezing on contact AND going on contact.
  11. You're right, but to put this in perspective: He's 2.5 months older than Wiggins and 3.5 months older than Parker. I doubt those two would've done much better vs NBA competition last season with Larry Drew telling them to go stand in the corner every game.
  12. That's because that's all they know about the Brewers. And because Tim Kurkjian ran in it. Gotta self promote whenever possible!
  13. http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2014-02-27/giannis-antetokounmpo-bucks-nba-greece-thanasis-antetokounmpo-d-league-kostas-antetokounmpo-philadelphia-sixers Draft for the best talent. I would hate to see them trade Middleton for anyone in the 20's as I view Middleton as a solid, solid piece going forward. He's good defensively, can play the 2 or the 3, and can shoot the lights out. If he played for the Spurs or Heat he'd be known through the league.
  14. He was utterly fantastic his first 20 outings. His last 16 he's been very pedestrian. I can see why people would be worried (I'm worried...) 16.1 IP 16H 5BB 15K 4.41ERA
  15. Head to head does not factor in until the 3rd tiebreaker. Here are the scenarios if the US LOSES to Germany. A Win or a Draw and they advance. And Adamb, to answer your question: The first 3 games are what is called "pool play", 2 teams from each pool of 4 advance to the round of 16 (where there can no longer be any ties). You get 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
  16. http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?p=776153#p776153 That's a summation of the "best of" I think.
  17. Sorry but OPS isn't always the best indicator of production. Overbay has hit a lot of balls hard, has gotten key hits driving in runs in key situations, and has shown patience at the plate with 23 BB. Overbay's not a long term solution and if they can upgrade, great but as far as what he's done this season, it's been better than I expected. I don't trust Francisco. When he's hot, he's hot, but when he's cold he's awful He's already started to tail off, hitting .185/.241/.444 in his last 20 games. Yep, with his 38 PA's with RISP, Overbay has been all world. Can you tell me why he doesn't try that hard when no one is on base? Why he only decides to get hits when men are on? Why he doesn't think being good at hitting with no one on base is important?
  18. Spent some time looking at MLB's CAPTCHA today, my code breaking days must be behind me. Couldn't figure it out to automate some votes. Haha.
  19. You say that likes it a given Wiggins would stay after 5 years if they're winning. Why? He may very well want out of town no matter what. I don't know that's the case, but that's the type of thing you have to take into account. I get what you're saying about Parker being a complacency pick. Part of me agrees with you on that. Then again, I keep hearing the "experts" say he can step in and score 20 a game immediately. Do you know how many guys averaged 20 a game in the NBA last year? Only 15. I could work with that. Money. No player leaves after 5 years. They leave after 7 at the earliest. To stay for 5 years, the player would have to forgo his initial extension, accept the qualifying offer (at a likely lower salary) and then play out that year without any further seasons of guaranteed money to become an unrestricted free agent. For first-round draft picks, restricted free agency is only allowed after a team exercises its option for a fourth year, and the team makes a Qualifying Offer at the Rookie-scale amount after the fourth year is completed.
  20. I want nothing to do with any pitcher named Joaquin. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1368&dat=19821021&id=s3pQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=JRIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5320,4387247

  22. In 1927, Jack Scott of the Phillies becomes the last pitcher to start and finish both ends of a double header. Of course, this could still happen.... but I doubt it http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CIN/CIN192706191.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CIN/CIN192706192.shtml
  23. My memory is of a guy who looked outmatched when we needed him most. My memory of him was of a guy who looked like he didn't belong on a major league roster. And this is why you shouldn't trust your subjective memory.
  24. You mean the guy with the career 3.74 FIP and ERA+ of exactly league average? Yes, clearly, he didn't get it done. And clearly, he didn't get tired after they jumped him up an additional 65 innings in 2012 over his previous career high and had him run completely out of gas down the stretch -- where he had an ERA over 7 in September.
  25. Interesting view. In hindsight, that is probably what should have happened. A whole new thing to teach Wang to do!
