  1. If Diaz is available I sure hope Stearns is on it.
  2. My strategy would be to stay away from the top-tier of deadline moves and play for cheap, lower-tier bullpen guys. The Brewers' bullpen is so terrible that a pair of average to below-average relievers could make a difference IF other members of the current team start performing. Ultimately that's what it will take anyway, which is what I think Stearns has been getting at in his comments--trades are not going to right this ship but a couple of small moves could help considerably.
  3. Now 3-0 since I gave up on the season. I will continue to report daily...wouldn't want to jinx this. Would like to watch tomorrow's game but that would jinx it also.
  4. Based on the TSA's Instagram page I suspect they find people with all sorts of stuff. I suspect the number of guns is in the single digits.
  5. The idea that Pittsburgh or Cincinnati has been more successful than Milwaukee is insane. Who cares about a one-and-done Wild Card loss or a LDS sweep? The Brewers have more playoff wins in the last 10 years than every one of those teams except Kansas City. There’s nothing uniquely bad about the Brewers, they are dealing with the same rigged economic system as the rest of these teams.
  6. In terms of actual talent I think the 2019 team is comparable to 2018. Some great moves were made to retool and the Opening Day roster was pretty good. They won a bunch of games early on. But in retrospect the 2019 title chase ended when Knebel went down. Nobody has filled those shoes. Nothing of value from Jimmy Nelson. Still no Brent Suter. The rest of the surprises and disappointments mostly even out. The offensive flaws could probably have been overcome, but the bullpen carried a disproportionate weight in 2018 and it is a disproportionate burden in 2019. At this point a turnaround would be nothing short of a miracle. To me a true "rebuild" means trading Yelich so the answer to the thread title is no.
  7. Tres Leches Cafe and the AZ State Capitol--both great spots near downtown!!! Also, what's bugging me is Amazon. My general indifference towards them has gradually trended toward hatred over the past several years. It's probably my hatred of consumerism being projected on them, but still. And no better day to hate them than on their made-up July holiday.
  8. Completely support the players--the current economic system is outdated and from a pre-analytics era. The lack of rule changes in baseball is infuriating...the game is virtually unrecognizable from 10 years ago and nothing has been done to compensate for it. Happy to see they are trying things in the Atlantic league at least. Unfortunately fans seem to be opposed to rule changes for some reason despite what I think is a clear and obvious need for major changes. And yes, competitive balance. A huge problem in all American sports leagues. Owners of bad teams need to be hit in the pocketbook--something they will never agree to without a strike. The players are absolutely right--tanking (or even cheap mediocrity) needs to be punished!
  9. I'm not trying to start a giant fight with the college thing, but you have to admit that there are a ton of parallels...especially when I see arguments for how the amount of revenue generated should determine pay or that "capitalist" principles should dictate salaries. I don't think that's the best way to do things. The success of a sport depends collectively on all participants. My personal opinion is that collective bargaining is the best way to get a fair contract for everyone--which means treating lower-level/minor league players better than what they are "worth" in the free market. Minor leagues are a necessary part of the system that leads to revenue at the highest levels. So are women's sports. Plus it's the right thing to do.
  10. The theme I see coming through here is that NCAA athletes really need to get paid. Those are people who are generating a ton of revenue and not getting any of it. They are really getting screwed.
  11. A team can be both mediocre and a playoff contender in the double-Wild Card era. The 2019 Brewers are both. One of the 5 teams in the NL Central is going to be a mediocre division champion. History suggests that mediocre team could easily go on to win the World Series. One way to look at the current situation is that the Brewers have a golden opportunity to sneak into the playoffs if the right moves present themselves at the deadline. Nobody will remember the 90-win Rays or the 89-win Mariners from 2018 but the 2019 Brewers are in a much different and more enticing situation.
  12. Based on run differential one could argue that coaching (and luck) are the only things keeping this team above .500. Frankly it's amazing this team is where they are right now, nothing about the numbers would suggest they should be competing for a division title. And if they were in any other division they would be double-digit games out of first. If the coaching staff somehow wills this team to the playoffs they all deserve raises and extensions.
  13. This franchise has seen one World Series in it's history. One, and there have been plenty of extended periods of comically futile ineptitide. This franchise is the definition of hell as far as sports franchises go. I would gladly lose 100 games fora few years if it meant a world series win. Most of us would gladly trade a WS title for 100-loss seasons. The problem is that it doesn't work that way and the far more likely scenario is trading 100-loss seasons for quick playoff exits. For every Kansas City there are several Baltimores.
  14. I honestly feel bad for Junior, he's completely lost up there.
  15. I wish people would stop with the sell BS. They are NOT going to be sellers..the problem is, it looks like they aren't going to be buyers either...the crickets are chirping in Stearns's office. Not doing anything is worse than either buying or selling. Not necessarily. Depends on what is available. It's too early for much trade action, except for Dipoto who has a trade addiction.
  16. Fireworks. I just want to go to bed.
  17. Progress is being made on bike infrastructure but ultimately they need to separate bike lanes from car lanes with a physical barrier. With e-bikes and e-scooters becoming more popular it is only a matter of time until we will need bike lanes on every major arterial street. Otherwise they have to use the sidewalk which is dangerous. I recently traveled to Irvine and was extremely irritated that they had no free floating rental services (cars, e-bikes, or e-scooters). I've come to rely on them so much that I felt lost without them, and frustrated that I had to spend so much money on rideshare for a 3 mile commute.
  18. Rizzo bails Kimbrel out after he forgets to cover 1B. Plenty of velocity but not much control.
