  1. It's easy to estimate what the Brewers would have to charge to break even on a streaming service. Lets assume they would like to make $25 million per year on a TV deal (which is approximately what they are making now). About 40,000-50,000 households watch Brewers TV broadcasts on any given night...but I'm not sure how many of them are unique. Lets generously say that a Brewers streaming service could get 100,000 subscribers. At that subscriber count, they would have to charge $250 per year, or $42/month for 6 months. If we assume they would run TV commercials, the price could potentially be less. The big loss for MLB would be the national TV deal, which would presumably collapse if everyone cuts the cord. That deal is the #1 source of revenue for the Brewers now. Being entirely dependent on local revenue would be very, very bad for the Brewers. They are much better off under the current system.
  2. I'm cheering for the Royals and Giants, but I expect a Birds vs. Birds World Series.
  3. It's interesting that big free agent contracts are not leading to postseason success. The top 17 highest paid players in baseball have all been eliminated from the playoffs. That's amazing.
  4. I really don't like Pacific Time for sports, but it is great for these west coast MLB games. I barely watched the Brewers this year because the games were already over before I could watch them. Kansas City is really something else right now. Not sure if it's luck or if they've figured out the formula to win low scoring postseason games.
  5. Lots of chatter in my department about the warm "blob" in the north Pacific and the non-existent El Nino. The same pattern as last winter is setting up again, at least for now. The first big cold front is coming this weekend. Who knows if that pattern will persist into winter or not.
  6. Finally. I'm in favor of all of them except for the no-pitch IBB. It would be nice to get the time of game back to around 2:30-2:40 like it was in the 1970s.
  7. Wow that was a classic.
  8. Picked up cheap tickets to see the Mariners on Saturday. It was nice to experience an intense game with a playoff atmosphere...and most importantly get in one last game before winter. I'm glad the Brewers season is over, that was painful and there really isn't anything redeeming about it. The situation for next year looks ugly so I'll probably just try to forget about it for awhile.
  9. Don't try to deny the inevitable... Royals over A's Angels over Royals O's over Tigers Angels over O's Giants over Pirates Nats over Giants Cardinals over Dodgers Cardinals over Nats Cardinals over Angels
  10. Woohoo! Only off by one game! However, that Red Sox World Series prediction...
  11. I don't see how firing Melvin is going to change anything. Attanasio is in on all the major moves. This is the team that Attanasio built as much as Melvin. Attanasio is the one who doesn't want to rebuild. When you look at the statistics, almost everyone performed as expected. There were really almost no surprises at all, positive or negative. Both the offense and pitching were right around league average. This is really just an incredibly average team. I don't care which coaches they fire/keep, pitching has gotten so good in this new deadball era that even an idiot like Ned Yost can get to the playoffs. It doesn't matter which order the pitchers come in when they are all good! Bullpen management is easy now. And who cares that they swing at everything, pitchers aren't issuing walks anymore and no longer groove fastballs when they are behind in the count. I do care about the stupid outs on the bases though. Anyway, the real problem is drafting/development. Every team fills in the gaps with trades and free agent signings like Melvin does. He's quite good at it, one of the best in baseball. The problem is when he has like 10 holes to fill every offseason because the Brewers can't develop enough players internally to fill the roster.
  12. The bending thing seems like a non-issue...the iPhone 4 reception problems were a much bigger problem. The phone sold anyway. I'm guessing most people will use a case anyway? Looking at the Youtube video--if I applied that kind of pressure to my laptop screen, it would bend/break as well.
  13. The season was realistically already over but tonight sealed the deal. When I look at this roster compared with 2011, it's amazing they got this far. Not sure how they are going to be able to turn things around.
  14. I was looking at some of the monthly maps instead of the 3-month D-J-F winter outlook. So it is correct that they are saying warmer and dryer. I still wouldn't put much stock into it though.
  15. It seems that my friends (grad students in their 20s) have about an even mix of iPhone and Android. Many of them are older models. I also know several people who do not have smart phones. The smart watch is intriguing to me because it would be much more portable than a phone. The technology isn't there yet. I would like to see one that is waterproof, has a GPS, and a much longer battery life than a phone. I think that in 3-5 years, the watch will become the 'tiny' phone that some of us are looking for--which will be a nice compliment to a larger, tablet-sized phone.
  16. The latest NOAA forecast calls for equal chances of above or below normal temperatures and precipitation this winter. None of the indicators are pointing very strongly in either direction at this time. I would tend to favor a slightly warmer than normal winter based on the possibility of a weak El Nino developing.
  17. In my opinion, there isn't much difference between Apple and Samsung/Android at this point. They are both great phones.
  18. Just got a 5C yesterday. AT&T gave me a $200 credit for my ancient iPhone 4. It was nice to finally upgrade. Had been thinking about a 6 but the new features didn't seem worth it. The larger screen is a downside to me (I use the phone for GPS tracking while running). Plus, $200 more and still 16 GB of storage? My understanding is that you can preorder the phone now. They will be in short supply on Friday.
  19. Anyone who stayed to the end deserves a medal or something.
  20. La Russa runs the show down there now. Gibson and the rest of the coaching staff can pack their bags as well.
  21. The Cards must smell blood in the water now. Two more wins and the Brewers will be essentially out of the NL Central race.
  22. Here's some numbers: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&storyid=104086&source=2 As you can see, the summer was indeed cool and wet compared to normal. This was the case for most of the Midwest. On the flip side, the Pacific Northwest has seen the warmest summer on record in many places. My parents in Milwaukee report that the summer weather was some of the nicest they have ever experienced. I'm sure many others appreciate the lack of major heat waves. Looks like a strong cold front will come through WI around the middle of next week...dropping high temperatures to the 50s/60s and bringing the first threat of frost to the northern part of the state.
  23. Preseason projections were for about 83 wins or so...currently on pace for 83 wins. So assuming the freefall ends at some point, it's fair to say the 2014 team met expectations. If the losing streak came in April and the winning streak now, none of this would be an issue.
  24. 397 feet...that's about as far as Logan can hit the ball!
