  1. I saw the video clip of the botched suicide squeeze. Even though Byrnes did the wrong thing by not trying to make contact, I kind of feel a little sorry for him. A small part of me can kind of understand the natural automatic tendency to pull the bat back after seeing where that pitch was headed. Probably since the days of Little League, guys who are trying to bunt have been pulling the bat back if the ball is way out of the strike zone. I think Byrnes was so caught off guard by the location of the pitch that the surprise of it overshadowed his sense of the situation and the importance of trying to make contact. So pulling the bat back was something of a natural reflex (maybe?) I think maybe it is a good lesson for all MLB hitters that they have to concentrate more and actually practice suicide squeeze bunts during batting practice. Be ready for any kind of pitch and don't get caught off guard if the location is unusual.
  2. Is this the team plane for the players? Or is this just one of their regular passenger planes?
  3. My feelings are starting to change now. The Cardinals are really starting to worry me. Their 5th starter (Jaime Garcia) already seems better than our 2nd starter (Randy Wolf). Their unknown nobodies (such as David Freeze) are coming on strong so quickly. Colby Rasmus seems to be taking things to a higher level now. Guys like Brad Penny are starting to "find it" thanks to working with Dave Duncan. I am also pretty sure the Cardinals will make trade acquisitions and get even stronger as the season goes on. I am totally feeling sick to my stomach about them running away with the division. It is also bugging me that they have historically won so much and never seem to decline. As much as I know we are in the heart of the wild card race, it just seems even tougher to win the Wild Card considering how many more teams are involved. I really hope the Brewers get it going fast now. I don't like this sinking feeling.
  4. I have never been one to bash Anthony Witrado, and I never read his articles deliberately looking for something to criticize. However, I have to admit that I was stunned at how many grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and run-on sentences Witrado had in the Brewers Blog when writing about Carlos Gomez needing an MRI. I know the blogs are somewhat informal compared to proper news articles, but his writing style was still very alarming. It was almost as if he writes the way people casually speak rather than writing the way a professional journalist would.
  5. For me, it's just hard to know if the recent struggles are indicative of the Brewers being a bad team or whether it's just part of the normal ebb and flow of a long 162 game schedule. I am trying to keep some perspective, but it's getting awfully hard lately.
  6. I remember a certain baseball team that had a struggling closer and was blowing saves at an alarming rate. That team was in last place through the month of May. Guess what? That team ended up winning the 2008 NL Wild Card. KEEP THE FAITH !!! GO BREWERS !!!
  7. I am also starting to become suspicious why the Brewers did not give Hoffman regular work in spring training. They handled him like they handled Eric Gagne during the spring of 2008. Unfortunately, they are getting similar results now.
  8. I only recall Trevor throwing his changeup once this season. It was to Jason Giambi when he struck him out to the end the game. Other than that, I am stunned that Hoffman continues to rely on medicore fastballs. That is not how he became a Hall of Fame closer. I also think Ken Macha needs to figure it out much faster when Hoffman clearly doesn't have it. A homerun, a hard single, and a ringing double should have been a big wakeup call to the manager and pitching coach. Not even a visit to the mound? And can we please get rid of that countdown to 600 saves thing in Miller Park? I think it is cursing us.
  9. For those who say that the salary cap and parity are why the NFL is so popular I think that those reasons are very low on the list. Whether those reasons are low on the list or high on the list, I am pretty sure football fans appreciate not having to feel like they have to compete with one hand tied behind their back. I am pretty sure they appreciate being able to get excited about their star players rather than having to worry about losing them. I am also sure they appreciate the fact that it feels like the league actually cares about their franchise and their feelings. A special thank you to all the posters in this thread who understand that there is no "market" in baseball and that fans have no interest in baseball resembling "real life". I couldn't have phrased it better myself.
  10. I would absolutely take a year off if it resulted in a meangingful salary cap and a level playing field. In fact, I would be happy to take several years off. I was actually VERY disappointed when the last work stoppage ended. I wanted to see the owners hold out longer because I know they would have ultimately won. The players have no leverage at all. Where else are they going to earn the salaries that they are making? If given a choice a between playing baseball with a salary cap or getting a real job in the real world, they would have caved eventually. The owners need to be strong because they hold all the cards.
  11. For those of us who remember the Chad Moeller or Glendon Rusch era, it is very obvious that Jeff Suppan is going to be released at some point later this year. This whole situation has the exact same rotten stench that we have already experienced before. On the day Suppan gets released, everyone is going to say "We all knew he stunk a long time ago so why didn't the front office cut him sooner? What took them so long to figure it out?" If the Brewers management wants to avoid similar criticism and win more games in the process, they should study their own history and learn something from it. Just cut Suppan now and quit wasting time. I am not interested in giving Suppan a few more starts so he can get lit up and blow more games. It's gotten past that point now. I want the Brewers to be proactive rather than reactive. It's getting very late.
  12. If you consider that Suppan never gets past the 4th or 5th inning, he is also killing our bullpen. That affects the team even in games when Suppan does not pitch. It's much worse than just waiving a white flag once every five games.
  13. Management should issue a refund and personally apologize to every Brewer fan who watched or attended this game. There was absolutely no reason to have Suppan out on the mound today. Every game matters, and you can't generously give away free wins to your rivals. We all knew Suppan would get shelled. This was clear to everyone.
  14. I can't take this anymore . . . . I honestly feel like driving to Miller Park right now and giving Doug Melvin and Ken Macha an earful. Even the casual fan can see how TERRIBLE and HORRENDOUS Jeff Suppan is. The guy has absolutely no life on his pitches. No velocity, no movement, no nothing. He was terrible last year, He was terrible this spring, and he is terrible right now. Everytime Suppan takes the mound, fans in Wisconsin just cringe and feel sick to their stomach. Everytime Suppan throws a pitch, I hold my breath and have the look of fear and death on my face. But somehow, the guys who have spent a lifetime in baseball and are being paid to be the experts still haven't figured out that Suppan has no business being on this team. What in the name of Ned Yost is going on out there? I don't understand how our front office can be so clueless. Do Melvin, Macha, and Attanasio understand how much Brewers fans hate losing to the Cubs? It's like they are giving our most hated rival a free welcome gift and giving us Brewers fans the finger. This is absolute garbage. Where is that venting thread?
  15. Even if the Pirates were willing to boost their payroll, it would still be very difficult for them to attract good players. Good free agents would either ignore them or just use them for leverage to get more money out of better teams. They are going to have to turn this thing around through their farm system. I don't see many other options. On a side note, I really wish it was the Cardinals that was going through that kind of mess. God has been way too kind to that franchise and their fans.
  16. I enjoyed the massacre, but I also felt really bad for the Pirates players and fans. After 18 years, I am sure they expected some return on their rebuilding efforts. It's gotta be a terrible feeling there.
  17. If the place actually had a baseball theme or a Ryan Braun theme, I would definitely be more interested. But if it is just another upscale restaurant, then I am not as excited.
  18. I thought he had a nice second half in 2008 with the Brewers. He seemed to do much better as a setup man rather than as a closer. He did do a lot of positive things off the field and had nice things to say about the city, the fans, and the organization. The irony is that when he was previously a Dodger, he actually ripped Milwaukee and the Brewers. He compared us to a Triple A franchise, and he complained about the hotels being either haunted or lousy. I remember Jim Rome was ripping on him because the Brewers actually had a better record than the Dodgers at the time. I guess a 10 million dollar contract can change your mind about a place http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Overall, I think his legacy will be tainted due to his name surfacing in the Mitchell Report.
  19. I just wish Uecker would make it clear right away if a ball is hit fair or foul. Sometimes he really leaves you hanging and wondering.
  20. I gotta admit that the moment Corey Hart misplayed the fly ball in the 9th inning, I had a "Kevin Barker" flashback. I was convinced the Cubs were going to rally back and at least tie the game. Thank god the Brewers held on . . . although it did get scary. I'll take the ugly win, but it would be nice to have a convincing victory for a change. Even when this team wins, they still look like a total mess. On a side note . . . these Cubs vs. Brewers games give me ulcers and headaches. I don't think there is a more obnoxious set of games between any two teams in all of sports. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b273/AJAY_02/brewers1-med.gif?t=1271370623
  21. So as I understand it, both our starting rotation and our bullen get weaker now. *Sigh*
  22. I am just sick of the lack of progress from this franchise. Is it asking too much to go into Wrigley Field and kick some butt for a change? It's been a very long time since we have shown anything impressive against them. Same old garbage for another year.
  23. I was hoping John Miller would slap Joe Morgan upside the head. It's just more living proof that once you are a member of the players union, the stupidity remains in your blood forever even well after you retire. All former players talk like that because they don't want to acknowledge any small / market large market difference. They all seem to believe that owners in small markets can also afford anyone they want to. The lies and propoganda just continue constantly. Even after John Miller explained to him how the Yankees make 470 million in revenue and the Brewers make 170 million in revenue, Joe Morgan still seemed very confused.
  24. I think Hardy sometimes has trouble keeping his head clear. When he slumps, he beats himself up and makes things worse. In my opinion, he can be prone to mental funks. He seemed very distracted by the talk of Escobar replacing him. I recall that he wanted some time off before reporting to the minors.
  25. I am glad that Citgo gas pump is gone. I would like to see Miller Park look more elegant and less cartoonish.
