  1. I'm shocked by all the complaints on this. We had three lefties in the bullpen, now we are down to two. This isn't about performance, its about who has options left. Stetter has one left, Parra/Narveson do not. Unfortunately, that is part of the game. If its between Stetter and CV going down, I think Melvin made the right choice.
  2. I signed up. This should be fun. I have a feeling I'll be selecting a lot of Huntsville hitters this year.
  3. Wow! There are some real surprises on the hitting side. Other than Garfield and Halton, everyone else was a surprise. I expected Kentrail Davis, Prince, and Dykstra to be assigned there.
  4. Yeah, I don't think he was held back due to arby reasons. With Stetter, Parrra, Narveson they have plenty of LHs out of the bullpen. The Brewers want him to get regular work, and that will only happen in AAA.
  5. It looks like we will have an all lefty bench now. With Heether optioned and Treanor traded, that leaves us with Counsell, Gerut, Inglett, Edmonds, & Kottaras...
  6. I'm definitely intrigued by Narveson. He got a lot of his K's with the batter looking. Not sure what to take from that but it was by far more than most other pitchers. I'm concluding that he must have some filthy stuff to confuse hitters that much. He would be great to have as depth, either in AAA or in the bullpen. If he starts next year in the rotation, I'll be worried. Just means our depth will be weak.
  7. Going into this season, I would have ordered the Brewers rotation as follows: #1 Gallardo #2 Parra #3 Bush #4 Suppan #5 Looper #6 McClung #7 Villanueva #8 Dillard #9 Capuano (expected to return mid-season) #10 N. Green #11 C. Wright #12 M. Burns In hindsight, that list looks pretty weak. However, I did not expect them to pitch this poorly. Suppan, Bush, McClung all missed significant time this year due to injury (including Capuano not recovering). Parra, Villanueva, Dillard, N.Green, C.Wright and to some extent Looper have all been ineffective. I would say that other than Gallardo, none of the starting pitchers performed up to expectation. You can blame Melvin all you want, but it is up to the players to perform. I agree Melvin should have gotten better depth (I felt that way at the begining of the season) but I did not expect the pitching to perform this poorly. The staff has collapsed this season and with it our chances of a playoff run. I won't let Melvin off the hook, but he doesn't deserve to be fired because of this.
  8. What has bothered me about Rivas is that he is being brought along so slowly. He has done extremely well this year, deserving of a promotion, but they have kept him in A+ all year. He is not exactly old for A+ but he is isn't young either. 23 is about average for A+. Generally, top prospects are young for their league. I've been hoping the Brewers would have promoted him to AA by now. They obviously want him to keep working on things in A+ otherwise they would have done so already. Still, this does get me more exciting about him. It will be interesting to see if the Brewers add him to the 40 man to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. That will tell us how high the Brewers are on him.
  9. Per Cot's: 1 year/$4.75M (2009), plus 2010 option signed by Milwaukee as a free agent 2/13/09 09:$4.75M, 10:$6M 2010 option increases to $6.5M with 30 starts in 2009 $0.75M in performance bonuses (starts 19-30) if club exercises 2010 option, Looper may decline (no buyout) if club declines 2010 option, Looper receives a $0.75M buyout ($1M with 30 starts or 180 IP in 2009) Looper has thrown 149 innings in 26 starts so far. If he continues to start, he should easily surpass 180IP/30Gs which will cost them $250K to $500K. Any chance the Brewers put him in the bullpen and instead start Dillard, Narveson, Wright, or Cody? Looper has not performed and the Brewers may want to "see what they have" in some of these other marginal prospects. (edit: bumped up font size in quoted material --1992)
  10. I enjoy making up my own list prior to the P50 coming out then seeing how I do compared to the list. I'm usually pretty close but there are always exceptions (I had Odorizzi in the top ten). However, it seems strange to me to argue about who should be in the 40-50 range. You could shuffle anyone from 40-70 in any order and make a case for it. I have a hard enough time doing a top 25. I don't even attempt ranking above that.
  11. I had Rivas and Jones on the bubble. It is very unlikely teams will try to stash a high A player on their roster for a year. It has been done before but rarely. That is why the Brewers may try to sneak him through. Jones certainly could be added. I won't complain if they do. I do not believe Axford needs to be protected. This is only his third professional season, but it depends on when he signed his first contract. The rules for this are overly complex so I won't attempt to guess. I agree though that if he is eligible for the draft, the Brewers need to protect him. I'd take him over a Chris Smith/Chase Wright any day.
  12. I'd be thrilled to get Harang or Arroyo assuming we don't need add any decent prospects in the deal. I'd be ok if we just need to throw in a low level prospect to seal the deal. May not be necessary as Cincy will be saving a few mil since Hall makes less than either of the two.
  13. I'm sure I'm missing a few, but here is my list (P50 #'s in parenthesis). The Brewers have probably a dozen players on the 40 man that could be released/DFA'd in the offseason to make room for these prospects. So I don't think that will be a real issue. It will be interesting to see who will go and who will be added. The Brewers always surprise me every year. Last year's surprise add was Mark Rogers and that sure worked out for them. Maybe Mike Jones or Adam Heether will be this year's surprise. Rule 5 Draft Eligible Players Includes all players signed/drafted before 2006 and 2006 draftees who signed at age 19 or older. Who I think we need to add (5): Zack Braddock (#7) - AA Taylor Green (#8) - AA Lorenzo Cain (#9) - AA Chris Cody (#19) - AAA Josh Butler (#23) - AA Top remaining unprotected players: Amaury Rivas (#33) - A+ Brendan Katin (#43) - AAA Mike Jones - AA Adam Heether - AAA Mike McClendon - AA Nick Green - AA The rest: AAA: Joe Koshansky, Sam Narron AA: Chuck Caufield, Robert Hinton, Josh Wahpepah, Dave Welch, Bo Wright A+: Chris Errecart, Mike Ramlow A-:Brock Kjeldgaard
  14. FWIW, here is a list of players I compiled that need to be protected from Rule 5 draft (P50 #'s in parenthesis). Of this list, only Cody, Butler (if healthy), Katin, and Heether are players that I think may be called up in September. Still, it is unlikely as 40 man spots would need to be cleared. Zack Braddock (#7) - AA Taylor Green (#8) - AA Lorenzo Cain (#9) - AA Chris Cody (#19) - AAA Josh Butler (#23) - AA Amaury Rivas (#33) - A+ Brendan Katin (#43) - AAA Mike Jones - AA Adam Heether - AAA Mike McClendon - AA Nick Green - AA The rest: AAA: Joe Koshansky, Sam Narron AA: Chuck Caufield, Robert Hinton, Josh Wahpepah, Dave Welch, Bo Wright A+: Chris Errecart, Mike Ramlow A-:Brock Kjeldgaard
  15. I've been trying to come up with my own top ten list and it has been quite difficult. After Escobar and Lawrie, the next dozen or so players could be shuffled up and put randomly in any order. I just don't see anyone stand out. Not sure if that is good news or bad. Is it because we have so many good players or because we have many good players with significant holes in their game?
  16. ... as well as Peralta and Meadows are worthy of a promotion. Luetge could move back into Brevard's rotation also. I'm having a hard time understanding why Anundsen and Rivas have not been bumped up to AA yet.
  17. My, the bar is set low... If he can just keep his ERA under 7, I'll be happy! Sorry, I couldn't resist.
  18. I believe the 40 man roster is full. Any idea who will be dropped to clear a spot for Vargas? Corporan, Green, Wright, Swindle, Aguilar?
  19. Whether there is a loophole here or not, I don't think it matters. The Brewers would not do it. It would be a PR disaster and I'm Selig would pressure the Brewers to change their mind. Also, Jeffress would not learn anything from this and would likely continue. The Brewers are not going to look for a way to let him go unpunished.
  20. Wow! Any guesses on how far Jeffress will fall on the next P50? I'm guessing he'll drop at least 20 slots. When is the next P50 coming out?
  21. After a few more draftees sign to backfill the lower levels, I'm hoping to see some more promotions. AA could see a huge influx of pitching talent. Periard will soon finish his rehab in Appleton and Anundsen, Rivas, and Rogers are all deserving of a promotion. To make room for them at AA, Butler and Hand could move to AAA. Its exciting to see our pitching prospects succeed.
  22. What about Rottino? I thought he was going to be the utility guy.
  23. Agreed on Rogers. They would look real stupid losing him when they had 4 or more roster spots still open.
  24. I'll resurrect this thread. The Brewers have less than a week (Nov 20th) to finalize their 40 man roster. If they do not sign any free agents or trade for anyone by then, they will have ten spots available. That is an incredible amount of roster space (which really explains the McGehee claim). I think they will protect Cain, Periard, and Aguilar for sure. After that Rivas, Welch, and Bateman are likely candidates. That still leaves four open spots. The way things are, they may select someone in the draft.
  25. The good news is that the Brewers play again tomorrow! The bad news is that the Brewers play again tomorrow. I don't think I can take another 9th inning like that again.
