  1. Agreed 100% with this. Oden/Durant are 1A and 1B.
  2. As an art history major, I'll chime in. Its considered art because not only is is a poorly drawn wiener dog, but if you take off your glasses and look at it upside down, it very slightly resembles a poorly drawn picture of London Bridge. (I'm not really an art history major.)
  3. What do May flowers bring? Pilgrams!
  4. Weathers is durable and knows how to get outs so, I don't see any issue adding him to the pen. Last season, Weathers' K rate was down and his BB rate was up. He kept a respectable OBP because his BABIP was .237. If he had his career average BABIP last season, he would have allowed 18 more hits and it would have raised his WHIP from 1.29 to a bad 1.53. So I'm somewhat hesitant to expect him to "save" our pen.
  5. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d175/sbrylski06/LP.jpg Here is a graph of relative importance of OBP and SLG by linup position. I have some concerns with the accuracy of the study this is based off, but it's decently close and shows about how it varies. You can see how the 3rd spot is less important than the 2nd and 4th, and also how important OBP is at the top of the order.
  6. This is the paragraph I'm most impressed with. We may have some very knowledgable people on this board, but we also have quite a few emotional ones. Its a long season guys, relax a bit. Glad to have someone new on the forums that can help keep some people from jumping off bridges. Sometimes I stop visiting when all the doom posts start coming in.
  7. I think that OBP is more correlated with scoring runs than SLG... About 1.8 times as important. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Welcome aboard, you'll fit in. Our board is different in the fact that "stat-heads" are the most vocal group!
  8. I think I can wait a two and a half weeks.
  9. WPA. Its a state-dependant stat that defines "clutchiness" very well.
  10. Like it or not he could be the teams best chip at the trading deadline. I'd much rather see Zach Jack go, though I'm not exactly sure how much value he'd have. Jackson + Mench for Weathers/Other reliever? EDIT: I'm not the biggest fan of Weathers though, he's not what he once was.
  11. Does anyone else's eyes get totally stuck on Craig Counsell when they look at the lineups? Its like one of those things where they list items and you have to pick the one that doesn't belong.
  12. I'd trade my entire Brewers bobble head collection for it ... Isn't that a large collection?
  13. Yes, one bad outing where he was in too long means he stinks. No, no. Don't get me wrong, I'm a patient guy and obviously wouldn't make a decision on one game. There were reasons for skeptism coming into the year, those reasons still exist. When Turnbow is off, he's way off. Hopefully this last game is just a blip in his game log, but its asking for trouble to rely on a guy that could become worthless overnight. Even when he's "on" he doesn't really look "on". Losing a set-up guy without a decent replacement can spell just as much disaster for the team as losing someone like Fielder.
  14. After tonight, I remember why we were skeptical or relying on Turnbow coming in to the season. Let's go get another 8th inning guy.
  15. Lets see how the team bounces back...
  16. Through perusing this site and other, my impression is that, in general, pitchers control walks, strikeouts and home runs and the likelihood of a batted ball in play resulting in a hit is pretty uniform and not controlled by the pitcher--thus the primacy of WHIP as a tool for evaluating effectiveness without luck clouding the picture. From studies I have read, the batter is about 2/3rd responsible for the outcome of a plate appearance (mainly K or BB). And for smaller samples, WHIP isn't the greatest stat because BABIP noise shows up rather prominently. K/BB ratio would work better, or K/9 and BB/9. This is why FIP and xFIP are such great stats. They calculate a pitchers expected ERA based on just Ks, BBs, and HR. It takes out all the luck of BABIP and percentage of runners left on base. It would seem like these high strikeout high BA players buck the uniform BABIP idea. I'm guessing my logic is probably messed up somewhere in there. If anyone could tell me where I strayed I would appreciate it. Its important to note that each type of hit (GB, LD, FB) have different likelyhood's of landing for a hit. A batter does have control over his GB/LD/FB ratios. To calculate a batters expected BABIP, an easy formula is LD% + .120. For example, Joe Mauer has maintained about a 24% LD rate over the past two years and an expected BABIP of close to .360. That, coupled with a lower K rate and a lot of balls in play, leads to his execellent batting average. Ryan Howard struck out 181 times last season, yet held a .313 batting average for two reasons. He had a very respectable LD% of 22%, and led the league in FB/HR ratio by 10%. FB result in outs most often of the three hit types, but they can't be caught when they land in the seats. For pitchers its different. Because a batter has more influence on the outcome of a plate appearance, pitchers tend to have very similar expected BABIP. Does that help, or did I miss the point of the question?

  18. I wouldn't see Hunter as much of an upgrade over what we already have. Unless we are sending Mench their way... Mench + Capellan/Jackson/Gwynn/ect. for Hunter + Anthony Swarzak Hmm. I'm not seeing it work.
  19. They seem pretty nice over there, not like those Dodger buffons. I might spend tomorrows game over there, if they'll let me.
  20. A lot of people talk about how the brewers need a right fielder... Who, Chicago sportwriters?
  21. how is this possible? or are you neglecting to put the 10th inning on here? Bill Hall makes it rain when he wants it to rain.
  22. Apparently Lyle-O's are pretty rare. I have never heard of them either.
  23. Sheets - 8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB Cordero - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 0 BB, BS, W Bill Hall wins it one day early.
  24. Oof. Download went smoothly, but it is really quiet on my phone. Anyone know a way to correct that?
