  1. both matt albers and joakim soria expected to be activated later this week, perhaps as soon as friday. assuming that spots are made by optioning teammates to colorado springs, those players could spend the requisite 10 days optioned through the end of colorado springs' regular season, and then be recalled in september. currently a seven man bullpen. candidates for optioning are: orlando arcia keon broxton corbin burnes (who would not burn his third option if promptly recalled) josh hader (not happening) corey knebel (who would not burn his final option if promptly recalled) jonathan schoop (may have enough service time to refuse the assignment) taylor williams (who would not burn his second option if promptly recalled) you also have to factor in the potential return of zach davies, whom i'm expecting the club to option after his rehab start today for biloxi. like the aforementioned players, davies would not burn his second option if promptly recalled in september.
  2. then again, if both matt albers and joakim soria are to be activated later this week, broxton's spot on the roster may be in jeopardy.
  3. i'm puzzled why they're not considering a couple minor league rehab appearances for albers.
  4. look for matt albers to be activated in the coming days . . .
  5. manny pina is in tonight's starting lineup.
  6. postseason aside, an organization can't raid all of its players right away (the minor league regular season ends 3 september). the biloxi shuckers are in the playoffs, having won their division in the first half, so they're committed to playing games through at least 7 september, so it's not like they can come in as replacements for colorado springs.
  7. should have an update on nottingham in a couple days, if not sooner.
  8. two home runs yesterday for santana (his 6th and 7th). he's up to .287 / .414 / .487.
  9. in having an off day this week and the next, coupled with day-to-day injuries to ryan braun, manny pina and eric thames, it appears that the club seems willing to go with a seven-man bullpen and afford keon broxton a spot on this roster. i'd be surprised if they optioned him again this month.
  10. still 1.0 back in second place, and they have eight games remaining against the team they're chasing (oklahoma city), including four to close out the season.
  11. looks like the brewers dodged a bullet. doesn't appear that pina will go on the disabled list.
  12. no team claimed asher when the brewers attempted to outright him to the minor leagues. because he was outrighted by the club earlier this season, asher reserves the right to refuse this minor league assignment and become a free agent.
  13. has there been any update on manny pina's left shoulder?
  14. the brewers have two healthy utility infielders on the 40-man in tyler saladino and nate orf. the club could justify outrighting one of the two. ariel hernandez and jake thompson are the only two bullpen candidates that can be recalled in the near-term (jacob barnes, adrian houser, and aaron wilkerson all have to stay optioned for at least 10 days unless replacing a player put on the disabled list). removing one of them means there's only one "bullpen shuttle" candidate available in the near-term. the brewers could recall the injured mauricio dubon and place him on the 60-day disabled list to open up a spot. dubon would earn major league pay and the service time clock would start ticking. ditto with jacob nottingham, but it's projected that he could be recovered by september, so putting him on the 60-day dl would prevent the club from using him the rest of the season.
  15. peralta would've been required to stay down for at least 10 days if optioned. the club couldn't afford to have him away for that long, because they likely would have needed him to start on the 9th day after.
  16. they're not skipping peralta. 17: peralta (6) 18: miley (6) 19: chacin (4) 20: anderson (6)
  17. the personnel for the "bullpen shuttle" have certainly changed in recent weeks. brandon woodruff is being held at colorado springs as a starter, so he apparently is no longer a bullpen candidate. were the need arise for the club to option a reliever to get a fresh arm, the obvious candidates at the moment would be corbin burnes or taylor williams, but corey knebel could be a candidate. if knebel were optioned and recalled 1 september, he would not burn his final option. the brewers relievers on the 40-man and number of remaining options (any optioned player must spend at least 10 days down unless replacing a player on the disabled list): matt albers (0; on disabled list) jacob barnes (2; optioned 13 august) corbin burnes (3) josh hader (2) ariel hernandez (2; unclear when he was optioned by the dodgers, but he has spent at least 10 days optioned between both clubs) adrian houser (1; optioned 11 august) dan jennings (0) jeremy jeffress (0) corey knebel (1) jordan lyles (0) joakim soria (0; on disabled list) jake thompson (2; optioned 2 august by the phillies; he has spent at least 10 days optioned between both clubs) aaron wilkerson (2; optioned 13 august) taylor williams (2) thus, the only relievers who are eligible to be recalled to replace a non-injured player in the coming week or so are hernandez and thompson.
  18. the brewers may be in a precarious situation with manny pina's left shoulder injury. if nottingham isn't healthy, you have to wonder if the club will create space on the 40-man to add jett bandy or christian bethancourt. both have been putting up respectable offensive stats in triple-a. nottingham's right wrist chip fracture should be re-evaluated around 22 august. until then, his wrist will be immobilized. the 40-man is currently full. the brewers could select the contract of either jett bandy or christian bethancourt if pina is placed on the disabled list, but would have to outright that player if pina was activated before 1 september. we'll obviously know a lot more after pina's mri.
  19. the guy whose roster spot thompson took, alec asher, was part of the six-player return from texas when the phillies acquired thompson (plus four others) for cole hamels, jake diekman and cash.
  20. jake thompson acquired from the phillies and optioned to colorado springs. thompson has burned his second option this year, and will enter 2019 spring training with one option remaining. alec asher was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man. if the brewers wish to outright asher to the minor leagues, he has the right to refuse the assignment and become a free agent. the 40-man roster remains at capacity.
  21. keon broxton has been recalled.
  22. if the brewers want to limit freddy peralta's innings, the two off days this week could afford them to move him to the bullpen and reinsert him into the rotation 21 august. forecasted august starts and days of rest in between starts: 12: chase anderson (4) 14: joulys chacin (5) 15: junior guerra (5) 17: wade miley (5) 18: anderson (5) 19: chacin (4) 20: guerra (4) 21: freddy peralta (10 days since last start, hypothetically) 22: miley (4) 24: anderson (5) 25: chacin (5) 26: guerra (5) 28: miley (4) 29: peralta (7; could switch peralta to the 28th to give miley a fifth day of rest)
  23. at least one more rehab assignment start with the sky sox for davies. a minor league rehab assignment lasts up to 30 days, and the player earns major league pay and service time. as mentioned above, the brewers could definitely activate davies after that start, option him to save on payroll and service time, and if recalling him 1 september when rosters can expand, davies would not have spent 20 days optioned, preserving his second option.
  24. only one walk in 6.0 innings last night. that's a good thing, because the braves were putting the ball in play like crazy. he's now at 19 walks in 40.1 innings . . . a much improved ratio.
  25. it'll be a start for biloxi, not colorado springs, on saturday. and it may not be his final minor league rehab (or potentially optioned) appearance.
