    it shouldn't have happened that way, as the game at shea stadium (the last game ever there, mind you) started an hour earlier than the brewers-cubs game. but they had a rain delay, and the brewers finished their game ahead of the mets. all the brewers knew when cc finished that game was that they had at least forced a game 163 at shea.

    the ramifications of today's moves . . . mike zagurski designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade, release or outright zagurski to the minors. if zagurski goes unclaimed, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent. nate orf recalled to replace one of the two players put on the disabled list (take your pick of ryan braun or manny pina). orf would have been required to spend the requisite 10 days optioned to the minors. as of now, he has spent less than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues, so he has not burned his first of three options. corbin burnes has his contract selected. he has three options intact. the roster is at 39 players. indications are that the brewers plan to activate wade miley from the 60-day disabled list later this week, so that open spot could be held open for him.

    four perfect innings from wade miley last night at class aa. he is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list tomorrow.

    back to an eight-man bullpen for at least a day with the recall of jorge lopez and the optioning of nate orf. adrian houser is eligible to be recalled tomorrow if need be.

    all optioned pitchers have been down at least 10 days except for adrian houser and aaron wilkerson. the only way either of those two could be recalled is to replace a player on the disabled list. houser will meet the requisite 10 days after wilkerson's start. with nine games in eight days after wilkerson's start, better to take advantage of the exception allowed in recalling a recently optioned player and keep houser, alec asher, jorge lopez and brandon woodruff available at any time for the colorado springs-milwaukee shuttle. even if wilkerson pitches a gem today, it's likely that he's optioned after the game for a fresh reliever--who is then optioned for either asher or woodruff (possibly houser, or wade miley as others have suggested) to open the series thursday in pittsburgh.
