  1. santana is heating up. 7 for 14 in his last three games, and a three run homer yesterday.
  2. santana will enter his first arbitration year this off-season. he has burned his final minor league option this year, so there's no way the club can send him to the minors next year without trying to outright him.
  3. santana hit his fourth home run for the sky sox tuesday (that's 1 every 30 at-bats). still maintaining that high obp: .292 /.412 / .458
  4. if nottingham isn't healthy, you have to wonder if the club will create space on the 40-man to add jett bandy or christian bethancourt. both have been putting up respectable offensive stats in triple-a. nottingham's right wrist chip fracture should be re-evaluated around 22 august. until then, his wrist will be immobilized.
  5. though i'm hard pressed to recall if the brewers have ever done this, they could recall mauricio dubon (not to report) and place him on the 60-day disabled list in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. dubon would earn major league pay and major league service time, but it would be for a brief period.
  6. quintin berry has an opt-out on 28 august if he's told he won't be placed on the brewers' 40-man roster.
  7. if nottingham isn't healthy, you have to wonder if the club will create space on the 40-man to add jett bandy or christian bethancourt. both have been putting up respectable offensive stats in triple-a.
  8. dontrelle willis and alfredo figaro are really ticked that this was posted in the major league forum.
  9. the sky sox season doesn't end until 3 september. currently in second place, 1.0 back, so there's potential for a postseason run for them.
  10. if they were rule 5 draft eligible coming in to the 2018 offseason, if not protected by their new team by the fall deadline, they could be drafted by another team--including the brewers.
  11. disabled list it is. left hamstring.
  12. the brewers claim ariel hernandez from the dodgers and option him to colorado springs. hernandez has burned his second option this year, and will enter 2019 spring training with one option remaining. the 40-man roster is now at capacity.
  13. 79 pitches last night for the sky sox. if davies gets one more start for the sky sox on 11 august and were to be activated to start, he'd either be pitching on three days' rest against the cubs, or on five days' rest against the cardinals (the club has two off days that week). however, the brewers could look at davies two days after his 11 august rehab start and just decide to option him. if he was recalled on 1 september, davies would spend less than 20 days optioned this year and would not burn his second option. the brewers would have an off day in each of the two august weeks following when davies could be eligible to make his first activated start. assuming that the current starting rotation remains healthy, it's going to boil down to whether or not the brewers wish to option freddy peralta or junior guerra in order to put in davies. if guerra is optioned, he'd burn his final fourth option. with september roster expansion looming, the brewers are in a very advantageous position for roster management.
  14. jordan lyles becomes a brewer via a waiver claim. lyles is out of minor league options, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before. if the brewers wish to send lyles to the minors, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent. a corresponding move will be needed on the 25-man when lyles is activated. the roster stands at 39 players.
  15. off days the next two mondays. if the brewers don't put albers on the disabled list with a legit injury, can they get away with burying him in the bullpen, or will he be dfa'd?
  16. junior guerra did what the brewers desperately needed last night: gave them eight strong innings and kept them in the game. after thursday's night game, the club definitely needed to keep their bullpen fresh. were the need arise for the club to option a reliever to get a fresh arm, the obvious candidates at the moment would be corbin burnes or taylor williams. williams, despite being optioned at the end of spring training, was recalled early in the season and has stayed up ever since. thus, williams hasn't burned his second option yet. burnes has yet to optioned to the minor leagues, so his third option remains intact. as long as either reliever spends less than 20 days optioned in 2018, his option will not be burned. if williams is optioned and spends the requisite 10 days optioned, he moves past 20 days and burns his option. as roster expansion looms in less than a month, i'm sure the brewers are considering these factors. working in the bullpen's favor: five off days over the next 23 games in august--including two in one week. the brewers relievers on the 40-man and number of remaining options: matt albers (0) alec asher (1) jacob barnes (2) corbin burnes (3) josh hader (2) adrian houser (1) dan jennings (0) jeremy jeffress (0) corey knebel (1) joakim soria (0) taylor williams (2) brandon woodruff (2)
  17. It's that "grass is always greener" philosophy. Same thing with the people that want Barnes back up. He was sent down for a reason (general suckiness), and while his numbers are better in AAA in only 6 innings, he still has 5 walks, which is concerning. But at least the Brewers still own his rights. DFA Albers, and him and his cheap contract is gone. Probably to the Cardinals, where he'd immediately put up a sub 2 ERA. with two open roster spots, and no immediate need to add jimmy nelson back to the 40-man roster, there isn't that pressing of a need to remove a player from the 40-man roster. were the 40-man full, matt albers might be tied to a different fate.
  18. there are different types of waivers after 31 july. the only type of waivers that could allow the brewers to send jesus aguilar to the minor leagues would not allow them to pull him back to the 40-man roster if another team showed interest. if another team showed interest, they wouldn't have to give up any talent to obtain aguilar--just a waiver fee--and the brewers would lose aguilar.
  19. jonathan schoop is acquired as jonathan villar ends his tenure on the brewers' 40-man roster. schoop has one more season of arbitration eligibility, and can become a free agent after the 2019 season. the roster remains at 38 players.
  20. quintin berry has an opt-out on 28 august if he's told he won't be placed on the brewers' 40-man roster. it's quite possible that berry plays into the brewers' 2018 outfield plans.
  21. it was obvious that the brewers viewed brett phillips as their #1 guy to replace an injured outfielder. will be interesting now to see who gets the call if any position player goes down with an injury: keon broxton or domingo santana.
  22. joakim soria acquired via trade. brent suter transferred to the 60-day disabled list. the 40-man is at capacity. an opening needs to be made on the 25-man to activate soria.
  23. up to .299 / .429 / .481. however, 12 strikeouts in his last 32 at-bats, but 10 walks over his last 10 games. that's certainly a positive.
