  1. brad miller played his first game for the sky sox last night and played shortstop. he committed two errors.
  2. per this report, tyler saladino is progressing with his recovery from injury but is still weeks away from returning.
  3. the brewers expect dubon to be ready by 2019 spring training.
  4. working against burnes is a full 40-man and not being on said roster. as mentioned elsewhere, alec asher is also being stretched out as a starter, so there are plenty of starting candidates with mlb experience.
  5. working against those guys: --40-man is currently full --a 40-man spot will eventually be needed when jimmy nelson is activated --nick franklin is holding down a spot and can't be outrighted until he clears his injury, or until the club moves him to the 60-day disabled list --tyler saladino is on the disabled list, which likely necessitates keeping both eric sogard and brad miller on the 40-man for depth --keon broxton is still on the 40-man --the brewers are unlikely to recall mauricio dubon just to place him on the 60-day disabled list, as he would accrue major league pay and service time
  6. a fifth starter will be needed 19 june. we know that zach davies won't be activated by then. brandon woodruff will not have met the requisite 10 days down. barring a trade, it's likely we'll see freddy peralta recalled to make at least two starts in the rotation on 19 june in pittsburgh and on 24 june vs. st. louis.
  7. three games in since eric thames has been activated, and it appears that he'll be out of the starting lineup for two of those three (assuming no changes to the today's announced lineup). the one game he started, he played first base.
  8. i forgot about wilkerson being on the 40-man, probably because i was only focusing on experienced guys who have been recalled this season. it's a gamble . . . they might be able to recall a guy who's scheduled to throw a bullpen that day, but then he's likely unavailable for the next day or two. starting friday, the brewers play 10 straight days, so it could be risky if a bullpen arm goes down. i say risky in that there could be logistical challenges in getting a guy from the colorado springs club in time, especially given that four of those next 10 games are day games. fortunately, seven of the 10 are in milwaukee.
  9. because the other recall candidates have been stretched out recently as starters, lopez has benefited as being the sole rested experienced bullpen arm the club can call on. aaron wilkerson (threw 5.1 innings on 8 june) alec asher (threw 7.0 innings on 9 june) brandon woodruff (threw 4.0 innings on 10 june) adrian houser (threw 5.0 innings on 11 june) with freddy peralta also starting (threw 6.0 innings on 10 june), it's kind of risky for the brewers to have so many 40-man guys stretched out as starters if a reliever goes down.
  10. when could this happen? it would save the brewers money. they're paying him a major league salary right now, and he's taking up a 40-man roster spot. apparently, he's been rehabbing in arizona for quite some time, but apparently isn't healthy enough to start a minor league rehab assignment. franklin was placed on the disabled list 9 may, so a move to the 60-day disabled list could be happening.
  11. he was just optioned, so he must stay down for at least 10 days, unless replacing a player put on the disabled list. Does that transfer when you’re traded? Doesn’t seem right. further clarification, an optioned player accrues time spent optioned with his previous organization. for example, when alec asher was acquired via trade with the dodgers on 17 april, he had been optioned 5 april by the dodgers. thus, he already had spent at least 10 days optioned. the brewers optioned him that same day, and would not have been held to a reset clock if the brewers had wished to recall him on let's say, 20 april (just three days later). however, miller wasn't optioned by the rays prior to this trade. as others have pointed out, he was designated for assignment.
  12. he was just optioned, so he must stay down for at least 10 days, unless replacing a player put on the disabled list.
  13. it appears that miller has been optioned for the first time ever in his career.
  14. thames started in left field today and played four innings. hitless in two at-bats, and left the game . . . presumably to catch a flight to milwaukee.
  15. ji-man choi optioned to make room for brandon woodruff. a fifth starter won't be needed again until 19 june, so woodruff's stay could be brief.
  16. three hits (including a three-run homer) for thames in a start at first base last night. likely his final rehab game this afternoon in sacramento.
  17. i'm wondering if the brewers are seriously considering optioning domingo santana to make room for eric thames and starting him in left field when ryan braun is given the day off. i'm predicting ji-man choi optioned for brandon woodruff today; woodruff optioned for thames tomorrow, and freddy peralta (or zach davies) for santana when a fifth starter is needed again 19 june in pittsburgh. i wouldn't expect santana to be optioned for long (less than 20 days to preserve his final option), but given that the brewers have already optioned a struggling orlando arcia, i wouldn't be surprised to see santana sent down to work on his hitting. of course, this means that the back-up outfielders are thames, hernan perez and eric sogard . . .
  18. brandon woodruff will be recalled to start sunday's game.
  19. thames started in left field for the sky sox last night and was lifted after seven innings there. one single in four at-bats.
  20. the brewers could option him for up to 19 days and then recall him for good. in doing so, he would not burn his final option.
  21. in the first of what may be only five days of minor league rehab, eric thames had two hits in four at-bats for colorado springs last night. he played first base, but is expected to see some time in the outfield as well.
  22. it's not ji-man choi's place to demand a trade to another club to get more playing time at the major league level. he just turned 27, and prior to spring training, had burned only two of his options. he hardly has any major league service time. he has burned his final option, and come 2019, if he's on a 40-man roster in spring training, he'll have to make that club's 25-man roster or be exposed to waivers. he was 18 when signed by seattle, so it's not like he's "earned" service time by playing professionally in south korea like eric thames has. he should be grateful to be on a club's 40-man roster, and that he's been optioned long enough this year to burn his final option.
  23. has to be a disabled list move, because choi has not met the minimum 10-day stay in the minors yet.
  24. Nah, they will just be able to get Santana, Braun, and aguilar in the game together. No need to bring up choi to continue to sit one of those 3. Potential rest day for Braun, PH for Arcia in a key spot late in the game...I don't think Choi would start more than 1-2 of those 5 games max, but adding him to the bench for that series adds value in my opinion. We'll see if they do it. choi was optioned 24 may. he has to spend at least 10 days optioned to the minor leagues. if they put davies (or any other player on the disabled list), then it's fair game to recall choi at any point.
  25. a reminder that unless replacing a player put on the disabled list, a player must remain optioned for a minimum of 10 days before he is eligible to be recalled again. alec asher (optioned 13 may and can be recalled at any point) brandon woodruff (optioned 24 may) jorge lopez (optioned 25 may) adrian houser (optioned 27 may) obviously, the brewers have "untouchable" bullpen arms until the first full week of june and beyond. but the brewers have an advantage with only four more games to play before an off day and then five games in american league parks (where a pitcher won't be pulled for a pinch hitter), plus two off days in that first full week of june.
