    four players added to the 40-man roster, protecting them from the upcoming rule 5 draft: mauricio dubon, jacob nottingham, marcos diplan and freddy peralta. all will enter 2018 spring training with three minor league options. the roster is at 39.

    with the addition of jacob nottingham, the brewers now have five catchers on the 40-man roster. i believe this is the most catchers they've carried during an off-season since 2008, when the club had five (eric munson, jason kendall, lou palmisano, mike rivera and vinny rottino). as mentioned above, briefly in september of 2009, the club had five catchers on the 40-man (but only four active with the big league club).

    five open spots on the 40-man. with the rule 5 draft protection deadline monday, it's a little peculiar that we haven't seen more players moved off the 40-man roster. granted, the 2016 brewers had less promise than the 2017 team, so it made sense to outright all of those players. of course, there's still time for the club to open up more roster spots. maybe they're thinking it'll be harder for other teams to try to claim waived players if they're cut on monday, just as teams are adding their own prospects to their rosters.

    with the deadline to add players to the 40-man roster lest they be eligible for the rule 5 draft just days away, and with jacob nottingham rule 5 eligible if he's not added to the 40-man by 7:00 central monday night, i'm surprised that the brewers are still carrying four catchers on their 40-man.

    i'm a resident of minneapolis. prior to that, i lived in st. paul. i have long applauded the brewers for their commitment to an urban spring training facility and to the tax base of a city like phoenix (just as i'm glad the brewers remained in the city of milwaukee and didn't build a suburban stadium). oakland and milwaukee were the only teams that had facilities within the city limits of phoenix. then oakland bailed and went to suburban mesa. i am very pleased with the brewers' renewed commitment to an urban municipality and am especially proud of the club's commitment to the youth in the city of phoenix. also, having developed a strong sense of pride in the defined-borders, named neighborhood that i live in, i have always been pleased that the brewers have identified by name the neighborhood that they are part of. phoenix is huge. maryvale tells locals (and savvy tourists) exactly where it is. raise your hand if you thought that maryvale was a suburb of phoenix. i've seen plenty of online comments showing such misunderstandings.

    25 blown saves in 2017. not every blown save turned into a loss, but the majority did. that's an average of one blown save every 6-7 games.

    regarding the 2018 bullpen, i'm wondering if the brewers will spend the bulk of the season with an extra arm. the brewers have been playing short a position player for quite some time under craig counsell (part of that is afforded by their defensive versatility). the brewers have only three off days through their first 30 games, so there's a strong chance of an eight-man bullpen to start the season.

    is it telling that taylor jungmann wasn't outrighted to the minor leagues when carlos torres and quintin berry were, and that the brewers are considering him as a possibility for the 2018 starting rotation? by this time last year, the brewers (in offseason transactions) had already outrighted garin cecchini, jake elmore, sean nolin and andy wilkins. by 7 november last year, the brewers also outrighted yhonathan barrios, josmil pinto and ben rowen. i'm not suggesting that the brewers exercise wily peralta-esque patience with jungmann, but given his minor league performance in 2017 (plus based on that he made the club out of spring training before being optioned), one has to think with jimmy nelson out, jungmann is back in the mix for the 2018 starting rotation.

    those three players declared free agency today. the roster is at 35.

    i'd add that in late march 2018 near the end of spring training, any player in big league camp as a non-roster invitee who spent all of 2017 on a major league roster and/or major league disabled list has to be added to the club's 40-man roster and optioned (if possible) or added to the 40-man roster and subsequent opening day roster. if not, that player can opt out of his contract and sign with any team as a free agent. this is a protection given to players with major league experience who sign a minor league deal with a club. also, not sure of the required date, but at some point (and i'm pretty sure it's after players declare free agency and are removed from the 40-man), clubs have to activate all players on the 7-day, 10-day and 60-day disabled lists. in the case of the 60-day disabled list activation, that player needs to be returned to the 40-man roster or outrighted/released. the brewers don't have anybody on the 60-day disabled list to activate, so there's no roster manipulation concerns here.

    for all of those clamoring for jacob nottingham to be added to the 40-man roster, bear in mind that doing so would leave them with five catchers on the 40-man roster--three of them out of options. however, it's doubtful that the brewers would add nottingham without cutting one of the four current catchers on the roster first. the deadline to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible players is after the rule 5 draft protection deadline, so if they're thinking of non-tendering stephen vogt, they better do it ahead of time (like they did with carlos torres).

    good news . . . one of your four locks was added to the 40-man in september and pitched one hell of a game on the final day of the season.

    carlos torres and quintin berry both outrighted off the 40-man roster. the roster is at 38, still pending three players eligible to declare free agency: matt garza, anthony swarzak and neil walker.

    i like this move because it shows other fringe players with major league experience that it's worth striking a minor league deal with an invite to big league camp. blaine boyer, chris capuano, jake elmore, paolo espino, will middlebrooks, hernan perez, manny pina, josmil pinto and alex presley, along with eric sogard, took gambles accepting minor league deals with the promise of a look in recent spring camps and made their way to the big league roster. of course, not all panned out, but if you're able to harvest perez, pina and sogard from the scrap heap in two seasons, i say it's worthwhile demonstrating to other fringe players that it's worth taking the minor league deal. it's expected that a 40-man spot will open up in 2018 by placing jimmy nelson on the 60-day disabled list, so any free agent accepting a minor league deal knows that spot could become his.

    with this move, the brewers have just three players under contract for 2018 and beyond: chase anderson, ryan braun and eric thames. everybody else is either arbitration-eligible or pre-arbitration.

    paolo espino was traded to texas for cash in august, after being designated for assignment. aaron brooks took his spot on the 40-man and was later outrighted off the 40-man.

    i would figure that any club gunning for a division title would be more aggressive with deadline deals . . . which may mean surrendering more top prospects. based on that, i like getting two wild card appearances and likely not cashing in the farm system for rental players.

    as a sign of good faith to the player, the club could give someone like sogard a minor league salary equal to his major league salary. it'd be obvious by that point that the club has every intention of adding sogard to the 40-man (and 25-man) after placing nelson on the 60-day disabled list, because they wouldn't pay him all that money to play in the minors.

    fielder is not retiring. if he were retiring, he'd forfeit what's guaranteed to him through 2020. he is part of the texas rangers organization, and is being paid by texas (and the amount pledged by detroit when they traded him). fielder has not been designated for assignment, nor has he been released. he remains on the 60-day disabled list, and will until the season ends. at that point, texas can release him or trade him (likely forfeiting any insurance money), or they can add him back to their 40-man roster (which keeps him in the texas organization). come spring training 2017, fielder is a near-guarantee to be put back onto the 60-day disabled list, then back on the 40-man throughout the 2017-2018 offseason. keep repeating this until 2020, when his contract expires. unless the rangers are super desperate for a 40-man roster spot in any of the next four offseasons, i can't see them cutting ties with fielder. so, if you are hopeful that the brewers sign fielder, look for that to happen no earlier than 2021. the texas rangers settled with their insurance company, allowing them flexibility to remove prince fielder from their 40-man roster in the offseason. they exercised that right by releasing fielder today. obviously, his 40-man spot can now go to any prospect or free agent, so this is advantageous to the rangers as they plan their 2018 roster.

    the brewers have four players that can declare free agency after the world series wraps up (matt garza, eric sogard, anthony swarzak and neil walker) to open up four spots for brewers prospects. it is possible for the brewers to resign one of those free agents to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league camp with the understanding that he'll be added back to the 40-man (and 25-man) roster after jimmy nelson is placed on the 60-day disabled list.
