  2. friday: brandon woodruff saturday: zach davies sunday: jimmy nelson monday: brent suter tuesday: matt garza it should be noted that if brandon woodruff keeps a spot in the rotation for four starts, it can pretty much be guaranteed that he won't burn his option in 2017. but given what they're hoping for with chase anderson, and two off days the week of 13 august, he might not even need to make that many.
  3. peralta and nieuwenhuis both outrighted to the minor leagues.
  4. puzzled as to why davies isn't pitching friday on four days' rest, keeping the saturday slot in line with taylor jungmann. if woodruff completely falters, jungmann can step in five days later. i know that woodruff hasn't pitched since saturday to jungmann's monday, but still . . .
  5. technically, zach davies is taking guerra's next turn in the rotation, on five days' rest. davies confirmed for saturday, nelson confirmed for sunday. tba on friday, which would only be three days' rest for jungmann. speculation is brandon woodruff, who last pitched saturday.
  6. eric thames leading off today . . . very unusual move. i'd either go with orlando arcia or domingo santana for the time being.
  7. garza officially activated to start today's game.
  8. examining the bullpen now, after sending down wei-chung wang, with number of minor league options remaining. the club has lost a great degree of flexibility in having players that can be optioned. jacob barnes (2) oliver drake (0) josh hader (2, already burned his 2017 option) jared hughes (0) jeremy jeffress (0) corey knebel (1) anthony swarzak (0) carlos torres (0) already optioned, but can be recalled at any point during the season (requires a 10-day minimum stay in the minors unless replacing an injured player): michael blazek (1, will burn his final option in a matter of days unless recalled to replace an injured player) paolo espino (2, already burned his 2017 option) taylor jungmann (1, already burned his 2017 option; has been stretched out as a starter) jorge lopez (1, already burned his 2017 option) wei-chung wang (2, will burn his second option if he spends more than 20 days optioned) tyler webb (3, will burn his 2017 option in a matter of days unless recalled) all other optioned pitchers on the 40-man are either starters or recovering from an injury.
  9. wei-chung wang optioned to make room for garza. lewis brinson survives a roster cut. if wang stays optioned for more than 20 days, he will burn his second option. considering how close we are to september roster expansion, it seems to be a waste of an option if wang isn't recalled again before september rolls around.
  10. appears that garza will be activated tomorrow.
  11. you must be pleased that he was optioned before team photo day.
  12. sent on rehab assignment 15 july. could've kept him on the rehab assignment for 30 days, but he would have earned major league pay and service time for that entire duration. they activated him from the disabled list and optioned him on 24 july. he's now earning the minor league portion of his pay, but the clock is ticking on burning his first option if he stays optioned beyond 20 days.
  13. brinson possibly sent down when garza activated; if he survives that cut, not sure how he'd stick when a starting pitcher will need to be recalled saturday. advantage to brinson sticking around through friday: the dh spot.
  14. the colorado springs sky sox are in first place, 6.5 games up on the oklahoma city dodgers. their final regular season game is 4 september. if in first place by then, they would play a five-game postseason series, and if advancing from that, would have another five-game series. that's obviously going to affect september roster expansion . . . certainly can't expect the brewers to raid the sky sox roster. but, also have to consider the 2017 minor league service time of optioned and potentially optioned players--michael blazek, keon broxton, wei-chung wang, tyler webb and brandon woodruff--because if any of them spend more than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues, they would burn an option. when a player is optioned to the minor leagues, he must stay optioned for at least 10 days--unless being recalled to replace a player going on the disabled list, paternity list, bereavement list, or as the 26th man of a doubleheader. august is obviously a key time to consider the makeup of the 25-man roster--for example, wang could be optioned later in august and recalled on 1 september and not burn his option. if blazek isn't recalled by the early next week and stays up for good, he burns his final option. if broxton is optioned again in 2017, stays one day past the minimum or isn't recalled for an injured player, he too will burn his final option. wang has not been optioned in 2017. if he spends less than 20 days optioned in 2017, he enters 2018 spring training with two options. if webb isn't recalled later this week and kept up for good, he will burn his option and enter 2018 spring training with two options. woodruff was optioned 24 july. as mentioned above, he must spend at least 10 days optioned on this stint before being eligible for recall. if he spends less than 20 days optioned in 2017, he enters 2018 spring training with three options. i'm not suggesting that the brewers should ensure that all of these players don't burn their options this year . . . just advising what could happen as the club moves forward in august.
  15. this will change when garza is activated thursday and when a starting pitcher is named for saturday, but for at least one game today, the brewers will carry a 9-man bullpen and a 5-man unit of non-starting position players. the brewers could not be in this position without monday's off day. having a roof has really helped the brewers keep their off days this season, plus, they've been fortunate to have only two road games rescheduled.
  16. apparently the brewers feel confident with the availability of their bullpen and in matt garza's ability to go relatively deep on thursday, having optioned paolo espino last night. recalled on 28 july, espino hadn't pitched for the brewers since, and would've been an ideal candidate for long relief in case garza falters thursday.
  17. paolo espino optioned to make room on the 25-man for jeffress. espino was recalled 28 july after michael blazek and wily peralta gave up those crooked numbers in washington. espino was never used during this recall, and was an obvious candidate for optioning with matt garza set to return to the rotation this week. it just happened under slightly different circumstances and timing.
  18. assuming that garza's slot on thursday is not the next tba, saturday's starter (essentially junior guerra's spot) is undetermined. brandon woodruff threw 5.0 innings on saturday.
  19. garza did indeed throw a bullpen yesterday. the club is looking to activate him thursday, not wednesday.
  20. brett phillips is eligible to be recalled for the final of those three dh games.
  21. 1 august: jimmy nelson 2 august: brent suter 3 august: hopefully matt garza 4 august: zach davies 5 august: tbd, but in line with four days' rest for taylor jungmann
  22. let's wait until tomorrow. jeffress isn't expected to be activated today.
  23. broxton to get bulk of playing time for the foreseeable future.
  24. technically, keon broxton recalled before jeremy jeffress activated. another roster move is likely today.
  25. broxton got hot with colorado springs. and in 30 at-bats against the cardinals this year, he owns a 1.388 ops. when he came back from the minors for good last year, he was killing the ball. give keon three weeks or so. if he struggles, option him down for 10 more days and then recall him in september. he has higher trade value with one minor league option remaining.
