  1. phillips won't be eligible for recall yet, but keon broxton will. i'm predicting dfa-ing nieuwenhuis and carlos torres, and recalling broxton and activating jeffress. if jeffress isn't able to report to milwaukee by tuesday night, the brewers can hold off on activating him. thus, there would be an opening on the 25-man roster that could allow the brewers to recall keon broxton, and then make a roster move after tuesday's game to activate jeffress. jeffress should be activated before tonight's game. at present, he would take the roster spot vacated by kirk nieuwenhuis. any other transactions would require a 25-man roster move.
  2. keon broxton will not burn his final option if he spends less than 20 days optioned to the minors this year. he just met the minimum 10-day stay, so a recall today would allow the brewers to option him once more before september roster expansion and not burn that final option. phillips and brinson have both burned their first option, so the brewers can afford to be liberal in shuttling them back and forth.
  3. broxton makes sense as outlined above. jungmann threw 85 pitches monday night's game (54 for strikes), and could still pitch saturday on four days' rest. woodruff could be on hand not to be activated right away, but waiting in the wings in case garza isn't ready and they need to activate him wednesday. plus, he arrives in milwaukee early to help recover from any possible jet lag from las vegas.
  4. i want to predict where the apostrophe will be in september's thread title.
  5. keon broxton has not appeared in tonight's game in las vegas (currently through five innings).
  6. besides, americans are getting used to just 10 days of service.
  7. the reasoning is to work with the required 10-day minimum stay--lest you have to call up the likes of kirk nieuwenhuis again. broxton meets it today (plus, if he spends less than 20 days optioned, he doesn't burn his final option). phillips will meet his 10-day minimum stay next weekend. since both brinson and phillips have already burned their 2017 options, the musical chairs should continue throughout august--especially if you can keep broxton optioned for less than 20 days. come september, all three outfielders can be up. espino could very well be sent out wednesday for garza instead of brinson--it would give the club an extra bat against st. louis and greater flexibility with the dh on friday. the club could then option brinson after friday's game and recall a pitcher for just one game, recalling phillips after optioning saturday's starter.
  8. if i'm david stearns, this is what i'd do: recall keon broxton for tuesday's game. when it's time to activate jeremy jeffress, designate carlos torres for assignment. activate matt garza on wednesday. option lewis brinson, keeping paolo espino available as the long man in case garza falters. recall taylor jungmann or brandon woodruff on saturday (i'd be inclined towards jungmann). option espino. option jungmann after the game saturday and recall brett phillips for sunday (the earliest he's available for recall) to take advantage of the dh for ryan braun the next three games. option phillips or broxton when the turn taken by jungmann comes up again, and recall brandon woodruff.
  9. garza threw a bullpen session saturday and was scheduled to throw one today. hoping it's good news for him to return to the rotation.
  10. assuming no other transactions before tuesday's game, and assuming jeremy jeffress is activated before said game, the brewers appear to have a 10-man bullpen and a 4-man bench. granted, one of those pitchers could be held in reserve in case matt garza can't be activated wednesday, but still . . .
  11. if the brewers outright nieuwenhuis again, he'll go back to earning the pro-rated $257,000--which is very high for a minor leaguer not on the 40-man roster. if he refuses the assignment, which is within his right, he loses the rest of his contract.
  12. phillips won't be eligible for recall yet, but keon broxton will. i'm predicting dfa-ing nieuwenhuis and carlos torres, and recalling broxton and activating jeffress. if jeffress isn't able to report to milwaukee by tuesday night, the brewers can hold off on activating him. thus, there would be an opening on the 25-man roster that could allow the brewers to recall keon broxton, and then make a roster move after tuesday's game to activate jeffress.
  13. jeremy jeffress acquired via a trade for a minor league player. kirk nieuwenhuis designated for assignment. jeffress is out of minor league options, and is under team control through 2019. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or outright nieuwenhuis to the minor leagues. keon broxton is eligible for recall from colorado springs if the brewers aren't able to activate jeffress by tomorrow night's game. jeffress is in texas today, so it will be more convenient for him to pack up his belongings. the 40-man roster remains full.
  14. bumping so fans might better understand why texas felt a change of scenery might be good for jeffress, and how a familiar support network could be good for him.
  15. having been outrighted to the minor leagues before, jeffress would have the right to refuse the minor league assignment.
  16. phillips won't be eligible for recall yet, but keon broxton will. i'm predicting dfa-ing nieuwenhuis and carlos torres, and recalling broxton and activating jeffress.
  17. that would also open a needed spot on the 40-man for jeffress.
  18. i'm optimistic because things are lining up quite conveniently for the brewers for roster management for this season and beyond. fingers crossed for matt garza to return this week. positive indications thus far for an earlier return for chase anderson. convenient timing of optioning and recalling of players who may not even burn their option this year if they keep their optioned stay under 20 days: keon broxton, junior guerra, wei-chung wang, brandon woodruff. players who could make a real impact and be post-season eligible are doing well in the minors: ivan de jesus jr., mauricio dubon, taylor jungmann, freddy peralta, aaron wilkerson and kyle wren. september roster expansion is looming. the brewers will be able to use up to 40 players over seven games against the cubs.
  19. get racine's daily newspaper to shift its cubs-centric focus to content on the brewers. it's a wisconsin newspaper, distributed in a county that helps fund miller park.
  20. broxton, who is raking at aaa, is eligible to be recalled for tuesday's game. if recalled today, it would be a 10-day stint optioned, which would still allow the brewers to option him again for 10 days in 2017 and not burn his final option.
  21. keon broxton. .ops of 1.077 over seven games with colorado springs. small sample size, i know . . . but his bat got hot in his first game, and he's proven that his hot streaks can carry a team for a week or two. gotta bury the cardinals this week, and keon can help the team do that.
  22. don't have to worry about it for a while with monday's off day, assuming matt garza is able to return from the disabled list and pitch wednesday. today: zach davies tuesday: jimmy nelson wednesday: matt garza thursday: brent suter on five days' rest friday: davies on four days' rest in case garza can't be activated? taylor jungmann can be recalled at any point. brandon woodruff could be recalled wednesday, having just met the 10-day minimum stay required in the rotation. paolo espino stays as a long reliever through at least tuesday, giving josh hader some much-needed rest.
  23. retroactive to 23 july. with the new 10-day disabled list, can only backdate three days. with jimmy nelson scheduled to throw tuesday, garza would be eligible to be activated wednesday to pitch against the cardinals. here's hoping that he will be healthy enough to return and throw at least six innings.
  24. wei-chung wang has his contract selected. junior guerra optioned to colorado springs. guerra has one minor league option remaining, but if he spends less than 20 days optioned, it won't be burned. wang has two minor league options remaining, but likewise, if he spends less than 20 days optioned from this day forward, it won't be burned. with september roster expansion looming, the brewers could very well find a way to not burn either player's option. the 40-man roster is full.
