  1. he has been outrighted before, so if the brewers wish to outright him to the minors in 2017, he does have the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent.
  2. when i first saw that, i read liability instead of ability, and it made sense.
  3. when a free agent spends the entire previous season on the 25-man roster and/or major league disabled list and signs a minor league deal the following season, the signing club is required to add an opt-out clause to the player's contract that kicks in just before spring training ends. thus, the brewers weren't required to add an opt-out clause, but chamberlain certainly could have negotiated for one or more.
  4. yes, indeed. neftali feliz signs a one year deal to fill the 40-man roster. feliz has two minor league options remaining, but due to his accrued service time, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment. he has been outrighted off the 40-man roster before, so if the brewers wish to outright him to the minor leagues, he could also refuse that assignment.
  5. blake parker has been claimed by the angels. the roster is at 39.
  6. infielder eric sogard has signed a minor league deal with the brewers and will be in big league camp as a non-roster invitee. sogard has one minor league option remaining, so if the brewers select his contract to add him to the 25-man roster, he can later be optioned to the minor leagues in 2017.
  7. lhp andy oliver has signed a minor league deal with the brewers and has been invited to major league spring training as a non-roster invitee. oliver is out of minor league options, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before. if the brewers select his contract to add him to the 25-man roster in the 2017 season, but later wish to assign him to the minor leagues, he'd have to clear waivers and choose to accept the minor league assignment.
  8. hiram burgos has elected to resign with the milwaukee brewers. he signed a minor league deal, but will report to major league spring training as a non-roster invitee. if burgos has his contract selected and is added to the 25-man roster, he can be optioned as he has one minor league option remaining.
  9. Except it's not guaranteed. It's like a reverse minor league contract w/spring invite. It's a major league contract that gives the Brewers the right to dis-invite him. i'm trying to remember the last time a brewer on a non-guaranteed contract was released from the 40-man roster before opening day. has there been anyone since first baseman juan francisco was released from his non-guaranteed contract in 2014 spring training?
  10. with today's signing of tommy milone, the 40-man roster is full. milone will enter 2017 spring training with no minor league options remaining. if the brewers wish to outright him to the minor leagues, he has the right to refuse the assignment and become a free agent.
  11. yes. all of the other general managers have as their ringtone for stearns.
  12. with today's trade for jett bandy, the roster stays at 39. bandy will enter 2017 spring training with one minor league option remaining. three catchers remain on the 40-man roster. andrew susac has at least one minor league option remaining (believed to be two). manny pina is out of minor league options.
  13. jett bandy has one minor league option remaining.
  14. it's official. ok to keep this thread in the major league forum.
  15. alfredo figaro and dontrelle willis are quite jealous that webb gets a thread in the major league forum.
  16. de jesus jr. is out of minor league options. if his contract is selected by the brewers, he has the right to declare free agency if the brewers wish to outright him to the minors.
  17. one of the two players to be named later in the 12 july 2011 trade that first brought francisco rodriguez to the brewers was daniel ray herrera. he was on the 40-man roster at the time of the trade on 1 september 2011.
  18. unless i've missed a transaction, the last time the brewers took a player in the major league phase of the rule 5 draft and traded him that same day was in 2006, when they took lhp edward campusano and traded him to detroit for cash.
  19. the brewers have traded rule 5 pick to the chicago cubs for a player to be named or cash. the roster is back at 39.
  20. there is not a 25-man roster until just before opening day. at this point, there is only a 40-man roster, which smith is part of.
  21. with the rule 5 draft acquisition of caleb smith from the new york yankees, the 40-man roster is full. smith cost the brewers $100,000, and he must remain on the brewers' 25-man roster for all of 2017 in order to remain on the brewers' 40-man roster (with minor league options) in 2018 and beyond. if the brewers cannot keep smith on their 25-man roster, he must be waived, go unclaimed by 29 other teams (who also must abide by the same 25-man roster inclusion rule for 2017 if opting to claim him), and be offered back to the yankees for $50,000.
  22. wei-chung wang is jealous that smith gets his own thread in the major league forum to discuss the transaction.
  23. geltz had the right to declare free agency and did so today.
  24. last year, pina was acquired the same day as the rule 5 draft--but after the rule 5 draft had concluded. thus, we could know as early as thursday late morning. but it may take as long as six months before we know if the return is cash or another player.
  25. last year, pina was acquired the same day as the rule 5 draft--but after the rule 5 draft had concluded. thus, we could know as early as thursday late morning.
