    middlebrooks is set to begin a rehab assignment. i doubt that his rehab assignment will last until 1 september, when rosters can expand. thus, someone has to go. the sky sox season ends 5 september. keon broxton and orlando arcia are the only two position players that can be optioned. barring an injury to another player or designating another player for assignment, one of broxton or arcia will likely be optioned. that player has to spend 10 days in the minors before he can be recalled. there's been plenty of talk on this forum about service time for both arcia and broxton. this may be a convenient move for the brewers and their interests in team control.

    the brewers have fewer home games remaining than road games. on road games, you're assured at-bats in the 9th inning. one way that the club can avoid setting a new record is to win more at home.

    ramon flores has been designated for assignment to open up a roster spot for brent suter. the roster remains full.

    i was close. damien magnifico optioned, santana activated and flores designated for assignment. if the brewers wish to outright flores to the minor leagues, he cannot refuse the assignment.

    Theyll probably put Houser on the 60. No need to DFA anyone. granted it was under doug melvin, but in 2014, the brewers could've recalled johnny hellweg and put him on the 60-day disabled list but never did. when a player optioned to the minor leagues is recalled just to be put on the 60-day disabled list, it essentially doubles the cost of bringing up a guy making his mlb debut like suter, because the club has to pay both players a major league salary, and as noted, they both accrue service time.

    i'm predicting rob scahill optioned, domingo santana activated, and one of ramon flores or kirk nieuwenhuis designated for assigment to make room on the 40-man and 25-man roster for suter.

    the brewers announced that they are selecting the contract of brent suter to pitch tomorrow. someone will have to be removed from the 40-man to accommodate this move. if the brewers opt to option suter after his start, they can recall him in early september and not burn his minor league option.

    the club is back to an eight-man bullpen.

    it should be noted that clubs likely look at roster capacity and makeup of other teams right up until the deadline to protect players from the rule 5 draft. in november 2015, the brewers added only three players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the rule 5 draft. many more were added in september. thus, other teams had more time to better assess the makeup of brewers' roster and possibly anticipate what player(s) the brewers may draft from their organization.

    wilkins optioned today. sounds like braun is day-to-day, and the club has ramon flores, kirk nieuwenhuis, hernan perez and jake elmore to cover the outfield corners for the time being with keon broxton presumably covering center field.

    with ryan braun's knee injury, one has to wonder if the club will cut domingo santana's rehab assignment short and activate him for today's game. andy wilkins has logged in some innings at aaa in the outfield corners, so that may factor into the club's decision to keep santana on rehab.

    i stand corrected. there's a reason why present day media guides are so much thicker . . . the content's clarity is vastly improved from media guides of the previous century.

    this thread title is misleading. fielder is not retiring. if he were retiring, he'd forfeit what's guaranteed to him through 2020. he is part of the texas rangers organization, and is being paid by texas (and the amount pledged by detroit when they traded him). fielder has not been designated for assignment, nor has he been released. he remains on the 60-day disabled list, and will until the season ends. at that point, texas can release him or trade him (likely forfeiting any insurance money), or they can add him back to their 40-man roster (which keeps him in the texas organization). come spring training 2017, fielder is a near-guarantee to be put back onto the 60-day disabled list, then back on the 40-man throughout the 2017-2018 offseason. keep repeating this until 2020, when his contract expires. unless the rangers are super desperate for a 40-man roster spot in any of the next four offseasons, i can't see them cutting ties with fielder. so, if you are hopeful that the brewers sign fielder, look for that to happen no earlier than 2021.

    seitzer had only one stint with the brewers organization. cirillo had two.

    i believe that in order for texas to collect on their insurance policy, fielder needs to remain part of the organization. that may require that he be added back to the 40-man roster each offseason, and then put on the 60-day disabled list during each remaining season of his contract. if this is the case, this handicaps texas' offseason moves. i recall that the orioles kept albert belle on their roster during the offseason in order to collect insurance payments.
