  1. he was on a spring training webcast this year. he did just okay, but you could notice his improvement once he got into a groove.
  2. i was at that doubleheader with my brother. so many great memories from those two games: --robin yount hit a based loaded triple in game one. it was the last yount hit i'd ever witness, and it was a great way to cap off my memory of him. --kevin reimer got six hits in game two. --darryl hamilton nearly hit for the cycle in game one. all he needed was a double, and he was about halfway to first before he slammed on the brakes and scampered back to first base. to this day, i still don't know why he didn't try for two. --dickie thon was ejected, which led to john jaha moving to second base, robin yount to first base, and game 1 starting pitcher ricky bones to right field. --i seem to recall jaha moving back and forth between the second base position and third base position batter by batter (or perhaps pitch by pitch). when he next came to bat, bob betts announced him as, "now batting, infielder, john jaha". --reliever matt maysey was forced to bat in the extra innings. he got a base hit, which set up the stage for dave nilsson's game-winning rbi. --my mom had gone to bed, woke up later, and was worried that my brother and i hadn't come home yet. she called wtmj to ask about the game and the staffer told her that the game had just ended. --i am pretty certain that the next day, someone sent a bouquet arrangement of suckers to the visitors' clubhouse to the attention of edwin nunez.
  3. the club has deemed that junior guerra has reached his innings pitched limit and has shut him down for the season. he has recovered from his album injury and should enter 2017 healthy and ready to pitch.
  4. it's too early to assess if keon broxton will be out long-term after crashing into the wall at wrigley field. club officials also have to consider that ryan braun will likely go on paternity leave next week for the birth of his second child.
  5. pretty cool stat for tyler thornburg: holding the last 35 right-handed hitters he has faced hitless. longest streak in the majors this year. last rhb to get a hit off thornburg? rickie weeks on 28 july.
  6. i believe that the brewers were auditioning kirk nieuwenhuis as a waiver deadline trade candidate . . . hence santana's limited playing time in august.
  7. junior guerra is second to cal eldred in era, batting average against, and whip for brewers rookies with 100+ innings thrown. eldred got a stadium cup boasting those rookie feats. guerra should, too.
  8. we now know that the brewers were very close to acquiring two 40-man roster players from the dodgers for ryan braun. one has to wonder if middlebrooks (he with an 'r' in his last name) was outrighted to make room for one of the dodger players. two weeks have passed, and that roster spot is still unclaimed. it seems logical that the cut of middlebrooks was for the trade that didn't happen.
  9. braun's baby is due 22 september. the last home game is 25 september.
  10. ryan braun's second child is due during the next homestand. a roster spot is open if they want to select the contract of an outfielder during his paternity leave. but with yadiel rivera on the roster to back up the infield and domingo santana getting starts in left, they'll probably just use hernan perez as an outfielder during that time.
  11. working against susac: he has two minor league options remaining. he was optioned in 2015 at the end of spring training, but spent less than 20 days optioned, so his 2015 option was not burned.
  12. it seemed odd that the brewers carried a four man bench for a good chunk of the season, and it seems even more odd that they're carrying only a six man bench the day after the minor league seasons have ended. i know that more players can still be recalled or have their contracts selected, but still . . .
  13. newly acquired ryan cordell is rule 5 eligible this year. some tough decisions looming on which outfielders to protect.
  14. at first, i was puzzled by the logic of this move. but then i looked at the standings. i didn't know that the yankees were in the wild card race. should the yankees reach the postseason, after certain conditions were met, young jr. would be eligible to play for the yankees, because he was part of their organization on 31 august.
  15. traded to the yankees for cash. i don't think anyone expected his contract to be selected by the brewers this year, but this assures he won't don a big league uniform for the brewers in 2016.
  16. i'm hoping for: kyle wren josmil pinto wei-chung wang garin cecchini josh hader yadiel rivera ben rowen damien magnifico space made courtesy of: trade of blaine boyer for a minor leaguer or cash outright of andy wilkins outright or trade of kirk nieuwenhuis
  17. They don't have to be designated for assignment. But they do have to clear outright waivers, which are irrevocable. DFA is simply a way for a team to remove a player from the roster while it figures out what to do with him. an outright assignment to the minors after clearing waivers is one of a team's options when designating a player for assignment. the other options are trading or releasing that player. teams have ten days after dfa-ing a player to make that choice, which is why you often see players outrighted later, because the team wants to explore all trading options. in the case of middlebrooks, as a courtesy, the brewers likely chose to try to outright him (which meant that any other team could've claimed him first and added him to their major league roster). that obviously didn't happen, hence the outright assignment.
  18. middlebrooks didn't play in either game of yesterday's doubleheader for biloxi . . . which i found to be odd. now it makes sense.
  19. with today's outright of will middlebrooks, the roster is at 39. that spot will likely be filled within a week.
  20. well . . . now he has something in common with moises alou.
  21. he wanted to put an ad in the local paper (presumably the milwaukee journal) to thank the fans. he didn't, because it was too expensive. instead, he can use that money to lawyer up.
  22. veteran players tend to get brief rehab stints, whereas with younger players, rehab stints are often as if the player was optioned for a longer period.
  23. ramon flores has been outrighted to class aaa colorado springs.
  24. per the 2005 media guide, on 30 august 2004, the brewers optioned travis phelps to aaa indianapolis. on 7 september, he was recalled. that's fewer than 10 days.
  25. i had forgotten that the club was back to an eight-man bullpen. yes, a reliever could be optioned--but not for a few days. he'd have to be optioned for 10 days.
