  1. digging further into the transaction history of hector gomez, he was optioned by the colorado rockies in spring training of 2009, 2010 and 2011. made his big league debut in 2011, and collected two hits in six at-bats. he began the 2012 season on the major league disabled list, and the brewers claimed him in june 2012. of special interest: to make room for hector gomez in 2012, the brewers designated brandon kintzler for assignment. he went unclaimed, and was outrighted. as we all know, kintzler remains in the organization on the major league roster. thus, gomez may have cost the brewers hiram burgos (or caleb gindl, if he is claimed by another team or declares minor league free agency) . . . but the brewers did not lose kintzler for gomez.
  2. as many expected, the contracts of matt clark and hector gomez have been purchased. jason rogers recalled. the active roster is at 34. odd that rob wooten hasn't been recalled, as he was the go-to-guy when shuttling a pitcher back and forth. i know he wasn't great in 2014 at either level, so maybe that's why. of course, the brewers could still recall him.
  3. the brewers have designated caleb gindl for assignment and have released hiram burgos. the contracts of matt clark and hector gomez have been purchased. the roster is full again. hector gomez will have zero minor league options in 2015. it appears that matt clark will have three remaining options in 2015.
  4. wang activated, and has a new uniform number (58).
  5. tom haudricourt hints that the brewers may be adding more players not currently on the 40-man roster . . .
  6. matt pagnozzi had his contract purchased by the brewers. to make room, jeff bianchi was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. the 40-man remains full.
  7. logan schafer and jimmy nelson recalled. matt garza and wei-chung wang activated from the disabled list. matt pagnozzi had his contract purchased. to make room for him, jeff bianchi was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. the active roster is at 31.
  8. the sounds were eliminated yesterday. jason rogers and logan schafer are not in the sounds' starting lineup tonight.
  9. gerardo parra stands to make quite a bit of money in 2015 if the brewers tender him a contract.
  10. with the trade for jonathan broxton, the 40-man roster is full. it is possible that one or both of the players to be named in the trade are on the brewers' 40-man roster.
  11. with the sounds' elimination number at three, i'm hoping they are eliminated as early as tomorrow (doubleheader tomorrow). elimination from the playoffs on 30 august means more players available on 1 september (with travel on 31 august to chicago).
  12. players on the 40-man selected: pitchers brooks hall, ariel pena and wei-chung wang. pena would be out of minor league options come 2015. minor leaguers selected: pitcher tyler wagner, infielders hector gomez and nick ramirez, outfielder tyrone taylor, catcher shawn zarraga (taxi squad)
  13. i hope each reds/cardinals game this week goes extra innings with the reds prevailing in every one.
  14. there is a spot open on the 40-man right now, but if additional spots are needed, and the brewers don't want to risk losing anyone else in the organization, the brewers could recall johnny hellweg, hiram burgos or brooks hall and transfer any of them to the 60-day disabled list. thus, to bring up any other players beyond one not currently on the 40-man, the brewers could essentially be paying double ($100,000) for that player ($50,000 plus travel costs for the healthy player, and $50,000 for the injured player). this is of course, assuming that 40-man roster room is created via transfers to the 60-day disabled list of players currently optioned to the minors.
  15. the more i think about it, the more i like the idea of jeff bianchi moved to the 60-day disabled list or released, and the contract of eugenio velez purchased. he allows the brewers to comfortably use rickie weeks, scooter gennett or gerardo parra early in a game as a pinch hitter, as he can play their positions. he's been hitting well at aaa, and has mlb experience. also, if the brewers purchase the contract of a third catcher, velez could be used as a pinch runner when jonathan lucroy or martin maldonado reach base late in the game.
  16. 1. move the non-waiver trading deadline from 31 july to the middle of august. 2. allow for a 26-man roster to start the season, with one player as an unavailable reserve. this allows each club to carry an extra player until that one unavailable reserve player is needed (usually the fourth or fifth starting pitcher). 3. i agree with doug melvin's suggestion when rosters expand to 40 in september. each club sets a roster with an equal number of players per game. if the brewers roster is at 29 and their opponent's is at 31, each team's roster of eligible players cannot exceed 29 for that game, and if the brewers decide to go with 28 players, so must the other club. 4. require all clubs to enforce a no mobile phone use for voice calls in lower seating behind home plate. if you need to use your phone for a voice call, you leave your seat and head up to the concourse. this will improve the viewing experience for those watching the game on their televisions and mobile devices. 5. require clubs that give kids t-shirts to wear for on-field activities (like helping the grounds crew swap the bases) to give out youth-sized t-shirts. i'm sick of seeing kids drowning in adult t-shirts at games.
  17. nashville, like milwaukee, is currently leading its division. players will be needed for the playoff pushes of both teams. fortunately, the pacific coast league postseason doesn't last too deep into september, so additional players may come to the brewers when the pcl run ends.
  18. yes. but any of those players would first have to be activated from the minor league disabled list, recalled by the brewers, and then placed on the 60-day disabled list. any of those players would then be earning major league service time and major league pay.
  19. future flexibility with what? it shouldn't be future flexibility with minor league options as 2014 was his second year of minor league options. if he's recalled before the end of this season, he'll still have one minor league option year remaining in 2015.
  20. one would think that ariel pena will get the call. he'll be out of minor league options in 2015, so this is the last chance for the brewers to see how he can handle the big leagues. if he can cut down on the walks, he has a shot as a long man out of the bullpen.
  21. falu was outrighted just a few days ago, so the roster is at 39. bianchi is a likely candidate to be transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open up another spot on the 40-man. we'll likely see bianchi transferred to the 60-day disabled list before we see johnny hellweg, hiram burgos or brooks hall recalled and placed on the 60-day disabled list.
  22. i missed this transaction from a few days ago. the brewers outrighted irving falu to the minor leagues. the roster stands at 39.
  23. somebody call fire marshal bill.
  24. 2008 was the first time the brewers drew over 3 million fans. 2008: 3,068,458 2009: 3,037,451 2010: 2,776,531 2011: 3,071,373 even with a departed sabathia, the fans came out in droves in 2009. take away that postseason appearance, and the brewers likely draw 200,000 - 400,000 fewer fans. could the brewers have sustained the payroll they've had from 2008 - 2014 with fewer fans attending games?
