  1. i just wanted to bump this thread because i'm optimistic for a healthy and productive ramirez for 2014. it's great insight on his future with the brewers.
  2. could texas be interested in weeks with jurickson profar out ?
  3. alfredo figaro and caleb gindl optioned. they can be sent up and down in 2014, but will enter 2015 with no options remaining.
  4. zach duke's opt-out confirmed as 26 march here. if duke accepts a minor league assignment, the brewers have to pay him an extra $100,000 and his opt-out date becomes 1 june.
  5. what's an article xx(b) free agent and how does it relate to zach duke, lyle overbay and mark reynolds and their 40-man roster status?
  6. zach duke can declare free agency if he's not assured a spot on the 25-man roster by 26 march. he could accept an assignment to aaa-nashville, but the brewers would have to pay him an additional $100,000, and he'd have an opt-out date of 1 june.
  7. this especially makes sense if they have duke, wang and smith on the 25-man to cover long relief. i'd feel better about optioning peralta earlier, so that his 10 days down could end by 8 april (if needed to start that day), but still be less than 20 days down (and no option burned) if recalled by 13 april.
  8. i still question why all five starting pitchers need to be on the big league roster on opening day. it's very likely that four of them won't be used in the game at all, so why take up the roster space? could/should the brewers option a player like marco estrada or wily peralta to the minor leagues 5 – 7 days before opening day? the rationale is that because he's not expected to pitch until the fifth game of the season, another player (a bullpen arm, a position player or a guy to dh in boston) could be there to take his place for the first few games. said starting pitcher would travel north with the brewers, after getting some regular work on the minor league side of spring camp, and having been sent down for the 10-day minimum, could be recalled by the fifth game without burning an option year (like alfredo figaro with his brief stay with nashville last year). if the opening day guy sent down was needed to replace an injured player, he wouldn't have to stay down 10 days before being recalled (provided the injured player goes on the disabled list). granted, this strategy gets messed up by having garza pitching in minor league games from here on out.
  9. indications are that overbay makes the club. if he struggles, will he be treated like 2013's alex gonzalez or 2013's yuniesky betancourt?
  10. interesting insight from tom haudricourt today about both weeks and gennett both breaking camp with the club.
  11. reynolds is starting in right field today. he has three innings of right field experience in the major leagues regular season.
  12. if reynolds isn't on the 40-man roster within 48 hours after 24 march, he can elect free agency.
  13. update from todd rosiak:
  14. we've yet to hear if duke has an opt-out clause in his contract, but i'd suspect that he does and can declare free agency if he doesn't make the big league club. again, just suspicion on my part. if bianchi is lost to the organization and herrera makes the club, the brewers have no depth at nashville on the 40-man for the left side of the infield. thus, advantage to both making the club, or keeping bianchi and optioning herrera.
  15. confirmed by ron roenicke today.
  16. Interesting you don't think Reynolds makes the team? i see reynolds as being the same type of player as francisco (even though they're opposite side of the plate hitters), and francisco can remain under team control longer. i know it gives you two lefties in overbay and francisco. however, my prediction got messed up with the optioning of halton yesterday. i don't think the brewers will want to go with only one backup outfielder in schafer, which leaves herrera and gindl as the only remaining in-house options. i'm now thinking that bianchi and herrera both make the club--especially with ramirez as such an injury risk. i wouldn't be surprised to see francisco getting some starts at third, but being pulled late in the game for a better defender in bianchi or herrera. i do not want bianchi outrighted to allow a non-roster player to make the club, as it leaves the brewers with no experienced utility infielders on the 40-man roster.
  17. velez returned to minor league camp today.
  18. i've updated mine: rotation: gallardo, garza, lohse, estrada, peralta bullpen: henderson, kintzler, smith, thornburg, wang, rodriguez, duke (takes roster spot vacated by de la torre) outfield: davis, gomez, braun, schafer (halton also for the corner spots) infield: ramirez, segura, bianchi, weeks (but traded in may to a team that loses their second baseman to injury), halton, francisco, overbay (takes roster spot of a pitcher that is outrighted [pena or fiers]) catcher: lucroy, maldonado 15-day disabled list: gorzelanny (smith or thornburg on the hot seat when he is activated)
  19. gallardo confirmed for opening day. lohse confirmed for game two. nothing else yet, per ron roenicke.
  20. if the brewers opt to keep duke over wang, they likely only get one year of service out of a veteran who then becomes a free agent and could sign anywhere. if they opt to keep wang on the 25-man roster all season, they control him from 2015-2020 and can option him back and forth from 2015-2018.
  21. jose de la torre was outrighted to the minor leagues yesterday. the roster stands at 39. zach duke, lyle overbay, mark reynolds and wei-chung wang all got a little more excited yesterday.
  22. reports now are that tom gorzelanny will likely open the season on the disabled list. if the brewers desire left-handers in their bullpen, this bodes well for wang and/or duke . . .
  23. johnny hellweg has been optioned. assuming he's down for at least 20 days, he enters 2015 with no minor league options remaining.
  24. come 2015 spring training, the brewers may have a lot of players that are out of minor league options. assuming they're still on the 40-man roster and they spend more than 20 days in the minor leagues in 2014, these players will be out of options at the conclusion of 2015 spring training: jeff bianchi (out of options for 2014) marco estrada mike fiers alfredo figaro juan francisco caleb gindl elian herrera johnny hellweg brandon kintzler martin maldonado ariel pena wily peralta will smith tyler thornburg it's probable that marco estrada, juan francisco and martin maldonado won't be sent down in 2014. pretty good chances that wily peralta and will smith won't either--preserving their options for 2015. the brewers may take this into consideration as they shape the 2014 40-man roster. a player like ariel pena may be outrighted, knowing that if he remains on the 40-man, he's likely battling it out with mike fiers, johnny hellweg and tyler thornburg for one or two of the last pitching slots on the 25-man roster for opening day 2015.
