  1. there are 23 days left in the season. a player burns his option if he spends 20 days or more on optional assignment. if a player is sent on optional assignment, he must meet a 10-day requisite stay unless being recalled to replace a player on the injured list (including the special covid-19 injured list), the bereavement list, the paternity list, or as the 29th man for a doubleheader. consider this: the brewers have three days with doubleheaders (all against the cardinals) which allows them to recall a player as the 29th man. j.p feyereisen has spent 17 days on optional assignment. if he is optioned again, he most likely will burn his first option. he is a likely candidate to be sent down when corey knebel is activated, unless the club decides to option a position player. mark mathias has spent 19 days on optional assignment. if he is optioned again, he definitely will burn his first option. phil bickford and justin topa were both sent on optional assignment 4 september. if they stay optioned the rest of the season (hitting 20 days within 24 days), they will each burn their first option. orlando arcia, corbin burnes, mat gamel, josh hader, keston hiura, omar narvaez, freddy peralta, drew rasmussen, brent suter, luis urias, devin williams, brandon woodruff and eric yardley all have spent their entire 40-man roster time on the active major league roster. any of them could be optioned for just the requisite 10 days (plus a few more for padding), without burning that option to keep any of bickford, feyereisen, mathias or topa on the active roster and from burning their options. jacob nottingham and tyrone taylor, both currently on the active roster, have already burned their 2020 options. obviously, the club needs to evaluate the cost of removing any of the aforementioned players from the active roster in their efforts to gain a postseason berth, and the value of the recalled player as a replacement--if the motivation of the move is to keep a player's option from burning. if a player goes down with an injury, or if the brewers tank, it makes sense for the club to recall a player who has yet to burn his option, rather than turning to the pool of david freitas, ryon healy, eric lauer, angel perdomo, corey ray, ronny rodriguez or bobby wahl (who is currently injured and likely not available for recall)--all of whom have already burned their options this year.
  2. justin topa was optioned to the alternate training site in grand chute when jedd gyorko was activated from the bereavement list. he becomes the third player sent on optional assignment in september. if topa spends at least 20 days optioned, he will burn his first option. brewers media guides started listing transactions of the previous season/offseason in 2000 (when they started being much thicker with much more content). no players were sent on optional assignment in the month of september from 1999 - 2012. this isn't surprising, considering that active rosters could expand to 40 in september.
  3. trey supak was optioned to the alternate training site in grand chute on 1 september when tyrone taylor was recalled from there. justin topa was optioned to the alternate training site in grand chute on 4 september when jedd gyroko was reinstated from the bereavement list.
  4. corey knebel should be activated this weekend.
  5. all three have cleared intake. the cpp is at 59.
  6. daniel vogelbach is added to the cpp. justin smoak is removed and is limbo until his assignment is determined. the cpp is at 59.
  7. daniel vogelbach claimed off waivers from toronto. he is out of options, but has never been outrighted to the minor leagues. justin smoak designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade or release smoak, or attempt to outright him to the alternate training site. he has enough service time to refuse the outright assignment to grand chute and become a free agent. brandon woodruff reinstated from the paternity list, and phil bickford is optioned to the alternate training site. if bickford spends at least 20 days optioned, he will burn his first option. the brewers have now sent two players on optional assignment in september. the last time the club optioned a player in september was in 2015, but it was a waiver claim (daniel fields), whom they optioned to a club whose season had already finished. prior to that, it was another waiver claim in september 2013 (jose de la torra), but he was optioned to rookie helena. i haven't researched any earlier than 2013. the roster remains at 40, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.
  8. follow chris mehring for scrimmage updates from grand chute.
  9. found confirmation of carlos rodriguez. when these three players clear intake, the cpp will be at its highest of the season: 59.
  10. i am not seeing carlos rodriguez, but do see bowden francis and gabe holt. source?
  11. phil bickford has contract selected from the alternate training site in grand chute; he will make his 40-man roster debut with three options. the roster is at 40, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list. also of note: trey supak was sent on optional assignment today to the alternate training site. i'm hard pressed to remember the last time a brewer was optioned in september.
  12. no. any player who wanted to opt back in to his team's club player pool had to do so by 1 august. i believe that it's possible, however, if that player were released from his contract and became a free agent, that he would be eligible to sign with any other team and be added to their cpp. and from what i've gathered, i'm pretty sure that if the brewers traded cain (players on the restricted list can be assigned to another club via an approved transaction), he could join that new team's cpp. we know that clubs may only trade players in their cpp, but we also know that a player who spent time in his team's cpp but was later removed was allowed to be traded and assigned to his new team's cpp. but, i'm not certain on this possibility. but, i say with certainty that cain cannot return to playing for the brewers in 2020. he is done. he is forfeiting salary and service time with his decision. i guess there's always negotiating . . . isan diaz was able to opt back in.
  13. justin grimm was released yesterday. the cpp is at 56.
  14. justin grimm was released yesterday.
  15. corey knebel has been sent out on a minor league rehab assignment at the alternate training site in grand chute.
  16. david phelps traded for three players to named. trey supak recalled; he had already burned his second option. justin topa has his contract selected; he will make his 40-man roster debut with three options. the roster is at 39, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.
  17. david phelps traded for three players to named later, removing him from the brewers' cpp. the cpp is at 56 players.
  18. appears to be a season-ending injury for manny pina. he could be transferred to the 45-day injured list if the club needs either a 40-man roster spot or a 60-man club player pool spot. but both currently have at least one spot open.
  19. jake faria, eric lauer, angel perdomo and bobby wahl are the only non-injured list pitchers at the alternate training site with major league experience. lauer and wahl can be recalled at any point, and faria can have his contract selected at any point. perdomo was optioned on 23 august and must stay on optional assignment for at least 10 days, barring an injury.
  20. justin grimm has been designated for assignment. while he is in limbo, the cpp is at 57. grimm has the right to refuse an outright assignment to the alternate training site.
  21. justin grimm has been designated for assignment in order to return to a 28-man roster after yesterday's doubleheader. the brewers have seven days to try to trade or have grimm accept an outright assignment to the alternate training site if he clears outright waivers, or release him. grimm has the right to refuse the assignment and become a free agent. the roster is at 39, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.
  22. i want tim dillard to retire from playing so he can broadcast for the brewers.
  23. justin grimm activated from the injured list. because he's the 29th man for today's doubleheader, no corresponding roster move needs to be made.
  24. brock holt was released yesterday. the cpp is at 58.
  25. brock holt was released yesterday.
