  1. Does James really have any chance at all of getting drafted next year? Does his lack of development show Crean in a bad light? I guess I don't think so since McNeal and Matthews have each gotten much better over their last 3 years. In Bucks news: Would anyone really be all the excited if the Bucks squeak into the playoffs with the #8 seed? I know I wouldn't be, it seems remarkebly easy to make the playoffs once every couple of years in the NBA simply because they allow 8 teams a conference. Once they can get a #6 or higher seed then I will start to think the Bucks are turning the corner. I would like to think they could turn out to be like the Hawks were last year as a #8 but I just don't see the Bucks having any chance whatsoever against the Celtics or Cavs.
  2. I wouldn't say that all big market teams disregard draft picks. Boston immediately comes to mind as a big market team that builids a lot around the draft. But you are probably right, most large market teams are always in Win Now mode so it makes sense for them to reap the immediate benefits of signing a Type A instead of waiting 3-5 years for that draft pick to possibly pay off in the big leagues.
  3. If you go to rotoworld main MLB page they have a nice recap of their Top 100 prospects from 2004. There are quite a few Brewers on the list: Fielder, Hardy, Hart, Parra, Krynzel, Nelson, and Jones. So it looks to me like they batted .500. Overall it seems like they did a decent job although they admit that Baseball America had fewer misses. It is pretty amazing that the Crew had 7 of the top 100 that year.
  4. Is it April yet? These last 2 winters have been pretty freaking ridiculous. Whats worse is that I am buying a house in the beginning of February. I am really looking forward to moving when it is 5 degrees outside. Luckily I will be moving over a 2 week period so hopefully I can pick a day in there in the 20's to move most of my big stuff. That February heating bill is probably going to be a big shock since I have never paid for heat before. I am expecting it but it will still suck.
  5. I wonder how much Ben's Type A status has on his perspective teams? I would imagine that most teams would prefer to sign a "sure thing" if they are giving up a draft pick and Sheets is far from a sure thing. I think the Mets were also looking at resigning Oliver Perez but I can't remember hearing anything about him recently. If Sheets thinks Milwaukeans gave him a hard time about injuries I can't imagine New Yorkers will be any more hospitable. But then again any team that signs Sheets knows his injury history so they shouldn't be all that suprised if something does happen. (I can't specifically remember if Sheets ever gave the fans crap for calling him injury prone)
  6. Atlanta already has 3 new starters this year (Lowe, Vaszuez, and the Japanese dude), I doubt they are interested in Sheets any more. They really have the Top #5 locked up (Hudson, Lowe, Jurrgens, Kawakami, and Vasquez). They probably have starting pitching to spare right now with Campillo, Reyes, and Morton on the outside looking in.
  7. Well with Lowe signing with Atlanta that is one more potential suitor gone. It really seems like it is the Rangers or bust for Sheets at this point. There is no else out there that is interested and has the budget to take the risk.
  8. Hopefully his offseason lasik surgery wil magically allow him to hit something other than a fastball again. On Hardy, I will be very interested to see what happens in the next 2 years. If all goes as planned, Alcides will be ready for the bigs in 2010, if Hardy is signed long term, what do you do with Escobar? If Hardy is still going year to year do you try to trade him or do you still try to get an extension done? Who would be required to move? If Alcides has another good year in 2009 do you maximize his value and try to get some solid pitching in a trade? IMO I would sign Hardy long term, let Alcides play out this year and then decide what to do next offseason. An MLB ready gold glove calibur SS would draw pretty significant interest I would think, especially if the SS FA market is weak next year. Given Alcides athleticsm I would think he could adapt rather quickly to another position, perhaps 2nd, 3rd or even CF. I don't believe Hardy could adapt as well to a new position but I could be wrong.
  9. Maybe is they were adding salary they should get Khol's approval but why do they need approval if they are shedding salary. It seems odd that they are essentially "giving up" on their last 2 1st round picks very quickly. Yi was gone after one year and Alexander might not make it a whole year. I am not sure what the point of drafting Alexander #6 overall, not really giving him much a chance in the rotation, and then shipping him off in 3 months really accomplishes. It sounds like a complete waste of a high draft pick.
  10. It still wouldn't make sense to play for draft picks next year because they are right in the middle of the playoff hunt, losing Sessions and Alexander and adding Conley would make this team worse IMO. On a related note, if this rumor is indeed true, it is pretty freakin ridiculous that they need Harb Kohl's approval on this. Stay out of the way Herb. Its not like they are looking to take on a huge contract, its purely a basketball move, and Kohl wouldn't have the faintest idea if it is a good trade or not. He probably has no idea who Conley is.
  11. Henderson's induction speech is going to be epic.
  12. I don't really get that deal unless a 1st is involved. Right now Sessions is a better player than Conley and then to include Alexander as well? It would have to include their 1st, which will likely be a very high pick.
  13. Since you are posting from the future, why bother even going since you probably know the outcome http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Hint: Your tag is 2018 I don't think WV is nearly as good as some people think they are, sure they are a good team; but I feel if both teams play like they are capable of, Marquette should win. Once Marquette starts playing Pittsburgh, Uconn, and other teams who have legitimate big men they will be in trouble IMO
  14. Going back to the original tread title, I would think Lowe would sign that contract the minute he got it. Since Doug has made no indication that he is at all interested in Lowe and the fact that the other 4 teams are big market teams, I find it highly unlikely that the Brewers will make any offer that would get Lower interested. I would love to have him for 3/40 but I just find it very unlikely. If the Crew does get a starter it will more than likely be a Looper, Wolf, Garland type.
  15. I wonder if Barry Bonds or Sammy Sosa will be in attendance? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. I wouldn't say that no one wants Bill Hall, I am sure their is some team out there that thinks he can play like 2006 again and will gamble with that contract. You are right about our potential 3rd base problem though. It wouldn't necessarily have to be Bill Hall, but obviously someone with a substantial salary would have to get traded in order for a trade for Peavy to work. I guess it would probably have to be one of the young arby guys thats getting a big pay raise, but then the deal probably gets much more complicated because the Brewers would need more in return.
  17. Yeah I don't think Peavy is a good fit. The Padres sound like the want to take almost no payroll back and the Brewers would probably have to get rid of some payroll to get Peavy. Unless it is a 3 way deal I don't see it happening. The Padres will want high level prospects and the Crew will want to get rid of some contracts like Bill Hall for example. maybe you could work out something like this: Brewers get: Peavy Padres get: Angel Salome Zack Braddock Player from team C Player from team C Team C gets: Bill Hall Additional player from Padres Additional player from Brewers
  18. I know the reasoning behind it but it is still weird that their is a temperature below 0. Hopefully my car starts next week.
  19. I think I would probably rather have Randy Wolf, but I wouldn't be terribly upset with Garland as long as the price is right and as long as it isn't more than 2-3 years. I also wouldn't mind Looper or maybe even Tim Redding. Not a whole lot of good options out there anymore. Perhaps a trade is more likely
  20. If I'm not mistaken, not including Bush, Fielder, Hardy, Hart, McClung, and Weeks, this brings the total payroll to $56mil. I'm thinking the total payroll will cap out around $80mil. I'm terrible at estimating Arby settlements. However, it does not appear that there would be much room (assuming a $80mil payroll) to sign a starter (much less resign Sheets for about the $10 - $15 mil he will probably end up with).I would agree with that assessment. The Brewers would have to trade a Bill, Mike Cameron, or even a Prince Fielder in order to get a legitimate starter. I don't think however that Sheets is going to get anywhere near $15M, I think he will be lucky to get $10M at this point.
  21. I do wonder how much money Doug saved by doing this now rather than 1-2 months ago. I bet he saved a couple million bucks. I only thought 6-7.5 was a little high because Fuentes is only getting 8.5 next year, is in the prime of his career, and had a much better year last year. Overall it isn't a bad deal at all.
  22. $6.5M seems to be overpaying a bit, but at this point I don't really care. I am pretty comfortable with our bullpen right now, Doug just needs to add a #3 type starter (Or Sheets) and I will be pretty confident that the Crew can compete this coming year
  23. * Multiple fingers and toes crossed*
  24. If we get Hoffman I would be pretty satisfied with our bullpen make-up as log as we can get McClung in the bullpen and not in the rotation. Maybe by signing Looper. We won't have the best pitching staff in the world, but I think it will keep us in most games. It does seem fairly obvious that our offense is going to have to be better than last year, but if Hoffman is signed I think the Crew is more than capable of competing.
  25. That is logical because those markets are so much bigger and they have much bigger fan bases. It only makes sense that more kids would grow up wanting to be a Yankee fan or a Dodger fan because their are simply more Dodger fans and Yankee fans out there. It doesn't hurt that those teams have much more prestige and history than the Brewers do. Like has been said previously, I don't think that has anything to do with the city of Milwaukee.
