  1. Don Sutton is officially joinng Jim in the booth. That should be one nice combination
  2. IMO Ben is a little loopy if he thinks he is going to get and that he actually wants a 3 year deal for a couple reason. A. No team is going to give him 3 years at his price considering he had a somewhat serious arm injury at the end of last year, not to mention the multitude of other nagging type of injuries he usually gets B. This offseason is obviously a down market, why on earth would Ben want to lock himself into a 3 year contract far below what he is actually worth? Why would he not do a 1 year deal with a player option for year #2? It just doesn't make any sense IMO. That is unless he is still asking for a 3 year deal in excess of $40M or something like that. C. If The Rangers are the only seriously interested team, they are not going to bid against themselves, they probably know that their has been little interest from other teams so there is no reason to give Ben what he wants. It seems Ben has very little if any leverage. I would still love to have him back. Offer the 1st year at $10M and then give him a $12M player option for year #2. If he has a good year next year he can cash in this offseason. You could even put in some escalators if the Brewers make the playoffs, if he makes 30 starts, and if he pitches 180-200 innings.
  3. So why hasn't anyone started the annual Countdown in Pictures thread? Or is that for Opening Day?
  4. That is really sad. No offense to anyone who may work at Walmart, but that might be the last place on earth I would ever want to work. These GM employees were probably paid pretty nicely before and now having to settle for a near minimum wage job really has to wear on their pride. But I suppose if you are in danger of losing your house, car, etc you have to swallow your pride and get any job you can find.
  5. Then what happens if the Mets resign Oliver Perez. The Rangers would be the only team left that has shown even remote interest. The farther this drags on the likelihood that Sheets is a Brewer probably increases. I would suspect that Ben and his agent would have to be the one to initate contact though.
  6. What if a right handed hitter is in a terrible slump (Like Corey in September) and Macha wants to sit him but we will be facing several left handed pitchers but only have left handed replacements? Everyone would be fine with either A. Leaving Corey (or whoever) out there despite sucking or B. Having Gwynn/Duffy/Nelson etc hit against lefties and will more than likely fail? Wouldn't it be nice to have a Gabe Kapler or whoever to step and play a couple of days if a starter is struggling? Maybe you really only need a right handed bench bat in 50 AB's over the course of the season. A lefty get 10 hits, a righty gets 15-17. Its only 5 hits but most of those would probably come in late game situations and would potentially be game changing hits. I am just not comfortable at all with not having a single right handed bat on the bench besides your back up catcher. In my mind you are just asking for trouble and will potentially face matchup nightmares night after night. I am sure there are many other instances where it is imperative that we have right handed depth on the bench, I just need some time to come up with them.
  7. You are right MNBrew that is super obvious and I did miss it. Facing a good lefty starter in the 8th inning of a close game, pitcher spot comes up, all we have is crappy left handed hitters on the bench. Now what?
  8. Draft like the Cubs EDIT: Or Pirates
  9. I still think the Crew needs some kind of right bat off of the bench, What if for whatever reason Macha double switches and the Pitcher is due up behind Fielder in the 8th inning when a lefty is brought in to face Fielder? What if Kendall got hurt and Rivera had to go into the game? Who the heck is going to hit. I sure as heck wouldn't want Gwynn, Nelson, Duffy, or any of our other lefties hitting in that situation. Just that fact alone would seems to indicate that either McGehee or Rottino are a lock to make the roster or a scrap heap veteran will need to be brought in.
  10. I kind of wonder what would have happened if he did accept arby and got $12M or whatever. Since our payroll is maxed out without him I imagine the previously speculated Cameron for Cabrera trade would have been completed. Payroll would have had to been cut somewhere thats for sure. We also probably would not have signed Hoffman At this point I think I would rather have Cameron starting in CF and Hoffman as our closer than have Sheets for 20-25 starts, Melky Cabrera starting in CF, and who knows as our closer.
  11. Hopefully UW turns it around quickly because after a couple more losses they will find themselves on the tournament bubble. The win at VT does look pretty good now that VT beat Wake, but that is literally there only good win so far this year and Iowa is a very bad loss. Iowa is just not very good.
  12. He probably reaggravated it after originally thinking he could make it without surgery. That seems like the only explanation to me. From a Brewers perspective I am happy, but the Crew doesn't play STL until the middle of May so he might be back by then. Of course Glaus could have hurt himself skydiving or something stupid like that too I suppose. Maybe he was rock climbing.
  13. It is getting awfully close to Spring Training yet Sheets and Oliver Perez still remain unsigned. Maybe I just have a short memory but I can't remember that 2 pitchers of this quality are still available at the end of January. At this point I wouldn't be all the suprised if he waits for an injury in Spring Training before he signs with someone. That might actually be his best bet for maximizing his contract. I would still love him back and would certainly give him a 2 year contract, but it isn't up to the fans. It appears that Doug has other plans, plus to sign Sheets we would probably have to trade someone anyways.
  14. I love listening to the Beatles while driving, not sure why though.
  15. It is pretty amazing that the Bucks can play as bad as they did against the Clippers and Trail Blazers and then they come home and almost beat the Mavericks by 40. That was a heck of a game last night, nobody could miss.
  16. I would have no problem with this, at worst it gives Melvin some cost certainty. Plus I think Fielder would be a more valuable trading chip because any potential trading partner would also have some cost certainty. I personally think it would be a bad idea to go more than 2 years because of the previously mentioned problems with his weight. Prince certainly cares about his money, there is nothing wrong with that, and this deal will perhaps put him at ease.
  17. The Brewers wouldn't really carry over $5M to next year if they don't spend it this year would they? I would think if they have $5M to spend this year and they don't spend it that the $5M never gets spent. If some random business's expense came below budget for one year I doubt they increase their budget next year to compensate. I know that isn't a perfect example. As it stands now their is simply no way we could fit Dunn into our budget. It seems the only way it could happen is trading one of Bill Hall, Mike Cameron, or maybe Corey Hart. Hart is really the only guy I could realistically see traded. If we save about $2 million on that trade that still only gives Melvin about $6-7 Million to work with and I just don't think Dunn will come that cheap. We would have to give Bill Hall away for free and somehow find a 3rd base replacement in order to sign Dunn. I highly doubt anyone trades for Bill Hall so it seems like Dunn is pretty unlikely at this point unless the budget is higher than we think. If it is $83-85 million, then I think Melvin could make a run at him.
  18. In that scenario I would be terrified of our OF defense. But Cameron is probably the only tradeable guy that could free enough salary unless Fielder or heaven forbid Suppan is traded.
  19. Please explain to me how rebounds and assists are meaningless? Because if you can, maybe I'm missing the whole point of the game of basketball.Sorry, I guess that wasn't a very good joke
  20. I am pretty sure at this point I would be content in trading Corey Hart to the Giants for Jonathan Sanchex and a reliever/prospect and then signing Dunn for 3 years/30 Million. I think we would be adding at least another $6M on the payroll but I think the team would be substantially improved if that were to happen. If Dunn is available for less than $10M a year, I think Melvin has to explore as many options as possible to clear up a little payroll for him.
  21. I am buying a house and I am switching to Dish Network so their Brewers service better be sweet or I will be P.O.d. I took Dish over Direct TV simply because it was cheaper. I will pay about $100/month for HD Dish Network and AT & T internet, right now I am paying $120 a month to Charter for non HD cable and internet. I guess I don't anticipate any problems. I was assured that when the Brewers broadcast a game in HD that it will be carried by Dish.
  22. I was expecting a higher number from Fielder. I think Prince would win in arby though so if Melvin can get him to sign for 7.2 or so I would do it.
  23. Yeah But Redd has a fallaway triple teamed jumper every 12 minutes so that more than offsets those meaningless stats
  24. I also saw that. It kind of suprised me that Ben is still trying to get a multi year deal despite a down market. If he were really confident in his health he would take a 1 year deal with a a player option for the 2nd year and hope the market is better in 2010. This just smells of Ben getting as much money as he possibly can because he really isn't sure he can hold up. He could easily do a 1 year $10M deal this year, pitch well and not get hurt, and then get 4 years and 50 million after next year.
  25. Dunn has said that he won't play 1st so either we trade Fielder and move Hart/Braun there or we just trade Corey Hart or Mike Cameron. I would be hesitant to trade Cameron because a Dunn, Braun, Hart OF might be historically bad.
