  1. A couple of points... I don't think anyone here thinks JE is a bad rather offensive catcher, rather, he could be a better offensive catcher if he could take some walks and have a better OBP. OBP generally doesn't slump, and guys like Estrada that virtually have BA=OBP, when they slump, it gets real bad. To address the original poster there are definitely a lot of times where Yost will not make a batting switch in the later innings with Mench/Jenks. Mench faced Sosa early enough in the game where Randolph would not have brought in a LHP to face Jenks, -- however, we have 13 pitchers now, so we have lost a bench player, and Yost will not use Miller/Estrada as a PH -- so that may be why Jenks was not entered into the game. This illustrates though how a platoon at a offensive position (corner OF) can be very inefficient. I do think though that there are plenty times where Jenks/Mench do not get lifted because of their veteran status with Ned.
  2. My thoughts -- This is different from the Cubs situation. The Cubs fight happened earlier in the year and between 2 veteran players. The Brewers situation happened between a manager and a kid that is playing in his first full season. I wouldn't expect that this would be a positive catalyst for this team. Estrada is what he is. Yost cannot make him run fast or throw hard, however IF this has anything to do with pitch selection one would hope that after 100+ games a manager could coach a catcher into calling a game like he wants it to be called. I am not sure what the "waiting for Yost" comment means or what context it was extracted from, but I think that there is a presumption about Yost and "intangibles", when we really have no evidence that he is a good or bad clubhouse/personnel manager, and we probably shouldn't assume he is or isn't going to make the right moves behind the scene. (edit: formatting repair --1992)
  3. I think the jury is still out -- In 2006 we took some hits to our rotation that were unrecoverable. I think signing Suppan was better than offering arby to Ohka, and Suppan hasn't been any worse than Doug Davis.
  4. I am not a big Yoster for sure -- I am pretty dubious that he will be fired though, even if the Brewers are sub .500. I guess I haven't given much thought as to his replacement. Dave Bristol is about the only Brewer manager I can think of that had previous MLB experience as a manager. I think the one difference is that a lot of manager candidates would love to get their hands on this nucleus of players, where in the past that probably was not the case.
  5. My wife's grand-uncle died on that ship -- My wife's grandma and cousins go to the reunions that they have. I think he died in the sinking of the ship though. -- It was quite the ordeal for certain.
  6. If Fielder would have jacked another home run and we ended up winning no one would talk about "wasting innings". Sure they would have -- I guess thought the question I am posing -- is -- "If Manny Parra has limited innings, would you rather see one 6IP relief performance or multiple 1-2 IP performances" I am not really second guessing what happened last night, rather discussing a thought I had when Ned made the comment (through Bill) about "managing for 162".
  7. Parra pitched an incredible game. The reality is though, is that he will not be on our roster once the team shuts him down, regardless of his performance, and the time for trading Cappy and Bush has passed. What I mean is that I think I would have rather had Dessens pitch last night, and wave the white flag, and saved those 6IP that Parra gave us for other games down the road.
  8. Yeah -- I still am rolling dirty with my Zen Jukebox from 2002. (20GB). I bought my kids 3 Creative Labs devices -- and they use, abuse and love them Another note -- if you are into Audio Books, you cannot use Ipods or Zunes to download them from your local library (in a lot of cases).
  9. By the way -- what is that playoff predictor website you guys look at? Thanks!
  10. Soup -- that was the USS Indianapolis -- this was referred to in Jaws. My wife had family on that ship, so it is always of interest to her. I thought it was a pretty good show. It wasn't a hokey made for TV deal, like the one that was made 10-15 years ago with Stacy Keetch and that Caruso guy from NYPD Blue. Basically it was a show about this investigative expert who went and examined all the data, overlayed it with shark behavior and tons of interviews with the survivors, and painted a different picture than perhaps has been sensationalized by the movies. I thought it was a bit drawn out -- and some of the reenactments were a bit much, but it is very typical Discovery channel programming, which if you like -- this will not disappoint you.
  11. Sure -- I wonder though if Dessens is better than Wise in the "right here and now". As a sidenote -- I heard Bill mention that Ned talked to him about managing for 162 -- i.e. long-term managing -- and I have to wonder if using Parra (assuming Parra is on a IP limit) for 6 IP in last nights game was a wise thing to do. It seems to me that I would rather have had those 6IP used in 3 games in August, or perhaps in a start. Dessens seems built to pitch in a game like last night, where your starter gets chased early. Perhaps Yost thought the Brewers would continue to hammer Perez. -- just an observation
  12. Sure -- another salad tongs mishap, have Bill Castro kneecap him in the locker room, STD, it really doesn't matter -- I really think Spurling is more valuable than Wise right now today. This sort of thing probably should have been done to Weeks as well, rather than sending him down outright.
  13. I hope Wise goes on the DL.
  14. I agree with you Luke -- so I guess thats a no.
  15. Hmm.. I suspect Noah was distraught over the loss of humanity, but there had to be a part of him that was saying, "sucks to be the guy who was laughing at me when I was building my ride in the rain" -- he was after all only human.
  16. Look dude, we are all Brewers fans, none of us our happy we have relinquished our lead to the Cubs. We all look at the information/data that was presented to us in Apr.-July, and we all interpreted things differently. Some of us found reasons to be optimistic, some us found reason for concern. Both groups have stated their cases for months now, and it has been pretty hard for all of us to watch the Brewers crash and burn. For example, I do not believe that the Brewers have the wherewithal to run with the Cubs -- that is what is in my gut, if that makes me less of a fan in your opinion, all I can do is apologize, but I have listened to your arguments and I have found them unconvincing -- that is to not to say they are wrong or bad, just that they haven't swayed my way of thinking. At the end of the day - I am not sure there is a right or wrong in the "sense of urgency/relax" debate. All I know is that the product on the field and the results have sucked and I think it's very reasonable for people to react negatively to what has happened. I really hope you aren't embarrassed of elements in our fanbase because they do not subscribe to your point of view. or they don't react like you think they should. I know we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things, but I wouldn't dream of thinking anything like that about you. Heck, Blazer and I are probably as different as two cats can be, but I thoroughly respect who he is as a fan and contributer to baseball. I sort of think of BFnet, is like the big room we all are watching the games together in. There are always dudes that jump up, high five, scream, and knock over the nachos, and then there are the dudes that do nothing -- that's more a function of how our brains are wired up than anything else. It is not as if one group has achieved higher fandom status than the other. You get more bees with honey -- and you probably aren't going to make a lot of friends administering nutshots in the vent thread.
  17. I agree we are stuck with him through 2007, I wouldn't want him fired mid-season unless the Brewers went on a 15 game losing streak or something catastrophic.
  18. Our family watches a lot of the shark week programming. Recently my wife and I watched the show about the USS Indianapolis, which of course is alluded to in Jaws.
  19. Which in turn should set him up for about 155 to 160 or so innings next year. That translates into about 25 starts i think. But another great outing like last night and it will be hard for Melvin to shut him down without some backlash. I don't think, given Parra's history there is any way he doesn't get shut down -- he is just way too valuable.
  20. I am a pimp for Creative Labs products -- I hooked my mom up with the Vision Zen (30GB) -- so she can download audio books and listen to them -- she is about as competent with electronics as Gilligan and she loves it. She got it on sale at Circuit City for $199.
  21. our opponents, the best team in the NL Wait, I thought we were the best team? -- Good job Ned. Hey Blazer!
  22. We do still technically own first place but we are tied. Since we have more wins though I say we are in first. Generally Speaking, you want to look at the losses -- the team with the least losses is probably ahead.
  23. Have you been reading the IGTs lately? Sure -- I go through them each early AM, mining for information. I fail to see how 20 comments in a row about Weeks being terrible is necessary or valuable. I don't think it is valuable -- but if it is the emotion and reaction of 20 different people, it is what it is. The simple fact that some people think they are bigger than the site and should do whatever they want is infuriating. I don't think anyone in this thread feels this way. I would ask, have you ever modded a forum or game of significant size? I am pretty sure I have plenty of applicable experience. For example, I hate hiaku night, pink IGT night, and so on... therefore I don't participate. Sure -- Though in your example an option exists to participate or not. If you have, I find it hard to believe that there were times when you didn't find the job taxing and find the constant hassles sucking some of your enthusiasm for what was going on. Sure, as I stated before, I am quite positive headaches exist, however, those who accepted a commitment should fulfill it with minimal whining. The site growing is a good thing, but there are problems associated with it, and regardless what we think, it's still Brian's site to do with what he wishes. Agreed, but I am not sure what that has to do with the price in tea in China. I don't think people were complaining about what happened rather the explanation that was given.
  24. Look at how happy Ben Sheets is here: Looks the "before" picture for when Sheets either breaks his forearm on someones head, or explodes his kidneys jumping.
