  1. I thought that if a team offers arbitration to the player, the player is guarenteed to get a raise from his previous year's salary? This is not true -- However, players rarely see a reduction in salary when they go to arbitration -- players may lose their case, but generally they end up making more than they did the previous season -- just less than they hoped for the future season.
  2. What was the deal with Vargas last year, the Brewers had to pay him a certain amount when they cut him before the season. Would they have owed less, or nothing if they had cut him earler? There is a date during ST when if a player gets cut before that date, they get 30 days termination pay, if they cut him after that date they get 45 days of termination pay, which I assume is a prorated amount from the arbitrated salary --- so it would be non-trivial.
  3. I do think he'll land a major league deal some place because he won't cost any team a pick. I agree 100%. I think some team will offer him a one year deal in the 2-3M range with tons of incentives. Offer Gagne 1 year/5 mil and I'm pretty sure he'd accept it. I think that would be a smart decision. That's not quite how it works... We would submit $5M and Boras would submit $8M and then an arbiter would pick one salary or the other -- that is the risk. Now, we could offer Gagne Arby's and then work out a deal before a hearing of course... Also I would much rather offer Gagne arbitration than sign Fuentes. He'll probably get a four-year deal, which is something I really want no part of for a reliever. Why not? -- Fuentes is a solid pitcher.
  4. I'd let Shouse go. Why overpay even a nickel for him when he's so easily replaceable by minimum salary guys? Agreed. He is 40 years old. We should be able to scrape up a LOOGY somewhere, like when we got him.
  5. Thanks Toby... I wanted to see your reasoning here.... And would Gagne even accept arbitration being a Boras client? Typically Boras's clients do not have the extreme injury or extreme success/failure history that Gagne has. I would hate to try and outbluff Boras based on what he has done in the past with other clients. I believe Gagne is worth a 1 year/$5 mil deal. I don't. I have a hard time believing he could get anything more than a 1yr 2M contract from any other team. I certainly would concede he may be better in 09 than he was in 08, but I really don't think there will be much demand for his services at $5M. Say, they go to arbitration and Gagne comes up with an $8 mil number and the Brewers come up with a $5 mil number. I can't think of a time where a arbiter gave a player a 50% paycut. I tend to think that if an arbiter would have to choose between 8 and 5 -- he would choose 8. I think that the biggest risk, is monkeying around, trying to get an Arby's pick, and then losing out on a guy like Fuentes, because we have $8M tied up in Gagne. I certainly see the reasoning in your post though Toby, and I agree that Gagne is the most interesting Arby's item on the menu.
  6. Second, Gagne would be paid quite a bit less than he was in '08, and may well have better results. I would like you to expound on this please.
  7. I would like to express my gratitude to the universe and those that control it for Homer.
  8. eh, they're not china dolls. Ben Sheets would probably died in this accident.
  9. Hitler actually runs a web-board moderation academy. Many of the BF.net are honored graduates.
  10. 4 inches here in the R10. Bah.
  11. Trick or treat Smell my feet Give me something good to eat... I like pie
  12. yeah Henry Jordan is tough
  13. Keith Hernandez and Don Mattingly are both shorter than Mat Gamel. Steve Garvey is probably 2 or so inches shorter than Fielder and was considered the best fielding 1b in the mid-70s before Hernandez really hit the scene. Seeing as Gamel's biggest weakness to date has been related to his throwing, I am 100% confident he could play a better 1B tomorrow than Prince. I don't disagree with this statement -- however I think Gamel's height advantage has little to do with it.
  14. if a move for ryan is needed, why don't put him back at third? Braun was literally the worst 3rd baseman to ever have a bubblegum card. His days of playing 3rd are long over.
  15. I didn't even realize that Guitar Hero had a drums option, I don't understand why GH puts the cymbals where they did -- I think only the drummer from DEVO would find them useful. RB's cymbals seem to be in more traditional locations. However, after further research. I have seen other release dates listed (12/17 and 12/22). I know for the WII you can buy the drums/guitar/mic/game separately on Dec. 17th, and then the $180 bundle is available on Jan. 5th -- perhaps it is something similar for the PS2. From what I can tell, RB has a more vast offering of music than GH, including some Tull.
  16. I thought the funniest part about last nights episode was the opening and Michael's reaction to seeing Toby again. My wife and I were cracking up at that. Michael's hatred of Toby is pretty much always funny.
  17. With his arm, I would consider him in rf more than I would in cf. I think he could be better than Hart in rf. I agree with PrinceEatMeat -- and especially the above -- I think Braun could play CF in a pinch, but I don't think he has the instincts or skills to play it well. I do think he has a strong enough arm to play RF, and could be a very solid RF. Initially I thought Hart could be a great CF, but I was not impressed with Hart's fielding at all this past season. I think Braun ultimately will be used like Jenkins was, where depending on who the other OFer is, Braun will play one of the corner OF spots... If in 2 years the Brewers acquire a Carlos Lee type of player, I think Braun will play RF, if the Brewers acquire a guy like Jeff Francoeur, then Braun will play LF. I just don't get the sense that Braun will ever have the instincts and quick reaction to hold down CF. I do think though that he could become a very solid corner.
  18. Are there recent examples of Yankees who undeservedly went into the HoF? Not really -- Rizzuto for sure -- I was never big on Catfish Hunter, either -- but he was as famous as an Athletic.... Yet the biggest Yankees of the 70s, (Munson), and 80s/90s (Mattingly) are not even close. It's not like the HOF is littered with undeserving Yankees -- the team I would guess has the most undeserving members would be the Giants or maybe the Cardinals -- and that had nothing to do with the writers.
  19. More than a bag of balls to the right team. (Nice touch on the pink balls, FtJ.) these balls never lose their bounce -- and its a nice bag as well!! We could mine a nugget from that, I guess. Dude..., the balls NEVER lose their bounce!! That's infinite bouncitude x12 -- that's better than some Baltimore nugget.

  22. I see I can buy the components for RB2 before Xmas -- just not in the bundle.
  23. Is World Tour better than Rock Band?
  24. OK dudes.... I have a Rock Band wii question. I want to buy RB for my kids for Xmas... I notice that I have 2 options. 1.) Buy RB Special Edition for ~$99 today 2.) Wait until ~Jan. 5th to get RB2... for ~$189 Apparently the equipment is better/more durable. I really don't care about the song lists, but I am more concerned about the hardware... Is the RB2 hardware worth waiting for, and better than the current RB "Special Edition" package? Thanks!
  25. If you're going to give it to someone for the combination of defense and offense, then why not Joe Mauer, who had a wonderful season. Agreed -- I am not sure what is more valuable than a catcher who wins batting titles.
