  1. .....and not be real thrilled about pitching in that home park. Yeah -- that's a great point, however the Phillies have the #2 SLG overall, (#3 at home #4 on the road) -- so those dudes can mash regardless where they play. There is no question that the Phillies can help a pitcher rack up W's with run support. Moyer only gave up 20 HRs last year -- that's pretty good for his spot in the rotation.
  2. They'll give up more. Cabrera could be a nice addition and I think it's easy to forget how young he is. Cam is old and he WILL decline. We are only hooked into Cam for one year, I doubt he is going to decline that substantially.
  3. You hated Mota from the second that trade was announced, FTJ. Can you honestly say you're looking at this without bias? I hated Mota before the trade. He is a crappy pitcher.
  4. I got a clock-radio for a gift back in 1977. I remember listening to my first game on the radio, Brewers v. Blue Jays. I think though, the thing that really sparked my attention in baseball was Mark Fydrich -- him, and Oscar Gamble's afro.
  5. I think there is certainly better than a 50/50 shot that Moyer doesn't earn this $15M I think when you look at paying a guy like Gagne 10M for one year or Wood $20M for 2 years, Moyer seems like a lock to me. He isn't going to quit being left-handed. I don't know what he would lose at 46 that he wouldn't have already lost at 45. It seems very safe to me. I mean Moyer at $15M, or Suppan at $27M for the same 2 years?
  6. I bet they had a deal in place already
  7. He was a pretty good value last year -- $6M!
  8. But what about his history suggests this? As far as I can tell, all we 'know' is that a Igawa did well at Triple-A at the ages of 27 & 28. Exactly -- plus you don't need 71 innings to learn that Joe Winkelsas sucks -- especially at $4M/year
  9. Hideo Nomo had some initial success but quickly faded away. Nomo was a pretty solid pitcher. Not the greatest ever, but certainly decent.
  10. Considering that the Mets' bullpen was horrible and the big reason for why the Brewers made the playoffs and they didn't, I couldn't disagree more Mota is/was a bad pitcher. At $3.5M I am sure they could and did find someone to suck just as hard for less money. Only if his WPA wasn't better than the guys they replaced him with, right? The big reason the Mets BP failed was because Heilman and Sosa struggled, and they were constants for both 07 and 08. Mota was the worst pitcher in the Mets BP in 2007, it made sense for them to release him, or jettison him somehow. Getting some chumps to pay his salary was a coup on their part. The guy I can best tell replaced Mota was Duaner Sanchez, and he pitched about as good as Mota did -- for 1/4 the price.
  11. Or leave the second "e" off the end of Wookiee, or leave the third "c" out of Chewbacca Moving Hawing to my enemies list..... The Minnesota schools are D2, so many Wisconsin kids go there for football and basketball. Wisconsin usually has nationally contending team for Div III.
  12. The plows here seem to only be dropping sand. They grind up lava rock actually. Am I wrong in remembering that WI has a salt-alternative (as in, more eco-friendly)? When my family moved to OR back in 1987 -- the one thing I noticed was the amount of older cars on the road -- apparently the salt was so hard on cars in WI.
  13. Man, if you ever want to get a Star Wars freak to start foaming at the mouth, use the terms "wookie" and "chewbaca" interchangeably.
  14. There must be 20 CF'ers that fit between Cameron and Cabrera. I dunno about 20 -- that's a good question though, I'd bet you'd be hard-pressed to get 20.
  15. So the Estrada trade was a bad trade? That is news to me. Seems like it worked out alright for the Crew. I think it worked out better for the Mets.
  16. Joey Gathright steals bases at a 74% clip. If the benchmark is that 66.7% is the break even point, he's stolen a career 78 bases, is it really that much of a value? No, I agree with you -- all I am saying is that the dude has wheels, moreso than TGJ. TGJ never stole bases in MILB, Gathright racked up some good totals in the minors. I've watched him in the majors and in the minors, and I'd really say that his defense is Cameron-esque. If you mean Kirk Cameron, I would agree with your astute observation, if you mean Mike Cameron, clearly you are insane. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I don't see Gathright being any better. I mostly agree... If you look at the math, it clearly shows the following. Mike Cameron > Melky Cabrera > Gathright > Roomba > TGJ.
  17. The pick from last year is protected. The Yankees get one first round pick no matter what. Thanks for the correction.
  18. Like a slap to the face from Winter saying "wake up man, enjoy your home.... spend time with loved ones... be awesome to each other." And I said, "thank you Winter, you are wise." I got the impression that Winter was saying to me "I hate you, your knees suck, your house is poorly insulated."
  19. Actually the blog is correct -- at least mostly, -- I would have said "The Brewers are guaranteed to get A Yankees 1st round pick" rather than "The Brewers are guaranteed to get THE Yankees 1st round pick". What a lot of people are forgetting, is that the Yankees have two first round picks in 2009, as they get a comp. pick for not signing their dude in the 2008 draft. EDIT: It seems as if Haudricort is oblivious to the fact the Yankees have 2 first round picks. I don't think the comp pick is protected, as they are both well after pick #15. I could be wrong though. I think that the Nats get 2 picks as well, and both of their picks are in the top 10, so they both may be protected.
  20. Sheets and his agents have all the medical information everyone else has. They still decided to decline arbitration. Good point. I would also go a step further to say, that Sheet's agent would have made some preliminary phone calls to get some type of idea of the market demand for Sheets. My guess with Tex, Burnett and CC (up until recently) being still on the FA table, teams wanted to see what happened first with those guys. To argue against Russ's point, about the only thing that makes sense, is that Sheet's doctors probably look at the "x-rays" more optimistically, and the team's doctors take a much more cautious approach. Perhaps Sheets will need to submit himself to physicals and/or workouts. Mostly though, I just think Sheets wasn't the biggest FA, and would probably not be signed until some of the bigger ones set the bar.
  21. Burnie, thanks for the explaination.....but I still don't understand. So there are two Division I's?? Yes -- There is 1A -- which is Big Ten, Pac 10, SEC, ACC, etc. and then 1AA 1AA teams would be "Big Sky" like Montana, Idaho -- "Ivy League" like Cornell, Princeton DeVry, "Colonial" -- James Madison, Delaware, etc... "SWAC" -- Grambling, Jackson State, etc... "Southern" -- Appalachian St., The Citadel, etc... A lot of 1A teams will schedule a 1AA team as a NC game -- especially since most teams now play 12 games instead of 11, and had to scramble to schedule teams these last few seasons (that is why UW ended up playing Cal Polygon). Most 1A conferences though penalize teams for playing 1AA teams in tiebreakers... For example if Michigan is 12-0 and Wisconsin is 12-0, if Mich beat a 1AA team as a NC game, and UW beat 0, UW would win the tie-breaker. Hope this helps.
  22. Of course all the schools are shut down tomorrow. And... I kid you not, ODOT released an official notice stating that if you want to drive on the highways, you HAVE to have your snow chains equipped. About 10 years ago, there was a huge ice storm in Oregon -- I had to catch a plane out of Portland, and took a shuttle from Corvallis up I-5. There were dozens of cars off the road, almost every minute you would see a car. No crashes, or fatalities, but cars littered everywhere. It looked like a bad M. Night Shamylan movie had happened. In Oregon when people start to skid, I swear they are taught to floor it.
  23. So Gwynn isn't fast and isn't a good defender? Right. Obviously he is not as slow as Fielder or a plodding catcher, but he will never be fast enough to steal bases. I have never seen a defensive metric to indicate that he is a decent OF. TGJ has good marketing people.
  24. He is fast and can turn a single into a double with ease. He has 1100+ MLB ABs and 30 career doubles, so -- no he really can't. To me, Gathright is just Tony Gwynn Jr minus a HOF dad. Gathright is fast, a good basestealer, and defender -- Gwynn is none of those things. Gathright also has some pretty decent MILB stats, Gwynn does not. That said, I wouldn't know why the Brewers would pursue him, unless he was a ST NRI and just wanted to see what he could do. I'd much rather have Gathright as my 5th OF than TGJ, but I would definitely opt for curtain #3.
  25. This is destined to not end well at all. I don't know about that... Here is the way I look at it... 1.) They won 89 games last year, in a very competitive division -- and finished 3rd -- they need to do something. 2.) They are opening a new stadium this April -- Having CC, and co. opening in that new park is going to be electric. 3.) CC is probably the best LHP in baseball -- even if he starts to decline, he still is going to be better than the Jeff Suppan's of the league, i.e. Mount CC has a higher peak and slower decline than Mount Suppan. 4.) If CC/Burnett get 95+ wins over the next 4-5 seasons, and get the Yankees into the playoffs those years, they can probably suck in their last years, and still have provided good value. The Yankees are probably trying to capitalize on their new stadium, etc... they will probably end up OK.
