  1. Some of the lousiest post quality on this board tends to land in the vent thread. There are lousy posts in every thread almost. I don't think the vent thread was any worse -- if you are truly looking at lousiness. If you didn't like the message in the vent thread, you could easily avoid it. The issue involved is that like the vents: post quality tends to go downhill as negativity goes up. You could say the same thing about as positivity and excitement as well. However, members can certainly address the negative without making a foray into obnoxiousness. Agreed, however, because a post is a vent, does not make it obnoxious. Wouldn't be easier to just delete and warn obnoxious posters? Yeah, that 200-page vent thread during the season is a shining example of that denial... 200 pages? -- Probably then the most posted to, and most read thread last year I would guess? Good Luck, in either case.
  2. What if they transplant his eyes with those of a serial killer?
  3. Gagne had a good year in 2007 so there was reason to believe he'd be good in 2008. I'd argue paying one year/ten mil for a good closer (which most thought Gagne was at the time of his signing) is more "shrewd" than paying 40+ for three or four years for a really good closer. I would argue against the Gagne signing being "shrewd" -- I think it was entirely a gamble -- I hear what you are saying, thank goodness we didn't hook into Gagne for 3-years, and I certainly agree with you there. I don't think Gagne had a good 2007, especially when you consider he missed almost all of the previous 2 seasons. I think the Mets signing K-Rod, is a safe hedged bet -- I think what DM did with Gagne, was a gamble, which is OK, some gambles pay off better than safe bets -- but I think DM has and probably will sign some RP to big contracts.
  4. All this talk about needing to rebuild the entire team is just going overboard. Right -- we weren't good enough to catch the Cubs last year, and probably won't be this coming year either -- but we should be in the WC race from start to finish.
  5. Pull off a trade with one of the Japanese teams, perhaps? Dude! Totally! -- Let's trade with a Japanese team and then move Braun to 3rd, and then redraft Gary Sheffield (before he became jaded to Milwaukee). I think that is our path to greatness -- Let's think outside the box, in fact so outside the box, we are doing things we cannot do.
  6. My Tivo has gone 811 days without making a call. I am curious to see when Tivo decides it is a fruitless endeavor.
  7. I think Homer does a good job for a local program. I don't mind him at all. I hate Cowherd.
  8. but that's still a lot of money to commit to a guy who may be declining. As Rydogg, points out he is likely entering his prime years. Objectively, I don't see any reason to think he is declining. Marcels projects a 3.27 ERA for 2009. He'll do that over something like 70 IP. We have been told many many times, ERA is not the best stat to monitor, and I am not the biggest Marcel geek -- but I am sure that Marcel didn't know K-Rod would be changing leagues, so I am sure that the 3.27 number needs to be adjusted. Here is the projection more robustly stated.... 66 IP 56H 27R 24ER 5HR 70K 29BB 1.29WHIP 3.27 ERA Here is what he did in 2008. 68IP 54H 21R 17ER 4ER 77K 34BB 1.288 WHIP 2.24ERA I don't see Marcel projecting any sort of skills decline, but perhaps K-Rod will be unluckier in 2009 than compared to 2008. The Hits/walks/Ks all are in line. Again, I don't think that if Marcel knew that he would change leagues, the projection would be different. Even acknowledging that those innings will be high leverage ones on average, is it a given that this is steal for the Mets? This isn't a steal, however I think it is a very sensible signing for the Mets. They need some BP help in the worst way, and they have some very favorable contracts -- I think they can spend a little more money on their BP. K-Rod is a young, special pitcher. I think getting a guy who just had 62 saves to agree to a 3 year deal is a minor coup -- especially when 5 year 75M contracts were expected. I think the Mets were shrewd here. Could they have tried to roll the dice with some $1-2M, type of arms? -- Probably, -- no doubt the Mets are hedging their bets a bit. I feel lucky we don't have a GM that wants to blow a chunk of change on the most overpaid FAs (closers). I think your feelings of luck are a bit unfounded and perhaps premature. DM offered a similar contract to Cordero, just last off-season, and I find K-Rod's deal more shrewd than the Gagne gamble (which was 10M/year as well). Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't end up giving $10/year to some reliever arm this off-season -- it ain't over yet. Again, I don't think this signing is brilliant or the signing of the year or anything like that, but I think the Mets suitably addressed a glaring need on their team.
  9. I think this guy is a Favre and is loving the spotlight and having a hard time figuring out where to go and what he is going to do after he signs and he isnt the top story any more. I don't know about this... Clearly, CC is trying to gain leverage by keeping as many teams in the mix as possible. CC has earned this attention with his great year last year, I don't blame him for wanting to maximize on his performance. I think most of this is more due to every blog/website trying to outscoop the other. 15 years ago we would have been content with daily or even weekly updates, but nowadays we require almost hourly updates as to where everything stands.
  10. eh.... We will probably get that Maxim St. Pierre guy or his Yankee equivalent... At this point, I'd be tickled to move the contract, especially if that makes something else happened.
  11. we got 8-10 inches up here. It's blowing pretty good here as well... Roads are not that bad, but probably should be avoided.
  12. I can't blame him for wanting to leave a situation where some fans feel that a September win counts more in the standings than an April win. No one feels this way -- People feel that getting a win in a playoff race in September is harder to get than it is in April.
  13. I know Joe Torre will make it in as a manager into the Hall of Fame but does his career warrant him to be in as a player also? I think they can consider both his career as a player and manager -- I suspect he will get in at some point.
  14. Judging by the girth in that photo I would guess that they are mostly rolling these days. BTO is still bringing it....
  15. I bet these guys rocked hard. Rocked? -- As in they still aren't rocking???
  16. They in fact do... Coming to a somewhat sold-out bowling alley near you.... THUNDERSNOW http://www.mulletjunky.com/webimages/Reign.jpg
  17. I am sure that modifying a nail gun to kill zombies in in the Zombie Survival Guide handbook. I don't want to modify stuff. I am not Mac Gyver, I want to buy a Zombie Nail Gun 3000 at Home Depot.
  18. I always have good ideas.... 1.) Use the elderly for space exploration. 2.) Deep Fried Pizza 3.) Lifetime Incarceration of Kevin Costner. 4.) An Olympic Event where you target shoot snowmobilers. 5.) Nailguns specifically designed for zombie combat and not carpentry.
  19. Tom Seaver would be in my top 5.
  20. they probably think CC will give them a discount. I dont think the SFG need to outbid the Brewers.
  21. The little guys that lived in Bert and Ernie's window sil? The Twiddlebugs. Oh the stories the Twiddlebugs could tell....
  22. The balls on that guy.....
  23. Jorge Juli-oh-crap Jorge Juli-oh-no George July.
  24. If Boras comes in asking for 11 million the Brewers should offer 5.5 million, because they'd win that arby case. Prince isn't getting more than 8-8.5 million. I disagree -- If $8.5M is the "right" salary and Prince was ~3M over, and the Brewers came in ~3M under -- the arbitrator is almost certainly to rule in favor of Prince.
  25. I am so glad this yard gnome is out of our division.
