  1. Nope -- He became the pitcher of record
  2. By walking Pujols, you put the winning run on 3rd, with no room to pitch around Ankiel. Pujols has a .304 average versus RHP's, while Ankiel has a .370 OBP vs. RHP's. Fair enough -- I had it in my head runners were on 2nd and 3rd.
  3. But in this case it meant putting the potential winning run on base, as opposed to having him have to earn his way aboard. ?? It was 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th -- the winning run was already on 2nd. -- Unless we are talking about a different time.
  4. I don't agree that you should IBB anybody. Guys get themselves out more than half the time at worst. If Pujols beats us, he beats us. There is a greater than half chance he makes an out. There is no reason to walk the guy. Giving an IBB to Pujols would not cost the Brewers anything, and set up the force at 2nd. While I will concede that Pujols stands a +50% chance of making an out -- the next non-Pujols batter has probably a greater chance of making an out. I don't like the IBB, but I think this is a case where it makes sense.
  5. at least Yost didnt run out of position players and have to use a pitcher, Brandon Looper to PH in the 10th inning like La Russa did. I wouldn't mind Yost using Yo or CC in a PH appearance in an extra innings game. Looper is a decent hitting pitcher. Batting Torres was dumb.
  6. He died after the shooting of the film
  7. What would you do? Ask Ned, do the opposite or consult Clucky.
  8. Was anyone weirded out by the Joker character being so dark in combination with the Ledger suicide? His death was ruled accidental --
  9. Could the roster move be McClung and Suppan switch places on the DL? I hope not. That means 15 more days of Mota. If McClung is truly hurt then of course he needs to go on the DL -- If Ned is just hiding McClung, while Bush makes his home starts, this seems really stupid. I just don't understand what is happening. Obviously either Bush/McClung needs to leave the rotation -- pick one, put the other in the BP and DFA Mota. If Yost truly believes that Bush can be used at home, send Bush to AAA, and call him up in a month.
  10. Home ERA: 1.64 (6 starts) Road ERA: 5.06 (3 starts) Would it make you feel better if Bush's home ERA was a respectable 4.50? Bush is not a great pitcher. He is going to get his ass handed to him from time to time. The Brewers played a lot of road games early this year, it only seems logical to me that if a pitcher started the season struggling, and his team played a lot more road games, that pitcher would accumulate some bad road starts. FTJ and end... I'm interested in hearing your take on this. I seriously don't know what to make of it, but it certainly does suggest that there may be something more than small sample outlier (results) to his poor pitching on the road. I have no idea. There may be a logical explanation -- but I don't think you change your methods until you identify a cause. Keep Bush in the rotation, move McClung to the pen, boot Mota. That seems to make much more logical sense to me than having 6 dudes in the rotation and a struggling pitcher in the pen. Agreed -- Greg Gagne told me though that he is struggling as well, and didn't appreciate being excluded by you....
  11. You're chalking that up to what, coincidence? Yes, coincidence and explainable phenomena.
  12. He's still over a run worse on the road. Perhaps -- but this argument is saying Dave Bush pitched poorly in Park A, therefore he will pitch poorly in Park B. Does Bush pitch poorly in every park that is not Miller Park? -- Of course not. Again, I can find odd splits for every Brewer this season -- it doesn't mean that moves should be made in each or even any of the cases.
  13. IMO naivin was jumping on you for your much more general comment of how the Brewers win in spite of Ned's idiocy. I was responding to another poster that wanted apologies to Yost if it works out. This is a bad idea regardless of the outcome, even if the outcome favors the Brewers. Please don't insult our intelligence by suggesting that Yost making this decision does not impact your feelings on it. It really doesn't. I'd find the idea of treating 20+ parks as one composite really silly. One of these guys is being pushed to the pen Why would Bush be allowed to pitch out of the pen on the road? I'm not sure you can conclude it is a bad idea based only on that, or how it is a misuse of data. Treating all parks as one composite, or making decisions like this based on small samples of data is a misuse.
  14. What about last season when he was also appreciably worse away from Miller Park? Those numbers are heavily influenced by a 1IP 9ER start in Cincy.
  15. Its an absolutely brilliant way to have your cake and eat it too. If they win, it'll be in spite of him. If the lose, it'll be because of him. I love it. I think this move is idiotic -- regardless of the outcome or who made the decision. I have made 3 posts in this thread showing why I think it is idiotic. I am sincerely interested in any sort of argument as to why a rotation platoon is a good move. It would be pretty easy to counter my arguments if one had the ability to do so -- otherwise back off from the tired idea that I need to scapegoat Yost. In the meantime, you'll have a convenient and obvious scapegoat if by some minute chance the Brewers don't manage to win the World Series. You really think the chances that the Brewers don't win the WS is minute? Do you really think that this idea even originated with Yost? Yes -- This is a very classic Yostian decision and misuse of data. Do you guys really believe that Yost makes a move like this on his own? Do you really think he hasn't run this by Melvin? I think these questions are fair. I suspect that DM has signed off on this, and if he has he should be fired as well. Do you really think that Melvin hasn't run it by his own stat guys and scouts? Again, this is fair -- I am sure that stat guys have weighed in on it, and either they are being ignored, or their opinions are being misused.
  16. Great trade. Trading for Brian Roberts would have cost good prospects at the very least and signaled the team had given up on Rickie Weeks. I think trading prospects for Brian Roberts even good ones, is not necessarily a bad thing -- and I think that this trade has absolutely signaled that the team has put Weeks on the hot seat at the very least. I am not buying the idea that we made this trade to upgrade Dillon's 20 ABs per month -- we made this trade because the Brewers need better production from 2b. Instead, they get nearly the same player for little cost who can help the team this year, and may be a valuable, inexpensive bench player should he be interested in signing for next year. Roberts is a MUCH better player than Durham -- Roberts is a top four 2b in OPS in MLB -- Durham is a bit below that (#8 which is not bad), Roberts can steal bases, has more power, and plays much better D. Durham would cost us about $6M next year -- I'd rather have Roberts for $8M, or even Counsell at $3.4M for that matter. Should also be a good mentor for Rickie. Weeks is 25, and probably is past the point of mentoring. I am not sure what Durham can mentor that Counsell hasn't. I think the only mentoring Durham will do, will be saying -- "Hey Rickie, watch what I do, as I get more and more of your starts"
  17. I think there must be a better analogy than that for this situation. Perhaps. The point remains, though that the Brewers are able to win games, in spite of Yost's idiocy. I can find crazy splits on just about any Brewer: Sheets -- 6.43 ERA on turf Hart -- .486 OPS with Bases Loaded Cameron -- .291 OPS with a guy at 3rd. Counsell -- .978 OPS against power pitchers Braun -- .440 OPS with only a guy on 1st. Prince -- .123 OPS w/o eating a cheeseburger etc. Anyway -- Bush (for a backend rotation dude) is pitching quite well recently, Suppan on the other hand, has a similar home/road split -- but is struggling as of late. Suppan is not going to the BP because of his salary though. We are starting McClung -- who could be used in our BP in the stead of Mota, while Bush has actually had a decent start in STL. It makes no sense to skip Bush at this point. It seems we are now burning 2 roster spots on pitchers we have no intention of using in STL (Bush & Mota) -- I suspect/hope Mota gets DFA'd when Suppan comes off of the DL -- and it seems like McClung could soak up the innings that Mota was previously getting. Our next 2 road series -- STL/ATL -- Bush pitched decent in both parks.
  18. Just parenthetically, does anyone remember Morgan finishing out his career in Houston, Philly, SF, and Oakland? I missed that completely in the early 1980's Yeah -- I sure do -- He played with a good Astros team, and then he played with the "wheeze" (as opposed to the "whiz") kids 1983 Phillies -- which were included former Reds, Rose and Perez. He had a great year for the Giants as well (for an old guy). He was a really great player.
  19. 1) Nix never broke his hammate, or had any serious injury. Nix tore his labrum in 2005 and was shut down.
  20. Since he is a type B free agent a team does not have to give anything up to sign him, so is their any chance the Brewers get a draft pick out of him? We'd have to offer Durham Arby's, and he would have to decline it -- he would likely accept it -- therefore we aren't going to get picks in all likelihood.
  21. I'll ask you all to come on this thread in a month from now and apologize to Ned if it works No. Going to Vegas and betting the company payroll on black, has a ~50% chance of working, but remains a bad idea. The problems I have are.... 1.) We have noticed that Bush has pitched different on the road, but we do not know what the cause is. We should understand the cause (if there is one) before applying solutions. 2.) Dave bush struggled a lot in the beginning of the season, most of our early games were road games. If Bush was struggling with his mechanics, he very likely would have done so on the road. 3.) If Bush truly struggles out on the road -- you cant let him pitch out of the BP either. This means Bush is burning up a roster spot to only pitch at home. 4.) There is a whole aspect of practical application, throwing McClung in and out of the rotation. 5.) As I have said before "the road" is a composite of 15 stadiums, I could see a pitcher being a bad match for one specific park, but all 15? -- Dave Bush is going to struggle in Petco, and Great American? -- Does not compute. 6.) Suppan has similar splits to Bush road v. home If Bush truly does have road WHOAS, then I think the solution would be to put Suppan in rotation and move Bush out, and let Bush pitch only out of the BP at home -- which would probably be a poor use of a roster spot.
  22. Wasn't it about this time last year when we were saying the same thing about the Brewers??? Last year was more about the Brewers imploding than it was the Cubs surging.
  23. The Giants don't schedule the games, do they? I think they decide whether a game is a night game or a day game (within some guidelines I am sure).
  24. Mike Cameron has received a lot of flak this year from fans and the media. I think most of it comes from him being miscast as a #2 hitter earlier in the season, and people believing that just because he's a CF and doesn't look like a slugger, he should be a high-OBP guy. Cameron rightfully deserved some of the flak because he had a wretched May (.212 .262 .451 .713), and his June was nothing terribly special either (.203 .324 .475 .799), so up until July, Cameron really didn't give anyone a lot to talk about -- of course his July has been torrid, (.306 .432 .583 1.015) which makes his overall season look a lot better than it was at the end of June. I think looking at Cameron's OBP and being critical is pretty fair -- and that is a concern that follows a number of Brewers throughout the year. I think he can do better than his current .237 BA/.329 OBP -- I think he is much better player than those numbers. If he continues to suppress his K-rate from May-June he should have a fine season. I don't think there is a person on this board that thinks Cameron is anything but a substantial upgrade over some our recent past CFers. I know I am constantly amazed at his ability to go back on the ball. He has made some costly mistakes -- however that should probably not happen in the future as well.
