  1. As Briggs hints at, the odds of Maddux or especially Wolf being any better than Carlos or Bush/McClung is tiny. Right, but the upgrade of Bush/McClung over Mota/Gange is huge
  2. how do you find that happy medium of "abused enough to keep bullpen scrubs out of the game but not enough to injure them?" Happy Medium = My Arm hurts - one pitch.
  3. Shouse is letting more inherited runners to score
  4. I personally don't find the difference between 10-20 more singles disappointing enough to give Cam a grade as low as 'C-'. I sure do -- Cam has 50 hits, 20 more singles would be a 40% in production -- that's significant. He has hit less struck out more, I think C- is fair
  5. If he's 'below what he could do', though, wouldn't that just mean that he's below an 'A' grade? Absolutely not, I'd reserve an A grade for Cameron if he would have had a .320 BA and .900 OPS (or something like that much better than I had hoped) B/C is the grade for what I expected. I would tend to agree with TWR Red flag. I would tend to agree with TWR (feeling dizzy here...), in that a 35-y-o playing at or above career norms appears better than an average performance. I expected more out of Cam, I think he has been marginally disappointing.
  6. I hate the idea of trading Weeks right now because his trade value is at an all-time low. Agreed -- however, (as fondy points out), Weeks value could get lower, and that is the big gamble I guess. It seems every team has a disappointing/enigmatic player that perhaps we could trade Weeks for.
  7. So you think a 35 year old player should go way above his career averages? Never said that. I certainly don't think Cameron should fall apart at 35 though. "C" is an average grade, Cameron is below what he could do IMO, thus C-.
  8. As I pointed out in another topic, he is 4 hits shy of batting .250 with a .336 obp. Well if he gets those hits I'll raise his grade -- but he didn't.
  9. Cameron has an .801 OPS this year if you haven't noticed. I have. I think that is below what he should bring to the table
  10. Assuming 1.) You don't want to hurt CC or Ben this year 2.) The Brewers are not going to sign either this off-season, My philosophy dictates that we didn't trade Matt LaPorta so Mota and Gagne can pitch more innings the rest of 2008. I'd abuse CC and Ben's arm to the point that they are still effective in Sep/Oct, yet we keep our BP clowns from heading out into more games.
  11. Here is my grade based on my expectations. Fielder -- B- His D has gotten worse. Weeks -- D Weeks is not playing well Hardy -- B Solid year so far. Hall -- F Very disappointing year for Bill Hall. Braun -- B+ Good year for Ryan Cameron -- C- Needs to hit better Hart -- B I think he could play better D, esp. his OF throwing Kendall -- B+ Unspectacular at the plate, way better than advertised behind it. Bench (Dillon/Counsell/Kapler/Branyan) B Probably won some games for us. Sheets A- Solid Year Suppan C- Needs to pick it up Bush B- His grade is rising, Yo/CC -- INC McClung -- A- He isn't the best pitcher, but he has really taken advantage of his opportunities. Villy -- C- A Disappointment since he could hang in the rotation. Shouse -- C Needs to keep inherited runners from scoring -- much worse this year Mota F -- Should have just DFA'd Estrada Gange F -- Blech Torres B+ -- Another better than expected player. Riske D -- Much worse than I anticipated, may regret multi-year deal. Parra C+ -- Decent enough year -- needs not to burn so many pitches in early innings.
  12. Who in the heck is Rick Reilly anyway? He had a pretty good career writing for SI, and was one of, if not their most prominent writers.
  13. Seriously, Do you guys expect to see CC Sabathia pinch hitting for us? I wouldn't be a fan of CC running the bases
  14. As sad as this sounds, Weeks is still our best option to lead off right now based on the fact that he can only improve with that horrid BABIP. Gambler's Fallacy alert
  15. I just don't see how this is going to work, in terms of their bullpen availability. It seems like the bullpen would be half an arm short because they periodically would be getting ready for, or resting after, their starts. Here are a few problems... 1.) Didn't we have the most road games in the NL in the first 80 games? -- If so McClung would get a lot less starts. 2.) What do you do when you have a 10 game road or home stand -- and then go the on the road or come home. 3.) "The road" is a composite of 15 parks. I could see maybe singling out one or 2 parks that Bush may really struggle in, but I don't see the logic in saying "Bush sucks on the road", which means the same for a park in SD, and the park in Cincy.
  16. I understand that many of you think it's completely unnecessary, Maybe, however everyone here is pulling for you... Good Luck!
  17. Here are some my thoughts... (crappy = 5.00+ ERA) 1.) Adam Eaton, was one of the worst regular starters in the NL last year (30 starts 6.29 ERA). He won 10 games last year even with that cruddy ERA. This stems from a couple of things, a.) Even the worst MLB teams win 70 games a year. That means that a 30 game starter can expect to see 8-12 wins a year. If you look at any year, and pitchers with ERA's over 5, you will see that a lot of them get 8-12 wins a year. b.) A pitcher with a 6.00 ERA does not give up 4ER in 6IP in every single start, they may give up 0ER in 6IP on Monday and 8ER in 6IP on Friday. In short if a 5+ ERA guy is pitching and getting 10-12 wins in a season -- that pitcher has probably beaten half the teams in the league. Every team has "crappy" starters, and crappy starters won 215 games in the NL last year. There were 785 losses in the NL last year. This means that a crappy pitcher wins a game almost 27% of the time. This means that almost one of every 4 games the Brewers lose, it will probably come against a "crappy pitcher". 2.) We call pitchers "crappy" at points in the season. In May Dave Bush was crappy -- but not so much in June/July. Defining a pitcher like Homer Bailey who has 13 career starts "crappy", is probably a big stretch as well.
  18. my vent is that this thread is misnamed. it should be called the knee jerk, emotional overreaction thread. boo hoo, we've had a rough stretch and we've only got the third best record in the nl. Last year we had the best record in the NL. Maybe we should start an "Everything is Sunshine and Lillies" thread for those people. Here would be a better title: -- Where ignorance is bliss, 'Tis folly to be wise. -- Thomas Gray. Come on now, if an MLB pitcher can't pitch in 2 separate innings he has no business being in the MLB. Amen. Gagne only pitched to one batter in the 8th and threw 4-5 pitches. If he can't finish out the 9th he needs to be DFAd ASAP.My My unique vent/question is why do we have to wait for Suppan to get healthy in order to move out Mota (or any BP albatross)? Why can't we swap Mota out and then make an independent move when Suppan returns.
  19. At what point do you just cut your losses with Gagne? 2 months ago.
  20. I heard on the radio after Bush's last start that Yost hinted at platooning McClung and Bush with McClung starting on the road and Bush at home. If this ended up being the case, how do you handle each of them in between starts where their counterpart is starting? I'd tell them their manager is a dipwad -- this is creative, yet Yostingly moronic. I would be all for pushing McClung back to the pen and sending Mota to the DL or giving him the ol' DFA. I think it is pretty clear our BP needs a lot of help.
  21. Then it's probably for the best that this involved brwrsfan's in-laws (to be), and not yours. I am sure Al was speaking in generalities and he is not actually bothered by this specific scenario. I certainly find it non-typical to buy a house with someone and then ask their parents for permission to be married -- To each their own and all of that.... but I get how people are going to see this differently than others. I am curious, and I do not mean this in a snarky way in the least bit, did you ask her parents about buying a house before you did? Parents and in-laws need to know their place, and I am always super cautious about involving mine in any aspect of my home/domain.
  22. Rick Manning for Gorman Thomas ranks up there for me. Sean Berry was a horrible signing.
  23. If the Brewers are "going for it," it's tough to ignore Gamel's bat in September. Barring injuries, I think the only call-ups you are going to see, are players that will help in later inning substitutions/double switches/pinch-hitting/etc.... This means a guy like Rottino who could catch should be called up, Stocker could be used to PR for Fielder/Rivera/Hardy, etc.. Nelson would be great (assuming some sort of pre-Sep. deal is not made), as a LH off the bench. Of course some pitching depth would be nice for the BP as well. Turnbow should be issued a restraining order not allowing him within 500 yards of Miller Park, as he has 37 BBs in 17 IP in Nashville. I don't think bringing up Gamel would be smart, he is still too rough to play 3b, and you certainly don't want him getting ABs at the expense of Prince/Braun/Hart. It doesn't seem sensible to start his arby clock, for a handful of PH ABs, where a guy like Brad Nelson could probably give you a similar result over 20 or so ABs.
