  1. No, I mentioned it in other threads. The only player rated higher than Prince was Pujols.
  2. It's not that they do, it's that they think the fan does. I was reading somewhere a few months ago that WWE is shortening their feuds to only like a couple of months (in some cases weeks) instead of the long 6+ month stuff because they think that's what fans want. They claimed that with the internet, new technologies, an "I want it now" attitude, etc., fans wouldn't be invested in long feuds. And I think that's just stupid thinking. To me, that's the same stupid reasoning that TV execs use to cancel shows that don't perform well right off the bat. They don't understand that most of the time, people need time to actually grow to care about something. It's just how things work naturally. The more time you invest in something, the more you care about it (usually). It takes time to develop, chemistry, see what works and what doesn't, etc. Unfortunately, all Creative cares about is short-term payoff and $$$. Sadly, until Vince is dead or incapacitated to where he can't control the company anymore, I don't see things changing.
  3. I'm pretty sure people have been saying Cabrera will DH with Prince playing 1B, at least for this year with VMart out. edit: Heyman says just changing roles while Knobler says 3B. It's all speculation until the Tigers actually announce their plans. I would probably at least see what Cabrera can do at 3B in spring training but if it ain't pretty, I wouldn't hesitate to move him to DH.
  4. You've said this many times. Haudricourt has repeatedly said "appeal" is his articles. Other media people have done so as well. It is basically an appeal. When Braun tested positive, he had a choice whether or not to appeal. If he just accepted the decision, a suspension would have been handed down. But he chose to appeal that decision. Just because there hasn't been an official suspension handed down doesn't mean there isn't an appeal. What it basically boils down to is semantics.
  5. The reason he will only be a spot-starter and guys like Peralta/Fiers are ahead of him on the depth chart is because they will be stretched out as starters (assuming they start in AAA). If the team only needs a start here or there, Estrada could probably give them 4-5 innings without being stretched out. However, if they need a long-term starter, I don't think they would plug Estrada in because he will likely have been pitching out of the bullpen the whole year. Now, if for some reason they keep him as a starter in AAA and Fiers makes the team, well then the situation would be the other way around.
  6. I don't think Estrada will be anything more than a spot-starter at this point. He will probably be the long-man. He's already 28 so I don't know what "potential" is left. I like him for what he is but Fiers and Peralta are probably ahead of him if we needed a guy in the rotation long-term.
  7. I agree but some people seem to think that with the improved defense Gamel will be adequate in replacing Prince. I don't think he will even come close.I don't think people are saying that. What they are saying is ARam + Gonzalez + Gamel is pretty close to McGehee + Yuni + Prince.
  8. I don't understand how anyone can believe any of the information that's coming out at this point. There is SO much conflicting information out there. You can't fully credit or discredit any media outlet including The Journal-Sentinal, ESPN, Dan Patrick, or your uncle's blog. If this debacle has taught me anything it's that the media will pounce on any little piece of gossip and spin it into a story if they think it will increase the number of hits to their website. No matter what the outcome of this appeal, I hope that MLB issues a statement of apology that any information was leaked.I agree here. That's why I get upset when people say "there's no way" Braun will win the appeal. The truth is, nobody knows what the facts are except MLB and Braun's team. I'm not even sure if the Brewers do at this point. Just because something has never happened before doesn't mean it won't. And just because someone says they are innocent doesn't mean they are. I think everybody just needs to sit back, relax, and wait until the final decision is made. There's really no point in speculating because we don't have all the facts. Sure it will suck if Braun is suspended but even if you consider him a 8-9 WAR player, we lose 2.5-3 wins without him. That isn't impossible to overcome and that's assuming Aoki is a replacement player. Realistically, everything isn't as cut-and-dried as that but it's also unrealistic to call the season over if we lose Braun for 50 games.
  9. I would say mid-80s to upper 80s. However, I recall most people last year saying mid 80s to upper 80s and they won 96. I don't really think there's much point in trying to project wins (other than for fun) because there is so much unpredictability over a 162 game season. Injuries could happen, guys could improve/regress, players could be added/subtracted, etc. Like you said, as it stands now, I would probably agree mid 80s but it wouldn't shock me if they were anywhere from 75-95 since so much can happen.
  10. There were a few different audio clips posted I believe. Not sure which is which though.
  11. I believe that this would be the best possible result for the Brewers, as it is the first unprotected pick, a.k.a. the best pick any team could have received from losing a Type A free agent. Not sure if that's correct or not. The new CBA only protects the first 10 picks. However, I think that might not go into effect until next year (along with the new arbitration average salary rule).
  12. Went in 2010 for August series. Loved the downtown area, especially the bars around Coors. There's a WI-themed bar called Swankys right by the stadium that I would definitely recommend checking out. Sveum was actually there serving drinks after one of the games.
  13. Here's the new rules on arbitration: Major league free agent compensation will be completely revised in 2013, with a team having to offer its former players who became free agents the average of the top 125 contracts -- currently about $12.4 million -- to receive draft-pick compensation if a player signs with a new team. It eliminates the statistical formula that had been in place since the 1981 strike settlement. So no way would the Brewers offer Marcum arbitration at that level for 2013. Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. That sucks, basically what it means to me is that it's going to be a lot harder for small market teams to get compensation for their very good, but sub-elite players entering free agency. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me especially for purposes of competitive balance. I actually think it's a lot better than what it used to be. The Elias Rankings were awful. Mediocre guys (can't remember any off the top of my head) were netting teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, etc. first and second round picks. In addition, only the top 10 first-round picks are protected.
  14. Sorry dude but I don't know how you can still be scared about Axford, especially over KRod. Axford's been solid for 2 years now and there's a reason teams weren't rushing out to sign KRod. I think KRod is a solid 8th inning guy and I'm glad we have him for this year but he's not what he used to be. That being said, it is nice to have a guy like him in case something happens to Axford. I just don't think anybody should be scared that Axford will suddenly implode after 2 great years (at least no moreso than any other player).
  15. Wolf has been pretty good overall since the second half of 2008, especially for a 4th starter. He's always given up baserunners but can usually work his way out of it. Sure it might catch up to him eventually but I would rather have him than our other options, at least for this year. As for Veras vs. KRod, I'd still take KRod. If you think Veras is so good he could pitch the 8th, wouldn't you rather have a shut-down 7th/8th/9th than just 8th/9th?
  16. The Twins did it.I don't think they gave Mauer that contract solely to appease the fans. Mauer had just won the MVP after finishing 4th the year before. You could argue that it was a bad contract (I think it was) but I don't see the reasoning being that they didn't want to lose fans. That might have factored somewhat but it wasn't the driving force. Mauer was still a very good offensive player at a position where there aren't many. I don't know what the overall budget for the team was at the time either but I would think that they were able move pieces around if needed to make the contract work. With Prince, the team would have to sign him first, putting them $30+ million over-budget and then have to try to sell off valuable pieces. I don't think the situations are comparable.
  17. Thanks for the good information Prophet. Interesting stuff. However, I do believe that Schlesinger is posturing with the above comment. Taken in context with the televsion comment about watching the game live and how important ratings are to the Brewers, I believe if Fielder were to sign elsewhere for a contract that the casual Brewer fan feels they could match i.e. 5 year $100m, 6 years $120m or 3 years $75m, those casual fans may be turned off and not watch or come to Miller Park. Being real, there is no scenario where the Brewers FO could justify to the casual fan not making a bunch of moves like the trading of Wolf, Hart or K-Rod to ensure Prince's return. Whereas the diehards like most of us understand a team with Prince and minus Wolf, Hart and K-Rod may actually be worse, I can't imagine that any of them even combined would bring the revenue like a Prince would. Until the day Prince signs with someone else, I will hold firm in my belief that if he signs for something close to the above 3 contracts, I think he plays in Milwaukee in 2012 regardless of the drastic roster manuevering it would take. I just find it hard to believe that management would knowingly make the team worse and/or cripple itself with a bad contract just to please the "casual fan." Fans ultimately want to see a winning team. If you put a winner on the field, the fans will come (unless you're in Florida).
  18. The truth is our backup plan has better career numbers than our starter. Gamel - .222/.309/.374/.684 Conrad - .229/.305/.428/.733 I can't believe people still use Gamel's MLB "career" stats to say that he sucks or won't be any good. If you don't think he will be good because you don't like his swing, mechanics, etc., fine I can understand that. I wouldn't even argue with you if you said you just don't like him. But you lose any and all credibility when your main support is less than 200 PA over 3 years while ignoring his .873 OPS over 3200 minor league PAs.
  19. I've had the limit thing pop up at the top of my screen saying I have 10, 5, 0 articles left and a thing telling me to subscribe but if I scroll down, all the stuff is still there. I don't really read any articles besides the blog so I don't know if that actually counts or if it's a bug or what. I use Chrome so maybe that is doing something?
  20. What do other players have to do with how Gamel performs? That argument doesn't make any sense to me. Plus, out of that group, only LaPorta was really considered a great bat.
  21. If we could get a Lawrie-type prospect for Marcum, I would think the Brewers would have already pulled the trigger. The reason they were willing to trade Lawrie last year was because Marcum had two years of control. And Lawrie's value has only gone up since then. And I highly doubt Wolf would bring much in a trade, for basically the same reason (though 1 year with an option but old and expensive). Guys with only 1 year left on their contracts usually bring in better hauls at the deadline anyway when teams are in a better position to judge how close they are to making a run.
  22. It won't happen, because there is always the possibility that "if" his asking price comes down, the Brewers could renew their offer of 5 maybe 6 years, and get creative (Melvins own words) and make room for Fielder. Unless the Brewers upper management comes out and says 100% without a doubt that they wont be re-signing Fielder we have to accept that there is a possibility that they could re-sign him. Do we even know if the Brewers pulled back their offer of 5 years 100-110 million? So far, I haven't heard them say that. We don't know the books, projected revenue, new TV contract details etc.. I think that it's likely he signs elsewhere because there is no reports that his asking price has dropped, but I guess we will see. I'm pretty sure Melvin has said that they won't be signing Prince. Their offer to him went out before KRod, Gonzalez, and ARam were locked up. We don't need to know the books, revenue, etc. to know that a team in Milwaukee cannot sustain a $120 million payroll.
  23. No. Leo Nunez is now called Juan Oviedo, at least on MLB.com.
  24. But isn't it ultimately about making the team better? I would think that trading Felix for Montero, Betances and/or Banuelos would make the team better than Pineda for Montero. They would also not have to pay Felix that big contract. I think most fans would rather go see a better team with younger prospects than a crappy team with a superstar.
  25. NO! They can't afford to give Prince $20+ million for even this year, let alone 5. People really need to accept this. Even IF Hart, Wolf, and KRod were traded, that would only help this year and part of next year. edit: Haudricourt says the same thing: “We’re way over what we projected our budget to be at this point,” said Melvin. “It’s over $100 million. We hoped to be in the low 90s.” Which is why I've been trying to convince skeptics that the Brewers wouldn't have the money to re-sign Fielder, even if he was amenable to it, which he and agent Scott Boras are not.
