  1. It's one thing to make the first out at home. It's another to send a guy who has NO chance of scoring. Just disgusting.
  2. Maybe we as fans are just so used to rooting for guys who had nothing to really be cocky about. Actually, I just don't like cocky professional athletes in general. I've prefered the kind of guy who doesn't take himself too seriously, which definitely isn't Braun. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I recall Hart joking about Braun being his biggest fan, or something to that effect. I agree that Braun isn't nearly as cocky as some other athletes, but he just isn't my thing. I am a big of him hitting bombs with a Brewers uniform on though, so you'll never see me cheer against him. I can appreciate why fans like the perceived loyalty of signing a that contact, I just don't really care about that kind of stuff.
  3. I certainly backed from my first post, which suggested that all he spouts are cliches. That isn't accurate., so let me try again. He's known to be cocky, so he's certainly not following the athlete rule book when he's making comments about getting thrown or saying his team is playing like crap. That's his pride talking but fans love that kind of stuff anyway, so it's only going to make them like him more. His comments about his teamates have been mild enough, though, so it's been pretty harmless... so far. And he's an intelligent guy, so he can avoid using the most standard cliches. Instead, he says basically the same things in a more eloquent manner. It makes for a good interview and again, fans love it. It just seems very measured, very PRish. So all I'm saying is that I see people here drool over the way he portays himself to the public but it just doesn't do it for more. If he wasn't a Brewer, I don't think I'd like him at all I may be in the minority but I don't think I'm the only one.
  4. He speakis his mind when his hubris is getting the best of him (which is pretty often). And I'm not sure what motivates him to start (mildly) criticizing his teamates but many fans love to hear that kind of stuff. Most professional athletes steer completely clear of it because they don't want to risk upseting the other players. I don't think Braun is some big jerk, or anything like that. I just think he's cocky and wants to give the fans what they want during interviews. He's done a very good job so far.
  5. Simmons from ESPN has an article out that reminded me of Braun. He talked about hoe carefull most athleted are when they talk to the media, talking in eternal PR cliches when they do. That's Braun. He says exactly what the majority of fans wabt to hear. As long as he continues to hit, I don't really care what he says but his public persona is just so contrived.
  6. I think that's as mild as taunting could ever get. I think it's kind of cute. There's nothing wrong with respectful bantering. I've had fun conversations with rival fans at Miller Park. Not often with Cubs fans though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. O great. Back to the sky is falling. I would die for an option to mute the announcers but keep the sounds of the park.
  8. 5 run lead. Finally. Now I don't have to hear Brian and Bill act like the Brewers were going to lose the lead at any second. Hard to enjoy a darn 3 run lead with their constant comments.
  9. I honestly can't follow almost any of your post. Now, I am no UZR exert, so that may part of the problem. Here's what I do know: First of all, here's a link to part 1: http://www.baseballthinkf...n/lichtman_2003-03-14_0/ For the record, he's not using Retrosheet data, just their zone definitions. I think you'll find little or no zone information in the retosheet files. He's always had to buy his data. I believe he used Baseball Info Solution's data, although I've seen it also calculated with another data set (STATS?). Second, I can't follow your logic that he's somehow subjectively weighting range and arm (is that what you mean by fielding?). He explains why he has to pull out the errors and how he puts them back in there. It sounds reasonable to me. Also keep in mind that this article was written in 2003. I'm sure he's refined his methodology since then. One of your major beefs is that UZR doesn't know where the fielder is positioned and I think that's a valid concern. MGL has tried to say that good positioning is part of being a good defender. I don't really but that, though, since a fielder's position is often dictated by the coaching staff. I guess we'll have to wait until positioning is recorded. Someday soon, I hope. All your other points... I just don't understand. I think you have some misunderstanding of how it works, especially considering some comments you made in the main forum.
  10. Hall is in obvious pain. I bet he comes out. It was a great play but one that Cameron might have just caught at his shoe strings. I wish Hall would have done that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  11. It wasn't spectacular, just very, very good. Belly flop dive coming right back to the infield. For a guy's first play at LF and the first in the OF since 2007, it was spectacular. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  12. It would a travesty to play Hall in LF and Gamel at 3B.
  13. UZR simply measures the numbers of balls in a defender's zone (breaking that zone into several smaller ones) that are converted into outs and compares that to league average. It takes into account how hard the ball was hit (in a rough sense) and where the ball was hit (a ball in the holes are rarely converted into outs, so the defender isn't expected to convert it). UZR ignores double play situations (only cares about the 1 out) and it doesn't measure the scoop skill of a 1B. A good or bad 1B can help or hurt the infielder.s numbers. A fast, aggressive CFer can hurt the corner OFers numbers. One season's worth of data really isn't very much. There lot's of issues, certainly. Still a wonderful resource to have. You just have to understand how to use it. And having a stat that misinforms is worse than no stat
  14. The initial post contained some interesting information but if it could change so muich after only 1 week, is was probably nothing to be worried about. The only thing worth getting too worried about in April are injuries and team record.
  15. The more pitches a starting pitcher throws and the more times a batter sees that pitcher, the more the advantage swings to the offense. I don't want guys like Looper and especially Suppan going deep into games very often, even if they have success early on. Managers make that mistake all the time. It could be a career 5.25 ERA starting pitcher but if he has had 6 good innings in a row, he'll trot him out there for the 7th. to face the top of the order, after already throwing 100 pitches.
  16. I've never had a problem getting a seat in or outside if I came early (45 min, maybe). We usually just come at game time and eat lunch inside. Often, a seat will then open up outside later in the game. For sold out games like this weekend, you can still get a table easy inside but the patio will be packed. It never cleared up on Sunday. I think the prices are pretty reasonable up there. Is the beer even bumped up from the normal prices? I love the food inside (never tried the buffet but they have a regular menu as well). I don't think anything is over $13. The food on the patio is different though (more simple). A couple years ago, there was some complaining about supposedly having to spend $20 an hour to keep your seat on the patio. You could buy a beer an hour and you'd be fine, however. They just don't want somone parking there for 4 hours with a bag of peanuts.
  17. If vets being better pinch hitters is a given, what is the magnitude of this effect?
  18. Short of an injury, players generally don't just fall apart for no reason. Their skills slowly build up and then slowly erode. Suppan has lost 1 MPH since leaving the Cardinals, so he's going to be hurt by that. He's also a couple years olderl, so that may effect other parts of his game as well (accuracy, pitch movement). Still, if he was a 4.5 ERA pitcher then, he's maybe a 5.00 ERA pitcher now. We shouldn't expect him to be a 7.0 ERA pitcher now, based on a handful of starts.
  19. But if it doesn't after another month what do you do? Keep him with the club but sit him down for awhile? I would think he would lose some playing time to Counsell, yes.
  20. The general sentiment in this thread seems to acknowledge that Nelson is not a future starter in the majors. To act like anyone is comparing him to Fielder in any way is silly, IMO. Some simply don't want to risk losing him because they think his replacement would be worse. The CHONE projection system considers minor league stats and has this line for Nelson in 2009: .254/.349/.407/.756 His 0-16 start would hurt that a hair but it's SUCH a small sample that it would not be much. As a starting corner outfielder or 1B, that would be terrible projection but for a pinch hitter/backupn that's not bad (although that represents his expected stats as a stater).
  21. I think Hardy being sent down is a very unreal possibility.
  22. The Big Unit is not only ignorant of the Brewers and baseball, he just isn't a avery smart guy overall. It's embarrassing that he's THE sports guy for the biggest radio station in Wisconsin.
  23. For the first month: 72 AB: .333/.430/.667/1.097 Who would have guessed that Cam would have the best hitting line through April? A couple days ago, the creator of ZiPS updated his player projections and gave his best guess final 2009 player lines. Here's Cam's: .264/.354/.492/.848, 23 HRs But he's also expected to finish with 128 Ks, so some will still be disappointed. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif With a line like that and a hissolid defense, he'll easily earn his $10 mil. The Brewer outfield is projected to finish with 89 HRs, BTW: Braun: 45 Hart: 21 Cam: 23
  24. I would just like to point out that the Brewers would have to finish with a 53-87 run to end with 65 wins. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif A 12-10 start is excellent, IMO. Looking at the numbers tell's you why it is but it still feels wrong how streaky baseball is.
  25. If you can get a 4.5 ERA from your #5 starting pitcher, you probably have the best staff in the league. If Suppan can end with even a 5.0 ERA this year, I'd be very happy. As for Parra, he isn't going anywhere, so tomorrow's game hold's no real importance, IMO.
