  1. I friggin' error saves the Cubs.
  2. The Brewers organization is now 1-1 in no hit games this year. Let's get above .500! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Gratz, Parra!
  3. Sheets slips into 6th place in the Nl with a 3.09 ERA.
  4. Sometimes it's also based on the concept that some players hit certain TYPES of pitchers better... I saw one study (in "The Book") search in vain for that kind of correlation. Doesn't mean it's not still true but I don't think it's easy to find if it is.
  5. Yost generally isn't one to use pitcher/batter splits to help make out his lineup (and that makes me happy).
  6. Ben Sheets All Star Watch: If Sheets can can get the win tonight and go 7IP, 1 ER, he'll be tied for the most wins in the NL (9) and will have the 6th lowest ERA (3.06).
  7. I went over to THT to read this guy's thoughts and I still can't believe he's making concrete assessments based on video that is provided by MLB.com. You aren't the only one to question some of his analysis. My gut tells me that he goes much farther with his conclusions than the evidence should allow. Of course, I know nothing about proper mechanics, so I am in no position to say whether any of it is wrong or right. Has he actually analyzed dozens of swings and displayed the ones most representative of the batter's tendencies?
  8. I'd never teach a teenager to try and cheat. What kind of a life lesson is that?
  9. Idk why but it seems Counsell either OWNS a pitcher or gets OWNED. Small simple splits for any batter tend to be more extreme, one way or the other. It's because they aren't generally telling us much about the batter's actual skill, much less his expected performance against the pitcher in question. They are interesting in a historical standpoint but they typically have little no or no predictive value.
  10. Prospect or not, there was no chance Gwynn would have the offensive production to justify starting in RF. He needs to start in CF to have value and he's blocked. Hey look, there's a Brewer game on and they won again! 19-21 run since their great start, though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  11. And Gwynn deserved to play when he was hot. And if every backup got to start when he had 36 great AB, you'd get similar results to what happened with Gwynn. That's not how you choose your starting lineup. I hope you're not talking about me Russell. I have no idea who said it. I assume it's in the Gwynn thread. Someone was comparing Gwynn's great 36 AB to Harts start.
  12. Thankfully Hart is putting the Gwynn debate to bed, though now it's not Gwynn vs Hart, it's Gwynn vs Gross. It was a Hart vs. Gwynn debate, when some suggested that Gywnn might have more value than Hart in RF. I'm sure those who said that would like to forget it was ever said.
  13. I would think you meant for this to be in blue, since it seems like every time this year that Bush gives up 2 quick leadoff singles in the 6th and 7th, the floodgates open. Yes, it "seems like every time". I hope Yost looks at thinks a little closer than that. One of Bush's positives is that he's been able to work deep in games throughout his career. That's anot all erased becasue of maybe 3 (don't really know) bad 6th or 7th innings. Yost should pull Bush if it looks like he's fatiguing, not after giving up 2 singles. He's at 108 pitches right now, so I'd have no problem if Yost pulled him out of there.
  14. Because Bush gives up two singles in a row, that means he's falling apart and should be replaced? Come on, now. He was at 90 pitches and doing fine.
  15. To small of sample sizes for Russ series predictions? I've been doing the homestand / roadtrip probabilities, to mitigate the problems with pitching matchups. A series with or without Sheets pitching makes a sizable difference, for instance. I have the Brewers with a 66% chance of winning each game this series, so the chances of each series result occurring is as follows: Brewers sweep: 29% Brewers win 2 of 3: 44% Brewers win 1 of 3: 23% Royals sweep: 4% So, there's a 1 in 4 chance of the Brewers losing the series and bf.net proclaiming that the Royals obviously own the Brewers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Seriously, though, any team can win any series in baseball. They'll just not win very many if they aren't good. That's why fans shouldn't make to much out of any 3 or 4 game set.
  16. Having an objective conversation about video game manufacturers sure is a challenge these days. When you mix MS hate and and Sony and Nintendo love, things get a little crazy. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Wasn't the Gcube on par with the XBox and more powerful than the PS2? I didn't really play much of the Gamecube (Mario party, Zelda and Mario Kart was about it) but my understanding was that it had nothing that compared to Halo 2 type graphics. What Gamecube games pushed the graphical power of the system? As I tried to make clear, my point wasn't that the 360 is durable or the wii isn't, just that expectations should be adjusted to a certain degree for both. I've never had a single problem with a Nintendo console but those devices have all been relatively simple, so I just keep that in mind when making comparisons. Sony's and MS's consoles have been pretty cutting edge, console-technology wise, so I'd expect more problems with them. There's just more things to go wrong. Is that a silly assumption to make? I support Nintendo because their systems just plain work. I support Sony because even though their track record isn't as good as Nintendo's, everyone of their products I have personally owned works for years, while every Microsoft product I have ever owned has not worked well. How many MS products do you own, other than their operating system? What other hardware? You aren't exactly coming across as unbiased.
  17. It sure would leave a sour taste in my mouth if a former Brewer / soft tossing lefty / rookie / any pitcher on a bad team, beat the Brewers. Wow, that doesn't leave many options for an opposing pitcher to win and not leave a bad taste in our mouth. Maybe we just don't like out team losing? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. Architecture wise, the Gamecube/wii has no comparison to the PS3 or 360. What is it, one circuit board with SD memory? I don't mean to infer that MS didn't design a sub par system (there have been systematic issues, for sure), reliability wise, but let's compare apples to apples, please. The more sophisticated an electronic component is, the better the chance something goes wrong.
  19. If you are considering how you can recoup loses in a potential divorce while shopping for a ring, maybe you shouldn't get married. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. Hydro-electric power trains Auto-car.
  21. I'd sure recommend taking her on a "let's just browse" trip to a couple jewelry stores. If you want to keep it non-committal, next time you two are at a mall, just glance at a watch or something and then ask her what rings she likes. As for the money, it should simply be based what you are comfortable with spending and what your possible-wife's preferences are. Some women don't want anything over a carrot; some would be offended by anything smaller than a carrot (glad to not have one of those http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ). Some women would rather have a modest ring and spend the savings on an extravagant honeymoon. Don't feel compelled to spend as much as you physically afford, however. There are plenty of other ways to spend huge sums of money as you start your lives together!
  22. Run it again, and let's see if the computer has climbed on board w/ my 12-7 prediction! You are .4 wins shorts now! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  23. The vast majority of major league players have a talent level within a certain, pretty well-defined range and it's quantified by whatever metric we use. No starting pitcher has ever had a 0 ERA for the year and no bater has batted .500. When that metric is outside the expected typical range, we can generally assume it's because it's not an accurately measure of the player's skill level. This is usually a result of the sample size not being sufficiently large enough to reduce the statistical uncertainty to an acceptable level. To use a batting analogy for Bush's LOB% and BABIP.... if any established major league (even Chad Moeller) batted .100 for the first part of the season, no matter the cause (short of injury), you'd expect his BA to rise going forward. Really, any BA below .150 and above .400 suggests that the sample isn't large enough to show the player's true skill level. Bush's BABIP isn't "batting .500" extreme but it's pretty up there. In 2006, only 4 qualified pitchers had a BABIP as high or higher than Bush's currently is. No pitcher had a LOB% as bad last year as Bush currently does. That doesn't automatically mean Bush will revert to average for both but it's certainly likely to improve. Here's another example: Helling's 2005 HR rate
  24. I like Bush as a pitcher and had high expectations for this year, but at some point in his career he needs to stop getting abused so often with runners on base.I Prior to this year year, he's shown he can have decent success even with that kind of a split. Hard for me to believe that the Brewers don't have room in their rotation for a 4.25 ERA starting pitcher.
