1. And I understand the bench is one man short, but what's the point of Vargas batting when he probably won't even make it through the next inning? I'm happy to say I was dead wrong. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Yet neither one were close to the warning track, and both were too far in the air to fall in for a hit. Still not excited. Other than a HR, all a batter can do is hit a ball hard and hope he finds a hole. I've never been a huge fan of the guy but to bail on Hall after less than 200 AB isn't fair.
2. I still remember the days in which I was excited when Bill Hall came to the plate. Those days seem so far away however. He's hit two balls right on the screw today... what are you going to do. And I understand the bench is one man short, but what's the point of Vargas batting when he probably won't even make it through the next inning?
3. Meaning, enjoy him now. We don't know how long he will stay here. I'm going to guess about 6 years, total.
4. I really like Estrada, but defensively he's not so hot with the basestealing. Well, when you consider his sub .300 OBP, it's kind of hard to get very excited about his performance at all so far.
5. Estrada's arm has just been terrible this year.
6. It's odd watching a possible future Hall of Famer develop before your eyes and realize that he's a Milwaukee Brewers.
7. Finally, bucksman's true identity is realized. Team doctor! I will agree with giving Corey Hart a legit shot at this leadoff spot. How many AB before we know if he belongs there? 50 maybe?
8. OPS is a nice rough tool but you are right to point out that OBP is more valuable than SLG, on a point by point basis. A better estimate of offensive prowess would be: OBP x 1.7 + SLG Remember, that works for a team, not just a player (a player's OBP does not interact with his SLG but rather the team's).
9. Fangraphs.com updates win probabilities live. It gives you a nice ballpark figure with regard to the probability of a team winning at any point in the game. One limitation that's very important to understand is that it assumes an average team vs. an average team. If the Brewers are up by 1 in the bottom of the 9th, they'll probably have better odds of winning than the WP indicates because Coco is an above average closer (unless, of course, the Brewers are up against an equally above average offense). It can give you a great idea of what situations are better than others (3B with 1 out, vs. 1st and 2nd with no out, for instance).
10. This was the game where Obie had a perfect game with one out in the 7th until Jamey Carroll broke it up. That's funny. I posted the link to that game's box score above but didn't even notice that Vargas pitched in it.
11. He had several very good games with the Brewers: 9 IP, 0 ER 7 IP, 0 ER 6 IP, 1 ER 7.2 IP, 0 ER 8 IP, 0 ER (Carried a perfect game into the 7th) 6 IP, 1 ER Of course, he also got shelled a bunch as well. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
12. Obermueller actually showed flashes of brilliance at times, so it wouldn't be fair to lump him in with guys like Wayne Franklin or all those other horrible, ex-Brewer starting pitchers. He was just never able to put it all together.
13. We need to make Wes throw strikes. Agreed. 42% of hit pitches this year have been balls and he's averaging over 4 pitches/PA. I hope the batters are patient early in the game, to see if Wes will give them some free passes and favorable pitch counts. If Obby beats us i think i will blow my tv up tonight. The problem is that the Brewers don't exactly have their ace going either. I'd rather have Vargas 100% of the time but I don't think the pitching matchup is as lopsided as some might think.
14. Viva la Mexico!! In my hotel. With my wife sleeping. At least the Brewers won and I have good Taquilla!
15. Win or not, I'm disappointed that Sheets only struck out 2 and gave up 11 hits in 6 IP. After his last start, I was hoping the old Sheets was back for good.
16. Turnbow being good Turnbow gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. That or I'm starting to feel this Mexican Taquilla.
17. It seems as though people really don't process the arguments that other posters make -- they just invent straw men and then rip them down (over and over and over . . .). The guys point is that the result of tonight's game might help determine if Sheets is a true ace. Why would a straw man need to be invented to argue against that? How is his argument being misrepresented anyway? What kind of response would be acceptable to you?
18. The Brewers were going to win 100 games, now they are destined to be under .500 by June? These last 3 weeks have been absolutely horrible to watch but this isn't a below average team. They aren't on paper and they haven't been on the field either. And let's please stop acting like it's wrong to be happy that the rest of the Central stinks. Much of the optimism going into the season was centered around the realization that the Brewers had a good shot at the playoffs because the Central stunk. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that 5 game lead, no matter how bad the Brewers have been playing. This team has too much talent to play below .500 for the rest of the year, and I say that completely objectively.
19. I'm on my wayyyyyy, just set me frEE-eeee... Home, sweet home......
20. The Braves have looked OK but nothing special. The Brewers will be the clear favorite at home.
21. Considering how bad the Brewers have been lately, it's hard to believe they'll, at worst, still have a 4 game lead in the Central. The Brewers played well above their abilities to start the season and now they've played below their abilities as of late. I'm still confident that if they play at their abilities for the rest of the year, they'll have a good shot at the division.
22. Has Estrada always had such a terrible arm? Is he hurt or something?
23. Air pressure, I think. I read a comment elsewhere from someone who was dead sure that whole place wouldn't have flooded when the porthole was broken, but who knows. The whole place would flood up to the level of the porthole. I guess it depends on what you like about the series as to whether you found the finale satisfying. I enjoy the sci-fi/fantasy realism aspect of the plot, so I want that explained and advanced. The last few episodes and much of the finale did just that but it came to a screeching halt towards the end of the finale. A person who watches the show primarily to enjoy the relationships of the characters and the character development in general would probably be very pleased with the finale. Can't please everyone I guess.
24. Why all the hate on TGJ? It's not his fault Hart doesn't get PT. He's been doing good. TGJ fanboyism makes some blind to what's really going on. Not including the strikeout in his first AB today: BA AB OBP SLG OPS 36 .417 .500 .500 1.000 27 .222 .250 .259 .509 -------------------------- 63 .333 .400 .397 .797His overall numbers are still very good but Gwynn has done almost nothing for quite some time. The fact that the above production came mostly out of the RF position is especially troublesome. I like Gwynn but not as a starter right now. There are simply better options.
