  1. Not when you're hitting in front of Braun or can steal bases at a 85% clip 85% against a lefty? It took a perfect throw to just barely get Gomez, so I still don't think it was a bad move. He probably get's into 2B there 95% of the time, so 5% of the time it will be called stupid.
  2. As much as I dislike Gomez, that is not a terrible place to try and grab an extra base.
  3. It just seems like the Brewers as a whole refuse to admit that they have put together just a terrible bench. WHY was Morgan not hitting for Almonte there? And Kotsay was going to bat for the pitcher.
  4. Like I said earlier, no it doesn't. Defensive metrics are pretty much useless in such a small sample. They can't even really estimate with any confidence if they have played well, much less if they are good. There is just too much uncertainty in estimating how often a particular ball-in-play should be converted into outs. I would trust personal observation more than any defensive stats at this point. Also, I didn't think defensive shifts were thrown out of the sample but I could be wrong on that.
  5. How much longer is RR going to make Gomez burn two strikes on 50% of his ABs? We all loved major league but let him swing already.
  6. No, you CAN'T remove what you consider an outlier. Data is data.
  7. We should expect a pitcher of Wolf's age to get progressively worse from year to year, not necessarily drop of a cliff. If he was was a true 4.2 ERA pitcher last year, we might expect a 4.35 ERA from him this year from just being one year older (I don't know what the actual average age curve looks like). On average, pitchers lose something like half a MPH every year, so that can explain just about all the drop I think.
  8. Advanced defensive metrics over two weeks tells you very little about the skill of a player. It's like looking at a players batting line after a week. Furthermore, it barely even tells you WHAT has happened. These defensive metrics have an extra layer of uncertainty over a batting line. I single is a single, a double is a double. Nothing to argue about. Defensive metrics are different in that they attempt to estimate the odds of an average defender making a particular play. There is a certain level of uncertainty in the data used to make that estimate (trajectory and speed). As long as that uncertainty is unbiased, that uncertainty will wash away with a large enough sample. In a small sample, they don't, though. Long story short, I wouldn't use two weeks of any play-by-play defensive system to tell me anything.
  9. You are trying to correlate team ERA to the defensive abilities of one player over 11 games? I'm going to go out on a limb to say that pitcher skill, luck and the defensive ability of the other 8 defenders might mask everything else.
  10. Exactly. There is almost no one on Betancourt's side these days. Here's Tangotiger's fan scouting report from last year: http://www.tangotiger.net/scout/index4.php?teamid=118&team=Kansas%20City%20Royals 0-100, 50 average. They think his arm is a little above average, at least. It's rare when you an have stats/fans/scouts agree on anything but sadly, this is one of them.
  11. How painful is it to watch running Ron try to force his style on a power hitting team? I'm sorry but this is just silly.
  12. I don't understand how the results of a few great games should be used as evidence for or against your question. I think it was a good question.
  13. First, great win. It was nice having someone who can hit available off the bench for hard to lose a game when you hit 3, 2 run HRS. Am I the only one thinking that all these HRs are really getting in the way of Roenicke's small ball approach?
  14. Kotsay is just very bad at every aspect of baseball at this point in his career. Can't run, can't throw, can't hit.
  15. Sure glad we are playing small ball in front of Braun and Fielder.
  16. Yes, I've enjoyed watching Morgan this year but as a regular, you shouldn't really expect anything more than great defense and a .270/.330/.350 line. His value would be maximized by playing CF and being platooned.
  17. Estrada is better than Wolf? O my goodness. Wolf has some nice projections for this year, so to compare him to a washed up Suppan is just ignorant.
  18. I was annoyed to see him get pulled back but to say that when the Brewers lost by 3 runs is pretty crazy.
  19. I will stop after this but it's really frustrating to see the kind of players the Brewers have hitched their wagon to this year. You are NOT going to have superstars at each position but we've chosen some terrible players to fill in the gaps.
  20. Ha, now we have our awesome #2 hitter to save us. Again... Prove me wrong!
  21. What a wonderful AB by our powerful pinch hitter.
  22. Mark Kotsay was put in there for his power? Really? please prove me wrong!
