  1. Francisco Liriano is one I hear a lot about up here in Twins-land. After his TJ, he was topping out at 90-91 in 2008. In 2009 that crept up to 93-94, and this year he was cranking away at 95-96, even touching 97. Small sample, single observation, etc. but guys come back from TJ and sometimes throw harder, and it can take more than a year for that to show up. It happened to Volquez, too.
  2. No blue text - is Henry Blanco available? If you're going for a zombie catcher why not get one who's good at defense?
  3. Seriously, Dave Bush's comparables to age 29 are Jon Lieber, Brian Moehler, Josh Fogg, Joe Mays, etc. This is not a rich man's Dave Bush. Compare that to Marcum's comparables today. Gallardo, Liriano, Jurrjens. Right there is more talent than the entirety of Bush's comparables list. The sky is not falling. This is a great trade, and it's just one prospect.
  4. Does anybody else remember Dickerson being so bad that the Brewers called up Lo Cain early? Gomez and Dickerson are BAD. Sure, they can play some defense, but Cain can play defense and he also swings the bat better than I do, which is not saying something. Gomez and Dickerson are BAD hitters. If they can turn Cain into another SP like Marcum, or better, then I would be okay with this. I doubt that will happen.
  5. Something else I forgot: in addition to this brilliant defensive upgrade, the Cardinals are also going to upgrading their infield defense, swapping Brendan Ryan out for the stone-handed Ryan Theriot. This is delightful!
  6. Looking at it, other than velocity and strike-out numbers, are there any categories in which this guy is NOT better than Gallardo? If we're talking about Gallardo as our ace, we just picked up a second ace in exchange for a blocked prospect at least two years from the majors. I like this trade a lot. All we need is one of those starters at AA to make the jump and we're in business. Mark Rogers, Jeremy Jeffress, I'm looking at you. In the alternative, we could get another pitcher from outside the organization. I really like this move.
  7. Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee, and Ryan Braun will have company as terrible left fielders in the Central. It's starting to become the division's calling card. Awesome first basemen, terrible left field defense.
  8. The big joke on Deadspin is that Q and not U should write the 2022 World Cup theme song. Zing! Qatar has to be a bribed pick. Has to be. USA and Australia were better choices in every way.
  9. I'm happy he's no longer with the Cubs. That dude really seemed to kill the Brewers.
  10. Last inning Cliff Lee looked at his strikeout total: "Just one? Let me fix that." Three K's, two looking. How high is this guy's salary going after the last two post-seasons? The Yankees are going to have to spend quite a bit to get him.
  11. That was merciless. For all their ability to dominate the AL Central over the last few years, the Twins have certainly not been able to do anything with it. I'm reminded of the Braves in the nineties.
  12. There was an article on si.com speculating that they did it to avoid facing Cliff Lee again. Added bonus of facing the Twins.
  13. Liriano with a Parra-esque meltdown. I sure hope the Twins can pull this one out somehow. Edit: Sabathia also with a Parra-esque meltdown, just Variety B instead of Variety A. Bases juiced for JJ.
  14. Unbelievable. What a playoff debut.
  15. I wish I had cable to watch what Roy Halladay is doing to the Reds right now. On a side note, the last NL Central team to win a playoff game looks like it will continue to be the 2008 Brewers, at least for one more day.
  16. This is a lot like CC to the Brewers. Great trade for the Mariners, and if Lee can carry the Rangers' young staff deep into the post-season, and possibly win the Series, it will have been a good trade for the Rangers, too. The Rangers just need to hope that the Yankees don't also sign the guy who's .02 points higher on the Elias rankings...
  17. Hopefully Wolf likes the return to Southern California.
  18. Once he got through eight, that's pretty much it. Man, Ted Lilly is about to complete a no-hitter.
  19. I wanted to address this. The US goal was primarily a major blunder by the GK, but Gerrard got absolutely skinned by Dempsey on the play. He went from being in physical contact with Dempsey to being a good ten yards away at the end of Dempsey's move.
  20. I agree that Mexico is probably in the worst shape of the quality teams (France, Uruguay, Mexico). They have no excuses for not getting three points against South Africa, and you can bet that Uruguay and France would be able to put in all those open shots inside the penalty area that Mexico missed. South Africa (not exactly an explosive attacking team) also exposed Mexico's poor back line and shaky goalie, so I would be a little bit worried as a Mexico supporter.
  21. That was a very good game, overall: lots of attacking soccer, good passing, and some exciting moments. Although South Africa should have gotten that winner in the 89th minute, they were lucky that Mexico's forwards can't score with their heads. Mexico is definitely the better team, and I agree that that goalie is shaky.
  22. The call was actually correct. The Laws of the Game state that a player is offside when he is closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent. In this case, the goalie had passed Vela coming off his line. The goalie was at that point the second last opponent. People often erroneously exempt the goalkeeper and assume that the attacker has to just have one field player between him and the goal. The offside was correctly called. Edit: to not sound like a jerk.
