The game against Lilly was the one we lost last weekend. Anyway, the color commentators sent the entire Howard at-bat about how great he was and that lefties are a little tougher, but he would just wait until he got his pitch and then hit it. They were literally describing the at-bat as if they knew that Howard was going yard. He then punched out on a filthy slider, and one of them meekly chirped, "you get that sometimes..."
Because we hit a lot of home runs. One swing of the bat can change the game. Ask the Cards about Bill Hall and Ryan Braun in St. Louis, the Twins about Jim Thome (and Alexei Ramirez), and the Mets about Wes Freaking Helms.
Colbyjack, those pictures are great. I love the Torres picture mid-dance. Does anybody else think that Seth McClung looks kinda like a used-car salesman in that picture?
Now, I was just following on Gameday, but on Prince's double in the first, was it at all a question of sending Braun? If not, yeah, I agree that the decision that cost the game was putting in Shouse against a righty.
How good is Cincinnati's drafting compared to their minor league scouting? I know that they've picked up Bruce and Bailey in the draft lately, but are there any other successes?
A pitching change isn't that likely. Their starter went less than five innings because they were so short that he pitched three days ago. The Nats are really short on relievers right now after that double header and yesterday's thirteen innings.
It's amazing how much better the team seems to be when you get a bunch of guys playing to or near their potential. Speaking of which, does Prince still have that hitting streak going?
I would definitely take Zimmerman and probably Milledge. If nothing else, stash them in AAA for a little bit of seasoning. Remember that Zimmerman came out of that 2005 draft, and that was considered to be something of a "Year of the Third Baseman" in part because of him. He's still young and has lots of talent. Hey! We scored a run!
I thought Counsell was going to send Mock to the showers by himself in that at-bat, just to make me eat my sarcastic words. Ten pitches for an out, that I can't gripe about. In all seriousness, way to battle. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
He did have 8 Ks against the Rangers in 6 IP earlier this season. To add, three of those Ks did come from Dave Bush with two outs (no bunt available), Rickie Weeks (K machine - nice homer, though) and Craig Counsell (just plain sucks).
I remember reading an SI baseball preview article from the dark days of the late '90s-early '00s (example: Royce Clayton was starting at SS). It said something along the lines of there are almost no Brewers who would start on any other team. I think that statement applies pretty well to the Nationals here.
That's the second time ESPN has awarded the Brewers a sweep in a four-game series after winning the first three. The last time was after game three in that sweep at Busch. On Sportscenter the next day, they talked about the Brewers sweeping while the bottom line listed the Brewers and Cardinals pitching matchup for that very evening. I love ESPN. Top name in sports news involving the Red Sox, Cubs and Yankees. Everybody else? We have interns for that!
Well, eleven innings isn't too bad. It'd be nice if they could duplicate that feat for the next couple of games. Of course, next time, try to make it a high-scoring affair so both teams have to go through a bunch of relievers http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
If we're hurting that bad for a lefty third baseman who's not Branyan, why not call up Gamel and give him a shot? I know there are roster concerns, but seriously. At the very least don't bat him sixth.
