  1. I guess my point is 2-fold. A) 98% of knowledgeable fans believed that the strength of this team was the bullpen going into this season. So "focusing on strengthening the bullpen" is a science that it seems like cannot be mastered. B) I agree that you keep Gallardo (unless blown away by an offer), but even with him, it is anyone's guess if next year's starters are even close to as good as this year's starters. Yes, I agree, all you need is 1 or 2 established above average starters, but then you are hoping that the rest of the rotation figures it out and contributes. With the team we have next year (sans any FA additions that we cannot predict), no one here can say they will be as successful. That's the risks you take with younger/cheaper players.
  2. I hate getting off topic, but I want to address as specific point. "seriously, we were a bullpen away from winning this division. the starting pitching, hitting, defense were not the problem on this team, so freaking out and trading away Gallardo/Hart/Ramirez is just foolish. the brewers will still be good next year and the year after." Ok, while I agree with this statement for this year's team, next year's team is a different issue. Next year's starting rotation is not likely to be as good as this year's. We are losing out best pitcher and Mike Fiers is unlikely to continue to be a 2 ERA pitcher. Narveson/Thornburg/Estrada/Rogers/Peralta/Burgos/Marcum?/(Even) Fiers are all question marks going into 2013. Gallardo is really the only known we have. Sure, we could sign a 3/4 starter to an average contract, but that's still at least 60% of your opening day rotation that we have really no clue on how well they will perform. As for our bullpen, yes, this team was an average bullpen away from being contenders this season, but where do you see us improving our bullpen next year? Axford is the only guy coming back for sure. Depending on how the rest of the season goes, Henderson may have a 6th or 7th inning role. Other than that... all question marks. I've suggested trading Maldonado for an established bullpen arm, but I have gotten a lot of push back on getting rid of a cheap backup catcher. I am 100% for putting a cheap bullpen together and seeing what sticks, but we have no idea if next year's BP will be any better (even though it can't get much worse).
  3. I would rather have one more like this 6-man Rotation Gallardo Marcum Fiers Estrada Thornburg/Peralta/Rogers (these three splitting the last 2 spots of 6 man rotation equally) Btw... for further discussion on trading Gallardo, please visit the transactions page. We already have discussion going on the topic.
  4. His 300 average in AAA will translate into a 270 average in the MLB, and I forgot to mention he has NO POWER at all. That's 50-70 points higher than what junk we are currently putting out there and pretty much equal on the power. I wouldn't be this irate about the situation if we had any inkling of a major league SS already, but we clearly don't. So why not give the guy that has already shown he can perform in AAA a shot? If he fails, so what? At least then we know.
  5. Couldn't have been better said PrinceEatMeat. Some of the posters here are worried about marketability of this team if we traded someone like Ramirez who is a former Cub and was just signed this season. What would we be telling fans if we traded away basically the only upper tier starting pitcher the Brewers have developed in the last 10 years? Gallardo has been very good this year, no reason to look at trading him.
  6. If it was a cheap, young, capable backup catcher that we were grooming to eventually start, I would 100% agree. But we have our catcher for the foreseeable future. The value we could get trading him would help the team win more then relegating him to backup duties. I may be way off, maybe we can't get anything of value for him, and if that is the case, I would much rather have him be the backup. But if we can get anything useful (maybe packaging him with AmRam or Hart) that can help this team win (like an every day 3B or SS that we could also have under control for 4-6 years), I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't want to do that. Having a very good backup catcher is an unnecessary luxury. The impact Maldy will make on the Brewers over the time that he is with the team (assuming health obviously) is not that much greater than any other backup we bring in, even one at a Kottaras level. If we had someone like a Kendall or Estrada still as our starter, I would be singing a completely different tune. But we have LuCrOy as our starter until 2016. I'm just afraid that if we don't look to trade him soon, he will not have the value that he does now and we won't get anything for him if his offensive ability reverts to his minor league levels. Strike while the iron is hot!
  7. I am pretty sure I saw somewhere (probably mlbtraderumors.com) that said the Yankees weren't interested in AmRam because he was signed for multiple years. I don't have a link obviously.
  8. I am not totally off ship yet, but its hard to keep faith in a guy who keeps a SS with an OPS of .540 over the last three seasons on the roster over a guy that may be a part of the team next year (even if just as a backup). If the roster changes drastically over the next week or so, I will take back everything. But if Cesar Izturis is still on the team at that time, I take back nothing.
  9. Rangers Get Greinke Gallardo Brewers Get Profar Olt Perez Feliz Done.
  10. "He is a fringe MLB player at best" Based on what?
  11. AA and AAA isn't much of a difference.
  12. Check the Transactions Forum... its blowing up.
  13. If the trade is done today, yes. If not, then no it doesn't.
  14. Both of these moves are very short sighted, which is what this organization does I suppose. Only think in the present.
  15. If Bianchi is back up before September, great, fantastic! I am not getting my hopes up though.
  16. Andrus would be a heck of a return for Greinke, anything on top of that would be gravy.
  17. I would only trade him if you could actually get something of value. Obviously he helps this team as an above average backup catcher and a great defensive sub, but if you can get someone that will play more and add more wins than a backup catcher would, I would trade him. I just believe that some team will be able to use him in a higher capacity than the brewers would be able to. He would be a minimum salary guy for another team as well, which gives him very high trade value.
  18. I will restrain from saying something that will get me a strike on this forum.
  19. I seriously am lost as to why everyone thinks Bianchi is just a guy. Neither TLB or myself are saying he is the next coming of Derek Jeter (or even the next JJ Hardy.... or even the next Cody Ransom!), but to say he is awful after getting 11 PAs, coming off of a great half season in AA/AAA is very short sighted. As TLB said, he is a former 2nd round pick (as a High Schooler) so for him to take 6 years in the minors to get where he is at is not unheard of. He is only 25 and hasn't been given a shot at the major league level, even though he has batted over .300 with an OBP over .350 each of the last two seasons. Sure, he has a decent chance of being no better than Izturis, not a single person will argue with that, but to say it doesn't matter is pretty ridiculous. He has been a better batter than Maldonado his entire minor league career and plays a premium defensive position. Bianchi - 2nd round pick, Maldonado - 27th round pick. "Also, how are the other catchers in AA and AAA going to be adjusted if Maldanado's back there taking away their AB's? Aren't they prospects needing development, too?" Our next best prospect is Cameron Garfield and he is in Low-A ball right now. Maldonado going to AAA would have no effect on him. I believe Dayton Buller (31) and Jason Jaramillo (29) are getting the majority of the starts in AAA at this time. So no, we do not have any other catchers that we need to worry about.
  20. No, I want Maldonado in AAA so he can play everyday. He can't play everyday with Lucroy in the Big Leagues. I want Bianchi in the Majors because we have nothing better than him and no players that are in the long term plans at SS. (Sorry, I was ranting before because I'm super pissed so it may not have been clear). I don't know what we can get for Maldonado, but I bet we could get a set up man or very good middle relief (which we need!) and that would help this team much more than a back up catcher. I am also not suggesting you trade Maldonado now, he is a much better candidate for an off season trade when all 29 other teams may be listening. As far as your point that GMs would rather see some success at the MLB level, I 100% agree. However, I think the chances of him sustaining that success will be greatly diminished with limited playing time. It would be better to keep him in a routine, playing almost every day in AAA. Bring him back up to the Majors in September after Nashville's season is over to get a few more major league ABs.
  21. So we are writing of Bianchi after 11 major league plate appearances? Listen, I'm not saying he is definitely going to be able to cut it, but we know what we have in Izturis, we know almost nothing about Bianchi other than he can hit in AAA.
  22. If he is never going to be a starter, then we need to trade him to a team that thinks he will be. Having him playing 1-2 times a week will not show that his bat is real (and it may not be) but that's what needs to be done. I don't care about the backlash from the average fan. They won't go to games when they are losing anyways. The team needs to build a winner and wasting potential assets to back up roles or sending a possible future starter to the minors when you have absolutely nothing blocking him at the major league level is just awful roster management.
  23. I would have DFA'd Izturis and Optioned Maldonado. Bianchi starts at SS. You need to see if he can cut it at the major league level with regular playing time, he was batting .305 in AAA before being regulated to the Brewers bench. Maldonado 5-6 days a week in AAA to keep working on his bat. Trade Kottaras to anyone willing to take him and bring up Dayton Buller to be the backup. Once September comes, bring back Maldonado to play every couple days and be a late inning defensive sub. I really don't understand what is so hard about that. I am starting to lose faith in DM. He better wow me with what he gets for ZG.
  24. In what way? Maldonado now plays 1 or 2 times a week when he needs time to continue to work on his offensive game. Bianchi should be our starting SS the rest of the season unless he completely falls off the table, kind of like Izturis.
  25. How can our front office be this awful? This makes no sense at all.
