  1. Any ideas on the starting 5 at this point? Gallardo Marcum Wolf Narveson ???
  2. In spring training the organization thought so little of him they left him off the all star ballot for a 40 year old OF who had been out of the game for a year. This isn't really true. The all star ballot is determined by the opening day starters. Edmonds got the opening day start, so he made the ballot.
  3. the team was giving bush room to save face.. if he's going to be angry, be angry about the performances Bush has been bad in 2 of 11 outings. Has 6 QS out of 11 (2nd on the team to Gallardo's 8, Wolf has 5). In the 9 games outside of his two blow ups, he has a 3.01 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. I'm not sure what more you expected from him.
  4. Question... Once a player is called up to the majors, does he get a Major league Salary for the whole year, or is it based off of how much time you spend with the major league club?
  5. Totally agree sheethead, I'm just making an observation. I don't think Mench was the answer at all, but my point is that Cruz played as poorly as Mench did, and he was in a hitter friendly environment. To think that the Brewers would (or should) have waited around this long for him is asking a lot.
  6. As a Brewer, Kevin Mench had 441 PAs and a line of .256/.288/.403/.691 with an OPS+ of 76. Mench and Cruz were pretty much Identical players. Mench batted a little better and Cruz played a bit better in the field (going by Range Factor).
  7. We traded for Cruz to Texas in 2006. In 2006 and 2007 with Texas in 470 PAs, he had a line of .231/.279/.384/.664 with an OPS+ of 72. In that same time period, Corey Hart in 822 PAs had a line of .291/.345/.516/.861 with and OPS+ of 118. Do you guys really think he would have been a member of the Brewers today after putting up seasons like that? At best he would have been a 5th outfielder on the team.
  8. Yes, in situations where 1 run will win the game, bunting is acceptable.
  9. My vote is for them to stop bunting always. But that is my vote for pretty much all major league teams. I hate bunting.
  10. After this year the results are going to look below average, rather than just average. You know the Brewers ending record already?
  11. Me too DatHoser!!! First ever!
  12. Melvin traded for Jorge De La Rosa, Carlos Villanueva, Zach Jackson, and Jose Cappellan. All of those pitchers were considered upper tier pitching prospects. None of them have panned out as starting pitchers for the Brewers.
  13. If that is what satisfies us, I feel bad for us. I'm not satisfied, but its a start. There are a lot of decisions to be made over the next few years with our first crop of minor league talent and I want DM to be the one to make those decisions. Now if we only make the playoffs once over the next 4-6 years when our 2nd crop of minor leaguers come up, then I'll start to take issue.
  14. I will agree with you on the RP. 15.5 million on back end bullpen is absurd, but I just cannot get in your boat on the rotation. You are suggesting we started the year with the following rotation. Yovanni Wolf Parra Suppan Narveson Suppan has been useless and should be out. Now who? Estrada, ok. Yovanni Wolf Parra Narveson Estrada What if someone gets hurt? Capuano? Loe? If you are committing to a playoff run (which Melvin was), that pitching depth just isn't going to cut it.
  15. Why is the answer to see failures in Suppan & Looper and replace them with Davis & Wolf. I don't know how many times I need to post this before you keep referring to Davis and Wolf as horrible decisions. Hind sight is 20/20. Doug Davis from 2005-2009 (Age 29-33) 4.28 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, ERA+ 106, Average 194 IP per season (6.06 IP/GS) Doug Davis 2010 7.56 ERA, 1.98 WHIP, ERA+ 54, 33.1 IP (4.7 IP/GS) Braden Looper from 2005-2009 (Age 30-34) 4.57 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, ERA+ 93, Average 140 IP per season (2 seasons spent in BP, about 190 IP per season as Starter) Randy Wolf from 2005-2009 (Age 28-32) 4.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, ERA+ 100, Average 129 IP per season (Injuries first 3 season, injury free last 2 for 202 IP average, 5.86 IP/GS) Randy Wolf 2010 5.10 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, ERA+ 80, 54.2 IP (6.07 IP/GS) Jeff Suppan 2005-2009 (Age 30-34) 4.48 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, ERA+ 96, Average 186 IP per season (5.8 IP/GS) I guess by looking at these numbers, I don't understand how you could expect the brewers pitching staff to not improve by adding Davis and Wolf to the fold.
  16. When did the Brewers have a good 2-3 year run? .520 Winning % from 2007-2009. 1 playoff appearance when our #1b pitcher got hurt. Lost to the eventual WS champs. More playoff victories than the cubs since 2004. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. Payrolls in DM's term 2010: $ 90,408,000 2009: $ 80,182,502 2008: $ 80,937,499 2007: $ 70,986,500 2006: $ 57,568,333 2005: $ 39,934,833 2004: $ 27,528,500 2003: $ 40,627,000 He's just started getting more money to use. So you can't use his tenure for winning percentage and not take into account that this team was still a very low payroll team for the first 5 years of his tenure. Like i said in my post, coming into this year, it seemed like the 90 million he spent was done so in a very smart manner. However, none of the FA pitchers he has signed has performed anywhere near their expectations. Its not like there were signs pointing to this massive drop off either, so I'm not sure what you expected him to do, other than sell some of our lineup, but then we wouldn't be a top hitting club. I understand your frustration on missing out on some possible trades, I just have a hard time analyzing something that didn't happen. We just don't know who he talked to or which prospects were offered for which pitchers. When he has made trades, more often than not, DM has gotten the better end of the deal (people will be arguing until the end of time on who won the Lee/Cruz for Cordero/Mench trade). Has he made some signings that haven't worked out? Yes, without a doubt. But if you go back to when the signing was made (possibly outside of the Suppan deal), he is usually making a signing that most of us agree with.
  18. I never suggested that his plan was building towards 2012. I think his plan was to win this year and next year, but some of the parts of that plan (Wolf, Davis, Hoffman, Hawkins) are failing horribly. However, I don't think that two years of less than par baseball after a good 2-3 year run should be something to fire DM for, after coming off 15 years of crap. He signed Randy Wolf, who almost everyone considered to be the 2nd best SP available this offseason. He signed Doug Davis as bottom end rotation filler to a one year, low risk deal. He signed Hoffman, who not only attracted fans to the stadium, but helped the Brewers immensely last season and was going for an all time mark in saves. He signed Latroy Hawkins who over the past 10 seasons has had a 3.42 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 142 ERA+ (3.54, 1.31, and 126 over the last 5 years). To me, all of those moves seem like win now moves. To recap, he's put together one of the best lineups in all of baseball, did his best to improve his pitching staff through FA (and most signs pointed to those moves being quality moves), and still has a lot of exciting talent in the farm. To me that is a successful GM.
  19. So, it is your opinion that we are waiting on 2012 and that Melvin will come out smelling pretty good? It depends on a lot of factors. What do they do with Prince? What do we get for him in trade? Do we resign Weeks to a long term deal? What do we do with Hart? Does he continue to perform at this level? Can the following players perform consistently on a major league level? Gamel, Lucroy, Lawrie, Parra, Narveson, Gomez, Escobar, Capuano, Rivas, Axford, Braddock, Estrada, Rogers, Heether, Gindl, Wheeler, Cain, Odorizzi I think the talent is still there for this team. I don't think losing Prince will be the end of the world. This year and next are going to be very interesting for the Brewers entire system, and I trust Melvin to be the guy to get us through it based on his previous body of work, improving this team from bottom feeder to playoff contenders.
  20. I doubt they are better than what we have now. But right now, we have one of the best offenses in all of baseball. If your offensive production drops a little and our pitching gets better, we should become more balanced and be able to win more games.
  21. I'd like to see him make 2-3 more starts in AAA and see how he does. The problem is that he only has one more start before a decision has to be made.
  22. At what point should Melvin be held accountable for these mistakes? Melvin is being held accountable for these mistakes, but he should also be credited for his successes. All GMs make good and bad moves, some teams are just able to cover the mistakes better because of money. The Brewers, and Melvin, don't have this luxury. Suppan, while I don't agree with it, was a move to get this team closer to a playoff birth. It looks bad now, but 7 of the 8 seasons prior to becoming a Suppan had over 100 ERA+, Averaged 32 games started with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.398 WHIP. At the time of the deal, it was a fair price. He would have been a great 3/4 pitcher if we had someone other than Ben Sheets pitching well that season (and Sheets only pitched in 24 games). His first two seasons with the Brewers, he was slightly below average (96, 85). While that is true, the Brewers gave Suppan 4/$42M, and they gave Sheets 4/$38.5M two years earlier. [/i]Sheets was not a FA when he signed his deal. 2 years of Arbitration were bought out with his deal. It may not be fair, but that is how baseball works. Is it fair that Corey Hart makes almost 4x what Ryan Braun makes? No. Its all about when you sign your contract.
  23. Ben Sheets has a 5.04 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and 4.6 BB/9. He didn't pitch all of last season. Why are people so upset we didn't sign him?
  24. Here's my take. This show was really broken down to two things, the character story and the science/mythology of the island. I think the writers did a fantastic job with the character story from start to finish. Even Kate, who had been useless for nearly the entirety of the show, had her redemption. There were many mythological and scientific things that did go unanswered, but I think enough of the mysteries of the island were touched on. I really think what it came down to was after season 3 and the writers strike and whatnot, that cut down on the total episodes that were going to be created and the producers had to make a decision on which direction to go. Fully complete the character development, answer more mythology questions, or do a little of both. I'm glad they went the route they did. I was satisfied with the ending. IMO, it would have been better if the sideways world was heaven, but then again you wouldn't see Sayid acting that way in heaven. I'm pretty sure the sideways world represented heaven, or purgatory, or some sort of afterlife.
