  1. I don't have a problem with Yo expressing his opinion -- he was asked a question by a reporter, so it's not like he walked into Anaheim with a giant "BOYCOTT AZ" sign. I agree with JB12 that as a Mexican-American, Yo absolutely has the right to at the very least feel nervous about the law. He's also far from the only Mexican-American player to say something similar -- Adrian Gonzalez started saying he'd boycott the second the law passed, and Joakim Soria is quoted in the ESPN article, too. Whether or not the law actually targets Latinos is probably better left to the Political Scene forum, but I think anyone in Yo's shoes would be sensitive about the subject.
  2. Sorry, but when you need to fill out the field with Chris Young and Nick Swisher, your contest is in trouble. I remain convinced Adam Dunn should be an All-Star every year, if only to compete in this contest. He's hit 266 home runs since 2004 (38 per year) and hasn't been an All-Star once in that stretch.
  3. NEVER SURRENDER! Nice way to go into the All-Star break, guys. Rest up and let's go on a run starting next weekend.
  4. Gomez! I have to say I wasn't confident there, but I love it when he proves me wrong. Nice job just going with the pitch instead of trying to pull it like he usually does.
  5. I don't know why you would waste your best pinch hitter on a sacrifice bunt attempt. With Doumit catching and this team's inability to get a bunt down, Escobar probably should've been allowed to run during Inglett's AB. Instead, Macha burns Inglett by keeping the bunt sign on even with two strikes. Hopefully that's not the last chance they get to even this game up.
  6. Amazing what a series against the Pirates will do to help you get your swing back. Too bad Braun's heating up just before the long break.
  7. I wouldn't say exactly the same. For one, teams are a lot more protective of their prospects now than they were three years ago. Saltalamacchia, Andrus, and Harrison were the #1, 2, and 3 rated prospects in the Braves' system that year. They thought they had a chance at keeping him long term because Tex went to Georgia Tech, and that ended up being a mistake (and there won't be any such delusions when it comes to Fielder -- everyone knows he's gone, wherever he goes). The trade ended up being a massive failure for Atlanta -- they missed the playoffs and ended up trading him to the Angels for Casey Kotchman a year later. I'd be pretty surprised if any potential buyers didn't learn from that.
  8. Yeah, just realized I botched the score the first time around and re-edited the thread title. Whoops.
  9. Bringing a beach ball to a Brewers game should be a crime punishable by death.
  10. Buster Olney checks in with some Fielder-related tweets. Nothing we haven't really heard before, though: In other words, we should probably forget about Perez or any prospects like him.
  11. Maybe the Yankees shouldn't have tried to trade the Mariners damaged goods in Adams. Also, I believe it was Ed Price who had a good point this morning -- you didn't see the Yankees complaining when they talked David Wells out of a handshake free agent deal with Arizona in 2002. I liked this quote from the Post article linked in Invader's post: Frankly, if Cashman wants to conduct bad business by refusing to negotiate with Jack Z in the future over this, let him. What happens if Jack Z wants to start fielding offers for King Felix in a few years? Cashman would be stupid to let this get in the way of future trade negotiations.
  12. I may be forgetting something, but this was the sequence of events that played out last season: - In a game in April, Ryan Braun homered off Karstens - Karstens drills Braun between the shoulder blades in his next AB, the Brewers know it's intentional but don't retaliate when Karstens comes up to hit the next inning. - Braun knows it's intentional, vows vengeance in post game interviews (even saying something to the effect of "Tell Mr. Selig to pay attention") - The Brewers hit multiple Pirates batters the next day. - In July, Karstens gets hit by a pitch while batting against the Brewers. - Karstens starts screaming at the pitcher who hit him (I forget who at this point), Jason Kendall steps in, and Pirates pitching coach Dave Kerrigan takes offense to Kendall getting involved. - Kendall has to be physically restrained from going after Kerrigan. - Kendall repeatedly (and intentionally) calls Kerrigan "Dave Kerwin" in postgame interviews. Fun times.
  13. A lot of people here mentioned Ridnour possibly going to the Knicks, but New York came to terms with Ray Felton today. Don't know if they'd still bring in Ridnour or not, but Felton is a nice upgrade over Chris Duhon for them.
  14. Jeff Karstens? Things could get interesting tonight (again).
  15. Brian and Bill have developed some nice chemistry, and on the TV side of things, I think that's important. You don't need to listen to everything they say because you can see what's going on for yourself. Now, when it comes to the radio broadcast, I'd like to hear Jenks or Rillo drop in from time to time, or act as a "guest commentator" for a full game every now and then. Davey Nelson seems like a really nice, knowledgeable guy, but some people just get so nervous with a mic on that they have trouble articulating their thoughts.
  16. The team really needed this win from a morale standpoint, but Braun almost needed that hit more than the team did. It was nice to hear him acknowledge that he's been terrible in the postgame interview...that should dispel some of the claims that he just doesn't care anymore. Nice to see the guys smiling again, even if it is against the Pirates.
  17. I wish Fox Trax traded in some of its presentation for accuracy. It doesn't seem to be very consistent when comparing it to the pitch locations in pitch f/x data (or at least it never did earlier in the season...haven't had the chance to check it recently).
  18. On the bright side, if the Brewers get swept they'll still be 4 games ahead of Pittsburgh. This Pirates lineup looks quite a bit different than the last time we saw them. I'm most excited to see Tabata and Alvarez.
  19. The Rangers are also getting $2.5 million from the M's to help pay for Lee's remaining salary this year. Chris Davis is coming up to play first base for the Rangers. Wouldn't count on them trading for Prince, Dunn, or any other players -- with their ownership situation (they're on "baseball welfare" while they try to find a buyer; there's been legitimate worry among players and employees that their paychecks almost bounced at the end of May), the only way they were able to do this deal was if they got Seattle to pick up a large portion of the tab. Since trading for Fielder would also require a significant salary commitment in 2011 aside from his remaining 2010 salary, I don't see it happening. I doubt many fans would like to see the Brewers lose Prince and give up money in the same deal.
  20. That's assuming it's true...IIRC, Peter Gammons doesn't have a great history of reporting rumors that eventually become fact (although I do remember him being one of the first to mention Kevin Mench for Carlos Lee).
  21. It's one thing to say the Yankees throwing gobs of money at top free agents is bad for baseball, but it's another to say it when they're acquiring players via trade. I still don't think Lee improves their (significantly high) chances of repeating as champs, but if they're willing to give up more in a trade than another team, I don't feel comfortable playing the "bad for baseball" card. How is it the Yankees' fault that the Mariners find Jesus Montero more appealing than Minnesota's Wilson Ramos?
  22. I don't even know why the Yankees would trade for Cliff Lee. They're already probably the favorites to win the World Series, so they'd be giving away Jesus Montero (and more) for no real reason at all, other than maybe just keeping him away from Tampa Bay...but if they want to go back to giving up top prospects in unnecessary trades, I say let them.
  23. The Heat will probably get 60 wins in the regular season, but they'll be lucky to get past Boston, Orlando, or even Chicago in the playoffs. Right now they have no point guard, no rebounders, and no bench. The Triumvirate is going to have to play a ton of minutes for them to be as good as everyone thinks they will be, and by the time you get to the playoffs, they're going to be out of gas. I'd be shocked if the Heat made the Finals in 2011, let alone won it. Of course, if the Heat don't win it in 2011, Spoelstra becomes the scapegoat and gets fired.
  24. I had honestly forgotten that Estrada was still on the big league DL. I don't know if it was a stunt on his part to come up as hurt when the Brewers tried to send him down, but the same thing has happened to Mat Gamel before and I don't know if anyone would accuse him of trying to pull a fast one on the organization. The depth provided by Gerut would've been nice the other night when Edmonds hurt himself again, but it looks like Joe Inglett is responding well to his expanded role, even if he does look like an infielder who's not used to the outfield at times.
