I'm still amazed at the result, considering how many good chances at goals they had choked away before Donovan finally put one in. Disallowing the goal in the first half was a bad call, but if they had tied, it would've been their own fault with Altidore and Dempsey both missing shots that still stick out in my mind. I'm not a big soccer fan, but this was by far one of the most exciting sporting events I've seen in awhile. Yeah, there was no scoring until the last second, but there were plenty of scoring opportunities and it took amazing defense on both sides to keep the game at 0-0. There was a sense of urgency with every possession that you didn't really see in the first two games, when both teams were just playing for a point.
As Reliever: 24 IP, 29 H, 10 ER, 22 K, 8 BB As Starter: 24.1 IP, 25 H, 11 ER, 28 K, 14 BB Almost exactly even, but slightly better strikeout numbers since his move to the rotation (10.4 K per 9 innings, as opposed to 8.3 in the bullpen).
I love CDR. New Jersey was horrible as a team, but they had some very good young and exciting players and he was one of the guys I enjoyed watching the most. Still not the greatest jumpshooter (that hasn't changed from his days at Memphis), but it's a definite upgrade in the athleticism department. I was totally fine with letting Salmons walk before the past couple days, and now I have qualms about it whatsoever.
I'm not really a fan of skipping Bush's start, either, after the outing he put together against the Angels. What's the worst case scenario if you start Bush in this game? He pitches at about the same level Narveson does tonight and you don't tick anyone off in the process? Macha gave some line about making sure everyone is put in a situation to succeed, and for whatever reason, it almost sounded like Yost when he was explaining the Bush/McClung home/away (or away/home, I forget who had what) platoon.
Somewhere, there's a Rockies fan complaining that they never seem to be able to finish sweeps of bad teams. Good win on a getaway day that keeps the season series even. Three really good starts from the rotation this series, too, despite the fact that they were playing in such a hitter-friendly park. Hopefully the upcoming series against the Twins goes better than the last one.
Rickie has been incredible with RISP so far this year. .346/.478/.481 before he almost hit a granny there. Thank you Jim Tracy for pitching Corpas for a 4th straight day after he nearly blew an 8-4 lead last night.
He seems like the kind of guy that might be useful for an AL contender looking for a bat off the bench or a part-time DH. I was a little puzzled by the signing when it happened, and I really don't like seeing him take ABs away from Gomez considering the team's situation. I get the feeling he'd appreciate being traded to a contender at this point, because I don't think he signed on to be the 4th outfielder on a team destined to finish a distant 3rd/4th. I wouldn't expect much in a trade for him, but I'd settle for a live arm that might have a future in the bullpen or something.
Another solid start for Wolf, and it looks a lot like his start against the Angels: vs. LAA: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 15 GB, 6 FB Today: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 10 GB, 7 FB Nice way to rebound from that 5-HR game against the Cubs.
The stats make the start seem better than it really was. The PbP for his start against Oakland: 1st Rajai Davis flies out to center Daric Barton singles on a line drive Daric Barton caught stealing Conor Jackson grounds out 2nd Kevin Kouzmanoff singles on a line drive Ryan Sweeney grounds into force out Adam Rosales flies out to center Landon Powell grounds out sharply to first base 3rd Cliff Pennington singles to center Trevor Cahill sacrifice bunt Rajai Davis flies out to right Daric Barton flies out to center 4th Conor Jackson strikes out looking Kevin Kouzmanoff homers to left Ryan Sweeney singles on line drive to left Ryan Sweeney out at 2nd, catcher Jason LaRue to first baseman Albert Pujols Adam Rosales strikes out swinging 5th Landon Powell doubles to center Cliff Pennington singles on line drive to right Trevor Cahill bunts, Pennington out at second Rajai Davis lines into force out Suppan wild pitch Daric Barton walks Not exactly a dominating effort, and he had the advantage of the A's basically giving him 4 free outs with the bunts and outs on the bases. His location wasn't any better than what we saw in Milwaukee...still way too many fastballs left over the plate: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/location.php-pitchSel=122987&game=gid_2010_06_20_oakmlb_slnmlb_1&batterX=0&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=2.gif
If Lucroy would've been able to avoid swinging at anything that moved, he probably would've been able to walk home the tying run in that AB. I can understand a rookie just wanting to protect the plate at that point, though. You just can't play defense the way the Brewers did in the 8th inning and expect to win.
Yo deserved better than a no decision, but the right call was made to take him out at 105 pitches. I wish Bill would stop talking about a "quick hook" with him, because there's no reason to keep pushing him to 115-120 every start.
Very nice strike 'em out-throw 'em out there, with an awesome throw by Lucroy. He probably saved Yo another 10+ pitches that inning. And he follows it up with the first extra-base hit of his career. Way to go, Jon!
Man, I hate facing groundball pitchers. I guess that's what I get for thinking it'd be really hard to double up Gomez...tough break on where he hit that. Edit: Nice surprise, Alcides! A bit lucky sneaking that one through Cook's legs but I'll take it.
Looks like we should get used to this lineup, with Lucroy seemingly moving into the starting catcher role and Macha saying Gomez will hit no higher than 6th for the time being. Can't find much to not like about it, other than Casey struggling so badly behind Prince.
Brewers now 2-11 in their past 13 games in Colorado, going back to 2006. At least they managed to get the tying run to the plate, but it looked like Rickie was trying to tie it up himself.
No one else in this lineup has been able to hit Hammel's mistakes tonight, either. That's not to say a day off for Rickie every now and then would be a bad idea. He's on pace to shatter his career high in games played, and he's looked tired at times. With that said, he's posting a .911 OPS the past two weeks, so I'm having a hard time feeling too negative about him.
Are you thinking it might be time to call Gamel back up? Gamel's raking in Nashville, but he needs regular PT...I don't know how I'd feel about him getting called up to give McGehee 1 or 2 days off a week again. Counsell or Inglett would be able to do that just fine.
Gomez tried to bunt, ran outside of the running lane to avoid a tag from Helton, and initially no safe/out call was made. Gomez starts standing at first so everyone assumes he's safe, but then the umps get together and reverse the call. Macha comes out to argue and was apparently very animated and got tossed. I wouldn't know about the Macha part, because FSN's video feed has stunk all road trip and we're only able to listen to the FSN Wisconsin feed right now.
This scorekeeper's a joke. Parra should have 0 ER right now...both McGehee and Weeks should have made their plays. Both balls hit their gloves, and there was no reason for the balls to get through. Pretty much the definition of an error, no?
Prince looked pretty peeved that he wasn't able to get anything to hit to drive those runs in, but at least he knew well enough to lay off the bad pitches. Casey McGehee, on the other hand, has been nothing short of brutal this month (.161/.213/.304). That was the most frustrating AB of the inning.
