  1. Early in the season, I would say bad luck played a part in the road WOAAHS. At a certain point, though, it does become a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy -- whenever something starts to go wrong on the road (whether it's a wild pitch by Narveson, a missed scoring chance early, etc.), the "here we go again" thoughts creep into their heads. It doesn't make them "mental midgets" like some like to say. They're human. At home, it's much of the same. They've gotten quite a few bounces to go their way in Milwaukee, and now it's to a point where they're playing with a ton of confidence and they believe they can come back and beat anyone. That confidence has been lacking on the road, but if they can find a way to reel off a few wins in a row, perhaps that home mojo can carry over.
  2. Happy for J.J., happy that the O's get to keep a good player, but not so sure it's wise to guarantee Hardy three years when he hasn't proven he can stay healthy.
  3. The Derby is something fun to put on during a slow summer night, but there's no need for it to be 3+ hours. Trim the field from 8 to 6, take the top 3 for the Finals, and only allow 5 outs in the Finals and I bet you can trim it down by 30-45 minutes. I do like the "team captain" idea, though, and the players seemed to have fun with it. It's just disappointing that the atmosphere was so down in Arizona, and not just for the Derby but for the game itself. I can understand booing division rivals like the Dodgers and Giants during pre-game intros (and even the Yankees), but there were very few times where they would cheer for something. I honestly can't remember too much about the 2002 game in Milwaukee, but I do remember the fans at least enjoying the game and all the stars on the field, even if it meant cheering for Sammy Sosa for a night.
  4. Philaldephia's been linked to Bell a lot, and Cincinnati would make sense given Cordero's recent problems (although they'd be more likely to put Chapman in the 9th). Bell has said he's willing to move to a set-up role for the right team, which has led to some speculation about Boston.
  5. K-Rod is still pretty good and it sounds like the Brewers got him for peanuts, so it's hard to get too worked up about giving up players for a half season of relief pitching. Still, there are very few players I've disliked more than him. Here's to hoping he doesn't have many blowups (on or off the field) while he's passing through Milwaukee.
  6. Yeah this is the worst one I remember. The one in San Francisco was worse, with the winds off the bay knocking everything down. I remember Pittsburgh being pretty bland, too.
  7. For those who don't know, Powell is on Twitter at @Jim_Powell. A favorite from yesterday: "Jeter with 27 hits as a DH. Still has a ways to go to get to 3000 as a baseball player."
  8. Greinke's updated line with the scoring change: 6 IP 7 H 2 ER 2 BB 10 K. Yeah, that'll do.
  9. 4th 10 K game of Greinke's Brewers career, to go with 4 more 9 K games. Very encouraging last few innings from him tonight. I think the All-Star Break will be good for him.
  10. Nothing says "I'm better than you and I know it" than lobbing a 60-mph curve in there. Love that pitch.
  11. At least Yuni leads the league in sac flies. He's especially good at making outs when it counts.
  12. Good bounceback inning for Greinke, but the we'll see how he fares against the top of the order the next time around.
  13. Braun's MRI only showed inflammation, no structural damage. Still unsure if he'll play at all against Cincinnati, but if he doesn't, he's not playing in the All-Star Game.
  14. Olson followed that up with a tweet saying he's not singling anyone out, because "it's the whole group." McCalvy added after the game that Roenicke "was not happy."
  15. I was wondering the same thing. They mentioned on ESPN that even immediately after the injury, Pujols did much better on the "squeezing" tests than expected, so the 4-6 weeks could have been wrong from the start. He's apparently been pain-free for at least a week, which makes you wonder if it was ever really a fracture at all.
  16. It was nice to see some life in the 9th with two outs, but for most of the game they looked like a deflated team that lost a little more air every time something bad happened. I personally think what we saw the first couple months of the season is closer to the "real Brewers" than what we've seen the past couple weeks, but they're definitely hard to watch right now. Thankfully, it looks like the Reds are scuffling even worse right now. Hopefully Gallardo can give them a good outing tomorrow, and the Brewers can rattle off a few wins against the Reds heading into the break.
  17. Lucroy was the only other option. Tonight is one of those games where it'd be nice to have a modicum of power off the bench. They've had a couple chances to trim the lead down to a couple runs, but guys like Counsell are overmatched, even against the Aaron Heilmans of the world.
  18. RR has been pretty clear with his quotes the past few days that they're playing bad baseball. Maybe I've missed it, but I haven't seen the "it's okay" quotes from him lately.
  19. For what it's worth, Upton has hit 2 of the 8 longest HRs this year (and 3 of the Top 18), according to Hit Tracker Online. Prince's blast in Houston is still the longest of the year. In a batting practice competition, I'd probably care more about distance than quantity, plus it's always nice to give the hometown fans something to cheer for.
  20. McCalvy and Haudricourt tweet that Braun is a "no-go" tonight. Probably for the best. As bad as things have been lately, the offense hasn't been the problem and there's no sense in risking further injury if he's not 100%.
  21. I'm not going to worry about Prince or Rickie messing up their swings, since they have such natural power strokes to begin with. Prince hasn't shown any adverse effects the past two times he's done it, and Rickie's BP sessions are the stuff of legends.
  22. Chuck Freimund (among others) saying Braun is currently taking BP to test the calf. If he feels fine, he'll start instead of Wilson. Take that, Pujols.
